I was fortunate enough to receive an advance copy of "Witches, Stitches and Bitches edited by Shannon Page. I found myself unable to put it down. I loved the fresh re-visioning on the mythic witch, the obstinate bitch and the way the Witch and the Bitch sometimes collaborate with stitchery. These deftly woven short stories of varying lengths seamlessly relate to one another. All of the stories are written by edgy and innovative writers, mostly women but with some men as well. The unconventional ...more

I reached out to author Stephanie Bissette-Roark in the beginning of September after reading a synopsis of her writing on Facebook. I found out that her introductory snippet was actually a part of a larger book, "Witches, Stitches and Bitches" and anthology produced by up and coming publishing company by the name of Evil Girlfriend Media.

I discovered EGM when utilizing facebook's new "stalker mode" and having it pop up on my feed from an author friend. I went to their page and scoped them out,

(AUTHOR’S NOTE: In the interests of disclosure, I’ll tell you now that I am friends with Katie Cord, founder and CEO of Evil Girlfriend Media, and am acquainted with several of the authors featured in WSB. At least, I was when I started writing this review. Given my penchant for brutal honesty in reviews, we’ll see how many are left after it’s posted.)

Witches, Stitches, & Bitches (hereafter WSB) is an anthology of short stories, with each story featuring, in some interpretation, a witch,

Maybe it was the first story being a rape/abuse story without the abuser even getting the tiniest bit of comeuppance, but I did not enjoy this collection at all. The last story with the graphic and unapologetic killing of a dog did not help, and if this had been the first of these collections I had read, I would not have bothered with the others.

Technically 3.5 stars, but worthy of rounding up.

Witches, Bitches & Stitches an anthology of stories by a talented group of authors. Three little words and what do they all have in common? Women...females...girls. "Witches", whether they are old with the crooked nose with the wart on the end or newly discovering the power they may possess are all female. "Stitches", are used to make something new, beautiful and even to fix things that are broken. Then we have the word "bitch" a word that

I can't remember the last time I read a themed anthology and didn't skip over at least one of the stories. Well, this anthology succeeded in just that.

I picked this up because it featured a story by Gabrielle Harbowy, who is a phenomenal genre fiction editor, and so I was interested in seeing some of her own original fiction. I was happy to find both her story and the others were of amazing quality, a good sign for new small publisher, Evil Girlfriend Media. Looking forward to their other Three

I'm guessing the authors were told that if they write a short story with at least one witch, at least one stitch, and at least one bitch, it might be included in this collection. Sure, it sounds a bit contrived, but it resulted in a wonderful collection. After all, there's a lot greater variety to types of witches than, say, vampires or werewolves. (And is there really any significant range among zombies? Although, I'll still probably read Roms, Bombs & Zoms — another book in this same ...more

Okay, I know that I have a story in this anthology too, but I just had to leave a review for the other authors. I found Stephanie Bissette-Roark's addition, "Spare Parts" absolutely stunning! The best Raggedy Ann style story I've ever read. Eva Langston's, "The Three Gateways" gave me chills! Kodiak Julian's, "Not Even if I Wanted To" gave me another take on houses made of candy, while Camille Griep's "For Want of a Unicorn" made me wish I'd never asked for a unicorn in my youth!

These are all
