TAKES A RISK AND WINS

Rival Gates’ QUEST FOR THE RED SAPPHIRE reminds me in many ways of Sophia Coppola’s MARIE ANTOINETTE and Brian Helgeland’s A KNIGHT’S TALE. Bringing to light a fantastic world with plenty of back story, descriptions are detailed and characters are busy. QUEST is a journey tale centering on young Linvin Grithinshield, a soldier mercantilist with a social conscience. A veteran of the Goblin Wars, Valia’s youngest general is called home to Sartan where he must assume control of

"Quest for the Red Sapphire" is an engaging adventure that instantly pulls the reader into a unique world alive with its struggles, wars, and varied social strata. It is filled with characters such as elves, gnomes, goblins, and even dragons, and magical objects such a sword that can read thoughts and communicate with its owner. The story is fascinating, and the characters feel real and familiar.

The first part of the book centers around the ancient war between the humans and goblins, whom the hu

High fantasy, political intrigue, unique characters and a lush world, Quest for the Red Sapphire has everything you could want in a fantasy novel. What sets this novel out is the attention to detail on every page. Whether it's traveling with the characters, rearranging the inner workings of a business, or simply stopping in a tent for the night, the author has filled this story with so much detail you can't help but get sucked in. It's no trouble at all to imagine this world as a real place and ...more

This well-written novel handles the omniscient point of view with such a lightness of touch that I was hardly aware of reading. The wonderful descriptions in this epic fantasy novel drew me into a new world of elves, humans, goblins and dragons. I was left with the impression of watching a movie to follow different characters through scenes rather than see the events unfolding through the eyes of one character.

When the strong main character is pulled away from his leadership role to attend to f

This is a beautifully written book, which is also reasonably priced, despite the amount of effort it took both in developing the characters and getting the book published. Rival Gate's book, Quest for the Red Sapphire (Volume 1) has everything you could imagine in a fictional work, mind games, banquets, treachery, battles, etc. The former general, Grithinshield, had to be very courageous in the face of dangers and threats to his life. The loss of his parents was a very painful experience. Luckly ...more

The story was mind-gripping for sure. It's action-packed and full of surprises that keeps the readers on edge. As most fantasy story, it includes a long journey for the main characters that ensure hardships and danger along the way. When one challenge was conquered, another came up and it always seems so bleak for the characters as the story goes on. Nevertheless, Gates has woven a story that makes me want to read on until the end to find out the outcome of this fast-paced, thrilling adventure. ...more

Easy to read, great plot, old friends.

Even if you don't recognize the characters, you'll get a kick out of getting to know them. The forthright Linvin and his wily uncle, Anvar, match wits against an evil ruler and his not-so-tame wizard. But things never go to plan as you'll find out when the plot unfolds. The easy read novel will sweep you away on a fantasy adventure.

Quest for the Red Sapphire is one of those books that once you start you don't want to quit. Several times I found myself up past 1:00 am reading knowing full well I had to work in the morning early and I had to force myself to put Quest for the Red Sapphire down. The charterer development is outstanding. The plot keeps you guessing twist after twist. This is one I will keep on my bookshelf.

When I first read the synopsis for Quest for the Red Sapphire I had a pretty clear picture on what was going to happen in the book. You would have the usual fantasy genre characters ranging from elves, goblins and humans with maybe some other popular mythical creatures. There would be a quest, obviously, some vengeance with some fighting scenes and of course there was going to be some character development with the hero. But even though I had a good idea for the plotline I decided to give this b ...more

I had the pleasure of hosting and interview with the author of this book. The interview was set before I read the book so I would get a taste of Mr. Gate's inspiration and passion towards writing this book!

Q. So goblins, elves, and dragons! Can you tell us a little bit about why you decided to write a book in the genre of fantasy? Have you always had a love for fantasy books (like me ;))?
I can't remember the exact age but I was very young when my mother gave me a copy of "The Lion, The Witch an

If your looking for a fantasy, Lord of the Rings-ish book, then look no further. Quest for the Red Sapphire takes place in a world where goblins, elves, and humans interact in an old society, but not without complications.

Linvin, the main character, is rushed home after his elvish mother writes of his father’s disappearance. He takes up his father’s rich trading company, and happily continues the business until his uncle, Anvar, informs him of the quest his father set up for him before his untim

I really actually enjoyed this book… the plot was an exciting one… the world that was created was well built and both realistic and magical at the same time… the reader is teased by a brief encounter of a man buying a golden key that will bring his son home… and suddenly we’re there with his son, Linvin, who is revealed to be this great general… a young man who has risen high in the ranks due to his unparalleled display as a warrior but also his intelligence that helps win a war against the gobl ...more

However, the nefarious Lord Mandrean carries out a search to fully empower the Red Sapphire’s parallel Blue Sapphire, with the intentions of using its power to destroy Linvin. *I received a copy of this book in exchange for a fair review. The author has never tried to sway me into giving a positive one.

Overall, I enjoyed most of the book and will definitely be reading the sequel.

Plot:
It took almost half the book for the plot to become apparent, especially to the main character. It was a bit inconceivable that a man with no business experience could save his family’s business so quickly, as some reviewers have noted. However, most of the problems were related to the bi

Quest for the Red Sapphire is a High Fantasy novel that fans of Lord of the Rings will love. With the help of a small band, Linvin starts out on a quest to find the mythical Red Sapphire in the hope that they can prevent it from being used for nefarious purposes.

On such a quest there surely must be shenanigans barring the way to the goal. And there were many, many bumps along the way, which just made this book more exciting!

I loved the story, but wasn’t crazy about the writing style. I call this

Mandrean Revenge Although I haven’t read the first 2 books in the Sapphire Chronicles, Mandrean Revenge was not difficult to pick up. I found it very easy to pick up the thread of the story and understand the characters, specifically Linvin.
This book is filled with excitement, suspense and intrigue from the first page, and is well enough written for me to be able to imagine the scenery and the feelings of the characters. I loved the relationship between the Necromancer and Linvin’s  uncle especi

I received a copy of this book in exchange for a review.

I do not select high fantasy books as a norm because they tend to challenge me too much because the worlds and plot are complicated. However, Gates created both a world and a plotline that was very easy to read and enjoy.

Linvin, a half-elf, returns after fighting in a war and quickly realizes the world he thought he left behind, is not what it seemed to be. He soon sets off with his uncle and two cousins to find the Red Sapphire. It is not
