About the author

Michael Leunig, typically referred to as Leunig (his signature on his cartoons), was an Australian cartoonist. His works include The Curly Pyjama Letters, cartoon books The Essential Leunig, The Wayward Leunig, The Stick, Goatperson, Short Notes from the Long History of Happiness and Curly Verse, and The Lot, a compilation of his "Curly World" newspaper columns. Leunig also wrote a book of prayers, When I Talk To You.
He was declared an Australian Living Treasure by the National Trust of Australia in 1999.

Very odd. A lot cruder than the ones that occasionally do the rounds on Facebook. A few made me chuckle. Off to the op shop with this one. The book was part of an epic book haul from a Salvation Army garage sale today - I got two giant boxes of excellent fiction for $10, then took them to my favourite 2nd hand book store and (along with a few other books purchased super cheap at op shops this week) traded them in for $225 store credit. Win!

This book is a cartoon exploration of sex, slavery, dogs and plenty of other topics. Some of his panels are hilarious, some are poignant and some are undoubtedly risqué. All of them are for sure odd and crude. Definitely a book for mature readers. ⁣

There are few hits, but unfortunately, most miss. This little book about sex, dogs, and other odd topics does offer a few interesting discussions however overall it is not worth the trouble.

Why Dogs Sniff Each Other’s Tails is the 15th book by Australian cartoonist, philosopher, poet and artist, Michael Leunig. Page 1 answers the question in the title with a cute short story (and the cartoon version appears on p 92). Make that a very short story. After that, it’s 103 pages of Leunig’s unique cartoons. Some of the cartoons have also been featured in The Second Leunig, The Bedtime Leunig and A Bag of Roosters. There are cartoons that are hilarious, that are poignant, that are irreverent and some that are decidedly risqué. As always, some left me bemused, but I especially loved the Smell of Doom, the Missing Underpants, Hair Restorer, Blobby and Blotchy, Twelve Days of Christmas, Urinating on the Butterfly and Robinson Crusoe. A delightful dose of Leunig.
