Apparently my ability to see a plot line has improved since I was in my teens. The last time I read this I was in my late teens...it was interesting to re-read it and see how I've grown as a reader. While I genuinely liked the story arcs surrounding Luis, Running Fox, and how Tibbie related to them, I never got to the point where I genuinely liked the heroine (Valora.) I could see who the designated "bad guy" was a mile away. I also liked the inclusion of the Miwok culture and the mysticism that went with that, but I won't be saving this book like I did in my teens.
The villain is immediately and glaringly obvious, so every time our TSTL heroine swoons over him I felt like shaking her. Plus, she has a bad case of "You Should Have Read My Mind." Tibbie was pretty awesome, though.
Valora Rolland returns to her family's ancestral manor and confronts the dark secrets of the past. She must face Luis Redhawk, a man with ancient and modern powers who has both drawn her and terrified her. As Valora delves into the mysteries of the Black Mountain and the evil that has been awakened, she discovers the connection between Luis and the dark force that threatens to unleash its power once more on Mount Sangre.
I enjoyed the balanced mix of romance and intrigue in this book. While it delivered on the romance aspect, I wish there had been more depth and exploration of the historical elements. However, one downside was the lack of subtlety in identifying the villain, which made it frustrating to see the heroine interacting with him despite the obvious warning signs.
I used to read alot more Romance then I do now...it's not that I'm no longer a romantic, it's just the books for the most part don't do much for me anymore. This book is one I enjoyed in my early 20's, had the right amount of romance and intrigue...well it could have used more history, story is just a bit flat in that area.
