So Simple Crochet: A Fabulous Collection of 24 Fashionable and Fun Designs by Melody Griffiths
There is a character in one of P. G. Wodehouse’s books who is on a strict diet and in reaction reads cookbooks as a substitute for eating rich foods. I resemble that character in that I cannot possibly crochet all the interesting patterns I find and instead find enjoyment reading crochet how-to books for fun. Therefore an immediate advisory: if there is a problem with any of the patterns I did not find it. I did, however, have a pleasant time reading this book. “So Simple Crochet” has 24 projects plus a decent “Basic Information” section in the front of the book. This gives an overview of yarns and crochet hooks along with pictorials of various stitches. I have only one criticism of this section: the “reading stitch diagrams” paragraph. Yes I said paragraph. Learning to read stitch diagrams is one of those things I want to do so that language will not be a barrier, I could even attempt a Japanese pattern. I will never learn how to use stitch diagrams from this book however. The paragraph shows the symbol for each stitch. Period. The symbols are not the tricky part. The tricky part is figuring out where a stitch diagram begins and what constitutes a row. At least that’s the tricky part for me. The paragraph does not go into that kind of detail.
On to the patterns! There are some nice looking sweaters, ponchos, tops, scarves and hats. I go for quicker projects so I won’t be making any of the sweaters, although I may break that rule for the “Lacy Motifs Long Cardigan.” It’s gorgeous. I’ll most likely make the Chenille Cowl. It’s pretty and will work up fast.
The patterns in this book are a combination of items to keep you warm and pieces to wear to a party. There are a few long cardigan patterns that have fantastic designs. They also look like they would take a fair amount of time and so I’ll be passing on those at this time. But if you are looking for unique and elegant, I hesitate to call them sweaters, perhaps “lacy sweaters”, this book has some intriguing patterns.
Was given this book as a birthday present. Have made the Ruffled Mohair Wrap and it turned out beautifully. However, I am totally stumped on the sleeve for the Zip-Up Jacket. The instructions make no sense to me and I have been crocheting for decades. It's really frustrating as I have finished the body but don't know how to do the sleeves. I emailed the US publisher and got not reply. Now I have tried the UK publisher and hopefully will get better results.
Some of the patterns quite cute. I looked at the zip up jacket, thinking since it was a beginner pattern (I do more medium to advance projects now), I figure it would be easy to whip up and do on down time. The body looks simple enough to. But I tried making the sleeves and I ended up giving up. I notice someone else reviewing this pattern also had issues with it. Hopefully can figure it out with time
