180618: most short story or essay collections are of varying qualities. i will not say all of these stories are excellent- but none are less than very good satire, social, political, absurdities, whether expressed in the judicial cases brought in the first half or the short stories often ending in murder of various characters in the second half. the author has a sharp ear for bureaucratese, for inherent comic tone, for telling the stories each in the right way, varying from deadpan to magical re ...more

Divided into two sections. The first section telling the about court room trials in post revolution Communist Ethiopia and the second section telling stories outside the court. An insiders account of the grim realities in a land where the people who are Black don't consider themselves to be as black as the others and suffer from prejudices and an oppressive regime without having any power to revolt against it.

Hama Tuma is a master of the Danteseque use of contrapasso. While the satire blisters with the brutal absurdity of a insane dictatorship,each story is underlined by the implausible contradictions of reality. Meaning, death is swift when it arrives, but the torture and suffering, before death, are agonizing mutilations and amputations. Torture is an expected state of living, so pain becomes culture.
