There are things that I really liked about The Absence: the stark, black and white illustrations; the characterizations of the villagers; the atmospheric brooding of Clay, and the sinister machinations of Taylor.

Unfortunately, I didn't feel like any of that paid off at the end, in which the driving mysteries of the narrative somewhat fizzled in a few "And then!" moments. The blurbs on the cover suggest this is a "dark and subtle" story, perhaps it was too subtle for my tastes.

The Absence was certainly atmospheric and creepy, but weirdly not in the way I had expected. Much of the suspense involved revolves around the feeling that the villagers are keeping secrets. However, there really is only the one secret that has grown and corrupted the town. I found the book to be interesting, but things were revealed so slowly that I almost stopped caring in places. The two main characters are Marwood Clay (disfigured mysteriously in the Second World War) and Dr. Temple (a newco ...more

I had no idea what to expect going into this. There was this guy signing his new book when I was in Forbidden Planet in London last year, so I decided to pick it up. It's a big, lengthy graphc novel, all in grubby but detailed black and white. Follows the story of a man who comes back from WWII,but nobody is pleased to see him return. There are disappearances, a mysterious stranger building something in the middle of nowhere, and a sense of unease and paranoia throughout, that Stiff ties up rath ...more

Strange premise that pulled me in with the cryptic illustrations and creatively styled panels.
As for the storyline, there seemed to be little at stake at either turn, leaving me to feel generally apathetic towards the outcome.
Impressively sketched, bit of a fail in narrative.

I enjoyed this story. As a writer I enjoyed Martin's story about how it all came together. The plot is complicated but crafted so well that it is easy to follow. The story keeps you guessing, while teasing you, letting you think you know what will happen next.

Good quick read. Cool premise. I didn't love the artwork style, but it did lend itself to the unsettling storyline of the dying town.

I wanted to give this 3 and a half stars. Was really interesting, and artwork good. But not the sort of book I'd read again.
