Another of the free books from Redgate https://www.red-gate.com/hub/books/ This is a shorter book, but it split into two sections. The first is a simple explanation of what statistics are and how they are used within SQL Server. The second part is troubleshooting common problems when statistics are out of date. If you work with SQL Server Performance Tuning, take a few hours to sit down with this book.

This is just a short free ebook on SQL Server statistics. If you need to read up on the subject, this is a great overview.
