Real Science-4-Kids Chemistry, Level I, written at a 4th and 5th grade reading level, introduces children to college-level chemistry concepts such as the atom and periodic table, molecular bonding and chemical reactions. acid-base reactions, mixtures and separating mixtures, and large molecules such as carbohydrates, polymers and enzymes, and includes a glossary/index.
I loved Ellen McHenry's Elements, so I thought this one couldn't quite live up to that. But then I realized that the Elements were just that, and in-depth look at the periodic table, and for an overview of chemistry, we'd have to also do McHenry's carbon chemistry curriculum, which I have and perused, but it's much longer than the Elements and even tougher and more in-depth. So when I realized that, I believe that RS4K's curriculum is a nice, albeit a bit too short, overview to chemistry for grades 5-7. I thought it got a bit tough in the polymer section, but that's fine for junior high. And I do wish she'd included some more things---for example, she didn't talk about solids, liquids, and gases, or much about solvents, etc., though she hinted at parts of those. I'm really happy with it though, and like it better than World of Science, which is our other option.
I thought this book was fantastic. It made it very easy to understand advanced concepts. The illustrations were bright and really added to the comprehension. Overall I'm very pleased with this series...and my kids love them. We'll continue using them.
My one complaint is that I wish the books were longer. But it does allow us more time for hands-on stuff and we're able to study other subjects since we go through these so quickly.
