What do you think?

Running Through Beijing
Chinese literature published in the United States has tended to focus on politics — think the Cultural Revolution and dissidents — but there's a whole other world of writing out there. It's punk, dealing with the harsh realities lived by the millions of city-dwellers struggling to get by in the grey economy. Dunhuahg, recently out of prison for selling fake IDs, has just enough money for a couple of meals. He also has no place to stay and no prospects for earning more yuan. When he happens to meet a pretty woman selling pirated DVDs, he falls into both an unexpected romance and a new business venture. But when her on-and-off boyfriend steps back into the picture, Dunhuahg is forced to make some tough decisions. Running Through Beijing explores an underworld of constant thievery, hardcore porn, cops (both real and impostors), prison bribery, rampant drinking, and the smothering, bone-dry dust storms that blanket one of the world's largest cities. Like a literary Run Lola Run, it follows a hustling hero rushing at breakneck speed to stay just one step ahead. Full of well-drawn, authentic characters, Running Through Beijing is a masterful performance from a fresh Chinese voice.

After reading short stories in the collection “Beijing Sprawl” (北京西郊故事集) by Xu Zechen I wanted to stay mentally in Beijing and I reached for his novel “Running through Beijing” (跑步穿过中关村).
The characters, just like the author, come from Jiangsu province, and try their luck in Beijing, the city of (broken) dreams. “Running through Beijing” (in the original title there is the name of Chinese ‘Silicon Valley’ Zhongguancun - the tech hub district of Beijing - as this is where the characters hang out) begins with Dunhuang, the narrator and the main protagonist, leaving prison. Yellow dust covers everything and from the first pages Xu evokes the atmosphere of Beijing really well. Dunhuang is penniless and needs to find a job, a place to stay and someone to connect with. He has a lot in common with Muyu, the narrator of the interconnected stories in “Beijing Sprawl”. Dunhuang ends up selling pirated DVDs with his new girlfriend, whereas teenage Muyu and his friends work at night, pasting posters to advertise fake documents, from university diplomas to IDs. They all spend time hustling and always aspiring for more in the city in which competition is ruthless.
Without education, without connections a young Chinese cannot expect much more than a day-to-day existence. And yet these young people dream big while being satisfied with small joys: watching Beijing buzz from the rooftop of their hutong, drinking beer with friends, falling in love with a pretty waitress. Life, while being hard and demanding, can also be exhilarating.
Xu, with tremendous empathy and tenderness towards his characters, skilfully depicts what it means to toil in Beijing without prospects for a better future. The goal of his characters is not to go from rags to riches but to get by, to not be defeated and be forced to go back to Jiangsu with nothing.
I was totally immersed in these books and saw them as slices of life. If I had to say what these stories are about, I would quote the lyrics of the song “Beijing, Beijing” by Feng Wang which accompanies this post: “People here comfort and embrace each other in times of struggle, search for and chase after the last gasps of their broken dreams.”

I think this is a 3.5; it is well written but it is not coming back unbidden to inhabit my thoughts as I expect good books to do. One thing it does do well is to convey the fluidity of the life of people in their twenties, moving as observers or passive subjects of others as much as actors, from one episode and love in their lives to the next. One gets a sense of the lives of Chinese coming to the big cities and ending up living very much on the margin, but without the will to go back; something might turn up.

A short story, about two young men who were taken by the police for selling fake DVDs, how weird is that when most products in china are copies? Sorry I don’t mean any harm by this, I feel anyone can visualize a product, wasn’t the radio created by two people at the same time?
Anyhway, one was freed first, he went to the place they were taken from, under a bridge. And swore that he will get his friend out of prison, there and then.
The story shows the struggle young people live under if they have no one to look after them. You find the rich are at the university and the poor are selling the fake DVDs outside the gates; you would think that they would buy the originals wouldn’t you.
The book goes on and on, with food and drinks and cigarettes. (I don’t want to mention the sex, as there was too much of it too). However, I do feel that there is philosophy in the story, it does make us think, why would young men and women be so desolate, and go to extreme measures to live?
I was waiting to know about the cigarettes on the book cover, then I found out when Dunhuang ran and Qibao was running after him and collecting the cigarettes that he was smoking while running, thirty in all, what a scene, I wanted to watch that (obviously in the cinema and not on a pirated DVD)
If you don’t mind the language, the heartache and the agonies of the young, you are on a big treat.
One last word, the ending is similar to the beginning, barring one difference, a woman was going to have a baby.
One last anecdote, when I was living in Dubai, a Chinese lady used to knock on our doors, selling DVDs, and I used to buy some from her, I wonder what happened to them now?
Opps, I think I had said too much!
Excerpts
“white collar workers and company managers — too busy to even take a piss, they needed relaxation more than anyone. To splay out on the sofa and enjoy a good story. Not a book — who still read books? — but a film, a feature film, a big Hollywood blockbuster. If only Spielberg made a new movie every week. .”
“it was a year of bad omens”
“Dunhuang nearly fainted from happiness. Heaven had dropped a penny straight into his pocket”
“You go around looking like the weight of the world is on your shoulders.”
“He smoked one cigarette after another, tossing the butts aside. Qibao followed behind him, picking up each butt he tossed, and in that way they eventually arrived at Suzhou Bridge. More than an hour of walking — she hadn’t walked so much in all her years in Beijing. Her feet were aching; she felt she couldn’t take another step. She flagged a taxi on the night shift, and pulled up alongside Dunhuang.
“Get in,” she said, showing him her handful of cigarette butts. “If you want to keep up this stupid act, you can forget about seeing me again.”
Dunhuang looked at the cigarette butts in her hand — thirty in all. He opened the cab door and got in.”
“in a place like Beijing anything could happen.”

A vastly entertaining and fast-paced read - not the *highest* quality writing. Few plot holes and not much character development, but some fun twists and turns along the way!

Read
April 13, 2026The misadventures of a pirate DVD salesman in Beijing, one of Xu's impoverished yet strangely honorable urban immigrants in a new China which feels at once infinite with possibility and cripplingly stifling. Totally up my alley, this was a lot of fun.

[Actual rating: 2.5 stars]
I am fond of this bold new genre of Chinese literature, which breaks out of the safer molds of history and art. This is what we all want to read about from a Chinese author: overcoming hardship, finding love and meaning in life, the sensory overload and beauty of daily life in China. When reading this type of novel, originally written in Chinese, of course, don't expect it to follow Western literary rules. Thanks to the author's Eastern perspective, the Western reader gets a taste of the realities of face-saving cultures and life lived in euphemisms, metaphors and Chengyus. Eric Abrahamsen admittedly does a remarkable job translating, leaving us with Chinese culture seeping right through the rich English descriptive prose.
In this fast-paced novel, Xu Zechen gives us a glimpse into the lives of his characters making a living off sales of forged IDs and pirated DVDs. It's not pretty and the moral compass is turned onto its head. This is the humanizing story of survival behind some of those selling "watch bag dvd"s in every large city across China. However, what begins as a promising story sadly ends incredibly abruptly. You'd think the author lost hope for his own plot. We're left with many unresolved mysteries along the way, sorely underdeveloped characters lacking agency, numerous lifeless, gratuitous sex scenes that break up the plot and strip us of hope (maybe to increase book sales?), depressing partner swaps, not to mention THE most disgusting book cover ever. No resolve on the last page whatsoever. Even pregnancy and birth, LIFE!!, is depicted as lifeless pursuit and disgusting. Sad. Hmmm.
