As everyone know by now, I’m not particularly keen on mystery novels, so it really takes a helluva mystery novel to catch my attention and get me to dish out star-ratings left, right, and center. The Manila Strangler by Steven Donahue is one of those books that I want to love, but because (and I’m being honest here) I don’t fall in the intended market as far as audiences is concerned, the book kind of lost me here and there.

Don’t get me wrong, The Manila Strangler is a good book and has a lot of

The Manila Strangler is set in Philadelphia. Karen Thorn is a boxer and ex-cop, she's now a private investigator after too many complaints about her aggressive dealings of suspects. After the murder of high profile artist Vicki Southfield, Karen is hired by Vicki's father to help solve the case. But he insists she's partnered with Detective Sean O'Brian, and they have to put aside their past relationship so that they can work on the case.

The killer has left very few clues, except the number 1 o

The Manila Strangler gives us the story of Karen Thorn, an officer-turned-private investigator and professional fighter, and her efforts to unmask a murderer: The Manila Strangler. The book is more thriller than mystery, driven by elements of suspense and action.

While the story carries forward in a fairly straightforward fashion, and the primary character of Karen Thorn is well-written, I found a certain amount of unplumbed depth here. Some of the protagonist’s conflicts, such as those with anot

The Manila Strangler is a prime example of the hardboiled genre, complete with the tough-talking ex-cop, the partner with a past, slick mobsters around every corner and a serial killer to be caught. The tone is set from the beginning with the heroine showing her physical strength in a boxing gym before showing her mental strength in fobbing off the attentions of two goons who want to sign her to fight for them. From then on unfolds a story that plenty will recognise: the struggling private detec ...more

Private investigator, Karen Thorn, is paired with Detective Sean O'Brien to find a serial killer in Philadelphia. The client, billionaire Jason Southfield, will stop at nothing to find the killer of his daughter. I like the twists and turns in the plot. There are side stories that get in the way, such as Karen's boxing and her problems with gangsters. Maybe this was thrown in to derail us from the true course of the plot.
I liked learning about Philadelphia through the good descriptions throughou

A quick breezy read. Female boxer, former cop, and now PI Karen Thorn works with former partner tracking a serial killer. Loved seeing the references to the town I grew up and went to high school in. Local Philadelphia area writer Donahue writes a fast paced story. Does not really open up the characters and give them full life. Only 175 pages long- did not have time to really build a stronger body for the mystery. Hopefully Mr. Donahue will write another Karen Thorn novel, and really build it ou ...more
