A permanent injury in the line of duty effectively ended Ian Ryker’s career as a Shadow Walker for the Council of Races. Being posted to a safe house in Washington, D.C. was one step short of forced retirement–until the day Marley Weiss, a local human woman, witnessed something she should never have seen. According to Mirus law, that glimpse of their world makes her life forfeit. Once, Ian might have followed orders to take her out. But not this time.

Very entertaining. If you like fantasy/romance this is a great read. Very interesting characters and a little twist on the typical fantasy "types". Looking forward to the next novel. Most impressive copy editing--congratulations to this indie writer. Not everyone is so careful. If the series keeps going as well as it is, I will likely upgrade to 5 stars. 4 stars is, "I really liked it and would be happy to read it again." 5 stars is, "This book is going into my library to read over and over again."

I haven't yet read anything by Kait Nolan that I don't like. This was no different. I love her Mirus series. I liked Marley and how tough she had to be. I loved Ian and how protective he was from the beginning even when he knew what trouble it would bring him.

And the interaction between Ian and Matthias. And pretty much everything else about the story. Seriously enjoyed this one.

Readers of the Mirus series won't be disappointed. This latest episode features the same sparks of action, originality, and vivid world building that make the series a stand-out in the world of paranormal romance. The romantic suspense of a good chase story, set in a world of monsters and magic.

I thoroughly enjoyed Ian and Marley’s story. Not that I wouldn’t love to hear more about their futures, but I felt sated, optimistic for their futures

This is a quick little read.

Thoughts: Welp, I loved the main characters. Neither is a pushover. And btw, can I just say how much LIKE a lady who calls a guy out on his sexist crap? Not knowing any better isn't an excuse, you can be schooled. And boy howdy does Marley do some schooling.

The plot was perfectly paced (as usual) up until about the 70% mark and then it started to lose me somewhat. I can't name what it was, but I kinda felt all the tension leave it. Honestly, the last 25% was more like a long epilogue to me. Like, the stuff you still really WANT to read, but you're kinda past the dangerous part. Which is kinda funny, because there was plenty of action and danger after the 70% mark. So maybe it's just because I know Nolan's style so well now that I felt like my couple was in good hands. *shrug*

Regardless, this was a good read. The storyline isn't a new one and the world is very PNR, but somehow Nolan always manages to inject fresh characters, dialogue, and events into her stories. It is something I very much appreciate about her as an author.

So yeah, the first 70% gets a five star, the last bit gets a 3 and I just sort of averaged them out to a 4.5. If you like PNR and awesome characters, this is the book for you!

If Paranormalcy and Escape to Witch Mountain got busy and had a child...and the child grew up to adulthood and was all sexy...and profane...and kickbutt...and awesome--it would be Riven. I love Kait Nolan's writing and this is no exception. The world she created is fascinating and brilliant and Ian is the perfect conflicted hero.

My favorite line:

All those times she'd wished he were there to walk with her, he actually had been—just out of sight. "I can't decide if that's sweet or creepy."

(Hint: It's sweet...and, okay, a bit creepy...in a COOL way.) Ian has some awesome powers.

Oh, I also like this bit of dialogue:

"First sign of anything off and we're out of there. Okay? You sense anything, you say the safe word."

"Which is?"

"Anything you want it to be. Something that won't naturally come up in context."

"Fudge monkeys."

Ian blinked at her, lips twitching. "Well that certainly fits the bill."

This goes on my keeper shelf and Nolan has just shifted to auto-buy. Oh, the one star fell off because of the amount of F words. I have some conservative friends who I can't recommend it to...openly...so I'll just hope they read this review.

Immediately engrossing, RIVEN offers an exciting story and empathetic characters. Kait Nolan deftly introduces the paranormal into a gritty, contemporary urban fantasy, as Marley, a young woman who was abandoned by her father, acquires a protector -- Ian, a shadow walker who no longer believes he is capable of human emotion.

Readers are in for plot twists that keep tension high, but the story line does not sacrifice the developing relationship between Marley and Ian. While my review is of an advance review copy, I enjoyed reading this intriguing, appealing, and engaging story. I'm ready for Book 2!

2.5 stars. Enjoyable enough but nothing particularly note-worthy.
