The resource of choice for pediatric residencies, clerkships, and exams, Nelson Essentials of Pediatrics continues to provide a focused overview of the core knowledge in pediatrics. Succinct, targeted coverage of normal childhood growth and development, as well as the diagnosis, management, and prevention of common pediatric diseases and disorders, make this an ideal medical reference book for students, pediatric residents, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants.
It was a great and sufficient maybe even efficient book. You can read all pages of the book in a two month course. One of the best parts of the book was boxes at end of each volume called "pearls of pediatrics"; they truly were pearls and we're useful in practice at least in wards.
I learned many more things during my pediatrics course.
Simple book for students ,for me ;i started firstly reading the chapter that concerns with ALLERGY :)) Atopic dermatitis which is chronic inflammatory relapsing condition,,caused by interplay cofactors such as immune abnormalities, genetic predisposition, disturbance in skin barrier function, infectious triggers, infectious causes,,pts with atopic dermatitis have hyperirritable skin, exagerrated inflammatory response to irritants & allergens,,in infancy the atopic dermatitis manifestation mostly involves the face, scalp, ckeeks, extensor surfaces of extremities,in older children & adolescents it mostly appears to be red areas ,itchy (sometimes)with changing in the texture (superficially)of the affected areas ,mostly appear in the antecubital fossae, polpiteal fossae, head&neck regarding the Rx:-it is only to reduce number of flares of the disease & to increase periods free of the disease, some researchers advise the pt with atopic dermatitis to maintain good hydration & short daily bath with warm water (not hot)is seen to be effective ,also avoidance of triggers such as extreme temperature, soaps, detergents,or any other allergens seem to provoke the condition ,corticosteroids are effective in acute episodes ,anti histamines ,,immunomodulators such as tacrolimus also approved to be imp.as second line therapy, especially for night-time flare up of the condition ,it is recommended her to use diphenhydramine, loratidine as oral doses but rarely oral Rx is indicated for allergy RX
I can't say enough good things about this textbook. Yes, it's long, but it is complete and I really believe that it is the reason why I killed my shelf exam. I definitely recommend it as your main source for the pediatrics clerkship, as well as an extra resource for general peds info for when you're on other services.
Not like other countries, sadly in Iran medical students are obligated to learn this textbook instead of more practical handbooks, that aside a great book with great intro and dedication.
A really solid, low-complexity medical text. Short chapters and lots of charts and tables; good for reference and fairly painless while the class was in session.
