About the author

Edmund Spenser (c. 1552 - 1599) was an important English poet and Poet Laureate best known for The Faerie Queene, an epic poem celebrating, through fantastical allegory, the Tudor dynasty and Elizabeth I.

Though he is recognized as one of the premier craftsmen of Modern English verse in its infancy, Spenser is also a controversial figure due to his zeal for the destruction of Irish culture and colonisation of Ireland.

So far I've liked this book. I have been reading this via ebook and the original copy I downloaded only had the first book. I have found another ebook copy with books 1-3, so I will be reading 2-3 shortly.

Eu entendi toda a crítica que foi feita a esse livro depois, e porque coisas da mesma época tipo Shakespeare são consideradas tão boas.

Quis ler esse livro porque o John Milton, que escreveu Paradise Lost, considerava o Edmund Spenser seu mentor que ele tinha superado. Ele criticava a obra dele por ser muito alegórica e moralista, deixando pouco espaço para a criação do autor. De fato, o livro na maior parte parece uma grande lição de moral, em que são narradas literalmente batalhas entre personagens como a Prudência contra os Irmãos Pecadores. É um pouco ridículo.

Eu entendo também porque esse livro foi importante, ele se propõe a ser uma Eneida inglesa e descreve muito do que os ingleses da época consideravam ser suas origens.

Algumas partes são bem escritas, e tem um bom ritmo que te engaja. Principalmente a história de São Jorge contra o dragão (ou seja, a parte que o Spenser não inventou) mostra a habilidade do autor com poesia épica.

Mas no resto, nada funciona: as aventuras todas parecem não levar a lugar nenhum, os personagens são puras alegorias de uma virtude e tudo se torna muito previsível e repetitivo. A construção de narrativa segue uma ordem aparentemente aleatória, pulando de personagem para personagem exatamente nos momentos em que algo interessante começava a acontecer.

Comparar isso com Milton e Shakespeare me faz perceber como somos felizes que não é o Spenser que lemos nas escolas.

Although the language of this can be a bit tricky to decipher at times it is definitely worth a read. I have never read this poem before but had seen it referenced in many other books and is definitely well deserved as a truly beautiful epic poem.

I studied and wrote about this book for my dissertation. First of all I hated it but really grew to love the imagery and the layers upon layers symbolism. It is the English epic poem and makes me sad that not many people know about it. Beautiful work.

Though the language was a bit difficult (thanks Sparknotes for helping out!) the plot was amazing. Good tale. :)Haven't read books 4-6 though. Need to do that :)
