153 books207 followersNarayan Sanyal (bn: নারায়ণ সান্যাল) was a well-known & versatile writer of modern Bengali literature. He received several awards for literature including Rabindra Puraskar for Aporupa Ajanta (Bangla: অপরূপা অজন্তা) in 1969, Bankim Puraskar for Rupmonjori (Bangla: রূপমঞ্জরী) in 2000, and Narasingha Dutta Award. Many of his books were filmed and he won the Best Film Story Writer Award for Shotyokam (Bangla: সত্যকাম) by Bengal Film Journalists.
Sanyal wrote numerous books that dealt with many topics, such as children, science, art and architecture, travels, psychiatry, technology, refugee problems, history, biographical pieces, encyclopedia of animals, social novel and Devadasi-related. He also wrote a series of detective fiction called the Kanta (Thorn) series, the framework of which was borrowed from the Perry Mason series of novels by Erle Stanley Gardner. Some of the stories were inspired from popular Agatha Christie novels like Mousetrap, ABC Murders, etc.
Interestingly, this talented author also preferred writing books on deep shadow of many world famous works. One of the most popular Sci-Fictions Nakshatraloker Debatatma (Bangla: নক্ষত্রলোকের দেবাত্মা) is based on the transformation of human race from primitive creature to civilized intelligent species controlling the whole earth. Then it deals with Jupiter exploration and a super intelligent Computer HAL. The three parted book is a clear shadow of 2001: A Space Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke. In his book, NS renamed HAL as 'Jantra-Na.' In his mother tongue Bangla, it means 'Not a Machine'.
His most popular work is Biswasghatak (Bangla: বিশ্বাসঘাতক) written about the Manhattan project that developed the first US Atom Bomb. This book is based on the shadow of Brighter than a Thousand Suns: A Personal History of the Atomic Scientists (1970), by Austrian Robert Jungk. Not a shadow, but almost translation in some parts. Few of the illustrations in this book have been taken from few Russian school level books.
Another book Timi Timingil (Bangla: তিমি তিমিঙ্গিল) is on Whales. This stands on an article published in Readers Digest. But while NS accepted this for Timi Timingil, he never mentioned or thanked authors of 2001 or Brighter.
Most of the "Kanta" series stories were copied or heavily inspired from Perry Mason novels. For example, "Ristedar-er Kanta" was copied from The case of the beautiful beggar, "Abhipurbak Ni-Dhatu Au-er Kanta" was inspired from The case of the restless redhead. Some of the stories were inspired from Agatha Christie stories. For example, "Dress Rehearsal-er Kanta" was inspired from Three Act Tragedy. NS acknowledged his inspirations in his first few "Kanta" series books, but forgot to do so for the latter ones.
Thousands of NS fans feel sorry of this as a man of his talent could have developed something even better instead of just 'Copying' and retouching others works while he had indeed produced some excellent works himself.
But it is undoubtedly accepted by all that NS was one of the finest authors in Bengali and he was a class apart from the flock of contemporary Bengali writers those who too dependent on sentiment and emotional overdose in their writings and too dependent on monopolist Bengali media/publication groups in commercial front.

This exceptional piece of literature by Narayan Sanyal brings together science and romance inside a single cover. In his story, Sanyal depicts the story of Priyadarshi and Shovona, both of them have a murky past. Priyadarshi is a trauma survivor. The story starts when Priyadarshi leaves Karunamayi Ashram, the lunatic asylum which was his abode for as long as he can remember. While going from Ranchi to Delhi, he meets Baisakhi, a widow and flirts with her. However, on reaching Delhi, he gets busy with his painting, and meets Divecha, a leading businessman and film-producer. On his invitation, he reaches Mumbai, and discovers that Baisakhi is a film- heroine, and her name is Shovona. He feels betrayed, and when he learns that Divecha actually wants him to be the hero of his film, he declines. Meanwhile, Priyadarshi and Shovona comes closer, and after a day spend together, they fall in love with each other. That night, they elope after Priyadarshi learns that her father had hit her. They reach Ranchi, and Dr. Sadarangani, the head of the lunatic asylum, prepares for their wedding. However, Shovona suddenly learns that Priyadarshi and she are siblings, he went away with their mother when she was just a child. Her world shatters, and though Dr. Sadarangani thries to soothe her with his psychiatric theories, Shovona is inconsolable. Finally, Dr. Sadarangani comes up with an idea and declares that Shovona is suffering from a sadness disorder. He makes her go with Priyadarshi to Nasik, where Priyadarshi paints frescoes in a cinema hall. Meanwhile, Dr. Sadarangani meets Shovona's father, Shah Jahan, and learns that Priyadarshi's mother was indeed his lover and his half-cousin. However, she had betrayed him and eloped with her Hindi teacher. Finally, Shovona understands that she and her lover are not siblings, and the book ends with both of them agreeing to be the hero and heroine of the movie "Tajer Swapno".
Sanyal's narrative is highly exceptional. Written in pure and simple Bengali, he captures the interest of his readers at the first line itself. If you are an ethnic bengali who can read the language fluently, I personally recommend this book to you.

এই কাহিনী প্রিয়দর্শী এবং বৈশাখীর অথবা প্রিয়দর্শী ও শ্রবণার। গল্পের শুরু করুণাময়ী স্যাঙচুয়ারীতে। এখানকার ডাক্তার ডঃ সদারঙ্গনী। বিভিন্ন জায়গার মানুষ, হ্যাঁ, রোগী নয় তারা , মানুষ আসে এখানে জীবনের মূল স্রোতে নতুন করে ফিরে যাওয়ার পথ খুঁজে পেতে। প্রিয়দর্শীও সেই সব মানুষদের একজন। যখন সে নিজের পথ খুঁজে পায়, সে রওনা হয় রাঁচি থেকে দিল্লি। ট্রেনে আলাপ হয় বৈশাখীর সঙ্গে।
যখন তাদের দিক বদল হল পথেই, তখন প্রিয়দর্শীর জীবনের দ্বিতীয় অধ্যায় শুরু হল। এবার সে দেখা পেল শ্রবণার, বোম্বাইয়ের আলো ঝলমল সিনেমার জগতে।আদতে সেই জায়গার পঙ্কিল, কদর্য রূপ প্রতিপদে প্রত্যক্ষ করল সে। শাহাজাহান এখানে একটি দারুণ চরিত্র। এই চরিত্রটির বুনন যেভাবে করা হয়েছে, তাতে সে গল্পের পুরো মাত্রা পরিবর্তন করার ক্ষমতা রাখে, কিছু ক্ষেত্রে করেও।
এরপর প্রিয়দর্শী ও শ্রবণার প্রেম ও রাঁচিতে পালিয়ে যাওয়া। তারপরেই জীবনের অদ্ভুত ধাক্কায় বৈশাখীর দ্বিরাগমন।
কাহিনীর শুরুতে মনে হয়েছিল থ্রিলার পড়ছি। দারুণ সূচনা। জটিল ও গতিশীল। পরবর্তীতে এই গল্প প্রেমের। অনেক রহস্যের উপাদান থাকলেও শেষ পর্যন্ত কাহিনীটি অতিনাটকীয় রূপ নিয়েছে। অনেক প্রশ্নের উত্তর অধরা থেকে গেছে গল্পটিকে একটি সুখকর ও সহজ শেষ দিতে চাওয়ার আগ্রহে।
বিষয় বৈচিত্র্যের বৈশিষ্ট্যের কারণে নারায়ণ সান্যাল অত্যন্ত প্রিয় একজন লেখক। ওঁনার গবেষণাধর্মী ঐতিহাসিক লেখা, স্থাপত্যশৈলী নিয়ে লেখা, জীবনীভিত্তিক অথবা বিজ্ঞান বিষয়ক ও সামাজিক লেখা আমাকে মুগ্ধ করেছে। এই লেখাটির থেকেও অনেক আশা ছিল, যা পূর্ণ হল না। এই লেখাতে রহস্যের সৃষ্টি অসাধারণ, কিন্তু রহস্যের উন্মোচন দুর্বল। তবে একটি কথা আছে "Truth is stranger than fiction" । তাই বাস্তবে অনেক কিছুই ঘটতে পারে যা কল্পনাতীত। অনেক প্রশ্নেরই উত্তর পাওয়া যায় না জীবনে। উপন্যাসের ক্ষেত্রেও এমন হতেই পারে!

১৭ বছর বয়সে মানসিক-বিকারগ্রস্ত প্রিয়দর্শী এসেছিলো করুণাময়ী আশ্রমে। ডাক্তার সদারঙ্গনির দেখাশোনায়, প্রচেষ্টায় ৮ বছরের মধ্যে সে সুস্থ হয়ে ওঠে। রাঁচি থেকে দিল্লি পারি দেয় কাজের সূত্রে। ট্রেনে আলাপ হয় বৈশাখীর সাথে। সহযাত্রীর আবদারে প্রিয়দর্শী শোনায় এক গল্প। এ কি তার লেখা গল্প, না জীবনের গল্প। Paramnesia তে ভুগেছিলো প্রিয়দর্শী, যেখানে অনেক সময় গল্পের চরিত্রের সাথে নিজেকে মিলিয়ে ফেলে।
দিল্লি গিয়ে কাজের সূত্রে সে চলে বোম্বাই। সেখানে আবার দেখা পায় বৈশাখীর, কিন্তু অন্য নাম, পরিচয়। ভ্রান্ত হয়ে পরে প্রিয়দর্শী। এরপরে গল্প প্রবাহে সামাজিক রীতি, বাধা-বিপত্তির ঘটনার সম্মুখীন হতে হয় প্রিয়দর্শী, শ্রবণাদের। গল্পের পার্শ্বচরিত্রে শাহ্জাহান, মুমতাজের হঠকারী, ছলনাআশ্রিত প্রেমের ট্রাজিক পরিণতি।
গল্পের শেষে চমক, যেটা নারায়ণ বাবুর লেখাতে সচরাচর পাওয়া যায়। একবার পড়ার জন্য ভালো।
