I skimmed reviews of this book on Amazon and saw all 5 stars. I thought no way can a book be this good. I was so wrong. Stephen Doster takes you into a small southern town in Georgia called Sprite. It starts with a chemical engineer, Dudley, moving to this small town as a contractor for a paper mill. He had lost his wife and needed to get away from where he lived. Stepping into this town there are places he will go and feel like he stepped back in time to before the civil war. I don't want to gi ...more

I won this book from the goodreads giveaway. While I always look forward to reading any and all books that I win, this one was not as good as I had hoped.
It was like the Prodigal Son meets Fried Green Tomatoes without the really good story. While I thought most of the characters were real and fleshed out, the tale they had to tell was a bit thin. The author, while trying to get his point across, came across too preachy for my taste. I understand what he was trying to do, but it just kept on an

I won this book on a goodreads giveaway and I thank you very much for that is was a great surprise. The book was a fun read to end 2013 with. It takes place in a small town with a paper mill having a lot of problems with environmental standards which I myself live in a small town with a paper mill that was closed down for these very same reasons. It was a fun trip with Dudley, Charlie and Urquhart as they went through all their ups and down to prevail in the end.

This took me back to my roots. Having grown-up in Middle Georgia, I kept saying to myself, "Hey! I know this guy!" I could vividly picture in my mind what everything looked like. Doster did a remarkable job. I loved the characters and wanted more as I read the last line.

I was born in England to a mother who served as a WAFF on eight RAF fighter stations during World War II and a father who served as a navigator in the Pacific during that war on the USS Taylor, a Fletcher class destroyer that earned nine battle stars. Much to my good fortune, our family relocated first to Alabama, then Georgia, where I grew up on a small barrier island off the Georgia coast. St. S ...more
