Earle Alfred Birney was a distinguished Canadian poet and novelist, who twice won the Governor General's Award, Canada's top literary honor, for his poetry.
Strong collection. Birney's a versatile poet, offering everything here from conventional fixed-forms (e.g. the vilanelle) through to concrete poetry. I tend to prefer the more rhythmically-oriented work tot he more experimental stuff he did, but he was consistent across a long time, that's for sure. Remarkable range, vivid sense of imagery, supple voice. Admirable collection.
I have said before that I adore Birney. This is no exception. It is the second collection of his works I have read, and while it does not hold quite the same place in my heart as 'the Rag and Bone Shop', it is quite close.
Excellent. If I were to be content with one poet forever, it would be Earle Birney.
