The Gringo's Hawk

Rate this book
This American author has spent thirty years in the rainforests of Costa Rica documenting the challenges and triumphs of his attempts to make an environmentally conscious sustainable living in this paradise. Jon Maranon offers a unique first-person account of nature and persons in conflict and the difficulties of meshing human existence into the once pristine rainforests of Costa Rica. His work promotes reader awareness of the natural environment, wildlife, ecosystems, and socioculture of this remote area of Costa Rica. Ecology and spirituality intertwine as he describes his journey in a mix of naturalist and lyrical prose that, along with humor and introspection, mark the style of The Gringo's Hawk.

In this absorbing biography, "The Gringo’s Hawk," the author invites readers on a captivating journey through time, chronicling his experiences in discovering and inhabiting remote land in Costa Rica during the 1970s. The author vividly recounts the initial allure of untamed wilderness, the challenges of settling in a remote area, and the intricate web of experiences that ensued as he witnessed the land's transformation. This narrative skillfully balances tales of conservation, development, and the delicate harmony between progress and preservation.

The strength of this biography lies not only in its narrative prowess but also in its poignant reflection on our responsibility towards nature. Through his experiences, the author offers invaluable lessons on environmental stewardship and the importance of mindful coexistence with the planet.

A highly enjoyable read that sheds light on the interconnectedness between humans and nature.

Excellent first person account of living in the earlier, wilder Costa Rica as a twenty-something, then adapting and growing older here. Especially good for nature-lovers like me as a "Retired in Costa Rica" senior adult blogging about it at charliedoggett dot net. ¡Pura Vida!

Been there tambien

I owned (60 Hectares.) Pura Playa on Osa Peninsula for several years in the early seventies. So your story was poignant, entertaining and a great walk through my memories. Great capture of the locals as well.
Thanks for the Trip.
