This book assesses the causes and consequences of the impact on the recent Middle East war. The authors describe the popular basis of Hezbollah in Lebanon among the Shiites, but also its relation to the country's other religious communities and political forces. They analyze the regional roles of Syria, Iran, and Hamas as well as the politics of the United States and Europe. The authors dissect the strategic and political background behind recent actions taken by Israel; the impact of Israel's incursion into Lebanon and effects on Lebanon's population -- and the consequences of the war on Israel polity and society.

Coming in I figured I’d have to manage my expectations since the only version of Achcar I had known was the Arab Spring post Arab Spring one engaged in a lot of left sectarian shenanigans and “neither Washington nor Moscow (nor Tehran nor Damascus etc etc)” silliness. Thankfully most of that is kept out of here and what’s left is a brief overview of the events of 2006 and their context. I am a Yank by birth so it was a little easy for me to get lost in the complicated web of parliamentary politics and their associated blocs and coalitions but he does as good a job as anyone can, in the short amount of time he’s given himself, to guide some of his, shall we say, slower readers (me) through it all.
A brief summary of the history and background of Israel's 2006 war against Lebanon. I would have liked to see the authors flesh out some more of their points and do a more thorough job of arguing their case as they seemed to write on the assumption that every reader would agree almost automatically on all their interpetations.
