About the author

Sujatha was the allonym of the Tamil author S. Rangarajan, Author of over 100 novels, 250 short stories, ten books on science, ten stage plays, and a slim volume of poems. He was one of the most popular authors in Tamil literature, and a regular contributor to topical columns in Tamil periodicals such as Ananda Vikatan, Kumudam and Kalki. He had a wide readership, and served for a brief period as the editor of Kumudam, and has also written screenplays and dialogues for several Tamil movies.

As an engineer, he supervised the design and production of the electronic voting machine (EVM) during his tenure at Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), a machine which is currently used in elections throughout India. As an author he inspired many authors, including Balakumaran, Madhan.

Woah! One hell of a read!

There are some books you sit and finish in one shot. And there are some that simply cannot be read in one go. This one is pretty different. This book is captivating enough to be read at one stretch. However, a part of you wants to take it slowly such that you enjoy and etch every bit of it in your memory!

I decided to read this book as slowly as I can so that I don't miss anything.

Below are some excerpts that I enjoyed-

1) In an attempt to translate Ogden Nash's words on marriage -
"To keep your marriage brimming
With love in the loving cup
Whenever you’re wrong, admit it;
Whenever you’re right, shut up."
Sujatha writes,

"இல்லற இன்பத்துக்கு
இது மட்டும் கத்துக்கொள்
தப்பென்றால் ஒத்துக்கொள்
சரியென்றால் பொத்திக்கொள்!""

2) He talks about Bill Bryson's 'A short history of nearly everything' and remarks "நம் ஒவ்வொருவருக்குள்ளும் கொஞ்சம் ஷேக்ஸ்பியர், கொஞ்சம் கௌதம புத்தர், கொஞ்சம் கம்பன் அணுக்கள் இருக்கின்றன என்றால் அது மிகையல்ல; பொய்யல்ல! என்ன, பாரதி இன்னும் 'ரீசைக்கிள்' ஆகியிருக்க மாட்டார். அணுக்களுக்கு அழிவில்லை என்றால் யாரும் இறப்பதில்லை. மீண்டும் பிறக்கிறோம். தாவரமாக. உயிரினமாக, மனிதராக பிரித்துக் கொடுக்கப் படுகிறோம்.""

3) "While reviewing 'In Search of Technology' by A. Sivakumar, he quotes, "ஓர் உண்மையான, ஆக்கப்பூர்வமான நிறுவனத்தில் விமர்சனங்கள் சரியான முறையில் எடுத்துக்கொள்ளப்படும், விமர்சித்தவர்களை அடுத்த விவாதங்களில் தவிர்ப்பதன் மூலம்!""

4)"எத்தனை பேர் இழுத்தும்
என்ன இன்னும் வரவில்லை
சேரிக்குள் தேர்!"

5) "காந்திகிரியை முதலில் தந்தவர் நம் வடிவேலு தான் என்று நினைக்கிறன். கிரி படத்தில் அவரது மறக்க முடியாத 'இவன் எவ்வளவு நல்லவன் டா ன்னு சொல்லிட்டாங்க' காமெடி காந்திகிரியின் வெளிப்பாடு!"

6)"புறாக்கள் வளர்க்கும் எதிர் வீட்டுக்காரர்
என்னிடமிருந்து பறிக்கிறார்
பூனை வளர்க்கும் சுதந்திரத்தை!"

7) What a wordplay! - "இல்லு என்ற சொல் நம் இல்லத்திலிருந்து அனுப்பியது. மனை நம்மிடம் அழைப்பிதழ்களில் மட்டும் மிஞ்சி உள்ளது. அதை கன்னடத்துக்கு அனுப்பிவிட்டு வீட்டைக் கட்டிக்கொண்டோம். அகமும் புறமும் மலையாளத்தில் இன்று அன்றாட வார்தைகளாகி, நம் உள்ளேயிருந்து வெளியே போய்விட்டன.""

8)"தமிழில் எனக்குப் பிடித்த ஆறு வார்த்தைக் கதை - "ஒரு ஊர்ல ஒரு நரியாம், அதோட சரியாம்!"

Apart from these, I also ended up getting pointers to a lotttt of books (that have rightfully entered my "Want to read" list ).
