“Steps Into Darkness” is the second book in Ben Woodard’s Shakertown Series. It’s the first of Woodard’s work that I’ve read. Nosiness to the umpteenth degree. I had to open up my review with that phrase. Ben is such a skilled storyteller, and has clearly worked at perfecting his craft. He knows how to reel in his audience and keep them craving for more. Writing a suspenseful piece can be quite difficult; however, Ben mastered the plot.

Steps into Darkness is a great book for boys and girls. Set in Kentucky in the 1920's the story quickly follows the adventures of two boys, who seek to solve a mystery. A dam is being built and there are many people who oppose the scheme. Tom, with Will's help, makes a list of suspects and set off on their own investigation, but they end up in a whole pile of trouble. This is a well written, fast paced book. Tom was a great character making his love of reading play a useful part in the story. Th ...more

It is a beautiful dam and the complexity of the engineering and the magnitude of what could go wrong are portrayed with a sense of great urgency which, as with the first, hastens the pace of the ...more
