I literally could not put this book down. The characters tore at and captured my heart and I felt so attached to them.
Travis, injured by a shark attack while surfing lost an arm and struggled to make a comeback emotionally. He wallowed in self pity and was a bitter and broken man.
His bother Devin who was his idol was far from the role model of an older brother. While Travis was recovering both emotionally and physically, Devin was not there for him and he had his own demons to contend with. Alc

Having lived on the Cornish coast, I have a few friends who are surf fanatics, so I was intrigued to find out more about this subculture. And I’m immediately put in mind the film 4th July, but in a surfing context – retired vets, trying to fill the gap that was once their life.

And what follows is great! This is a very human, gritty tale. While it begins with a surfing scene, you do a good job of describing the surfing in a simple way so that an average (non surfing) reader could understand it.

This is for the surfers. Appreciate the struggle with rehabilitation. Surfing narrative is real, been there; that's its saving grace. It will have a place with the surfing fraternity.

Especially strong when you describe the pain after the amputation and the frustration too. I know a guy who lost his leg in a bike accident, and this is almost word for word how he was afterwards.

You succeeded in getting me to care about your characters. As a father, I really identified with Carl as he nurtured Tr

I LOVED IT!! Just finished and thought it was fantastic. I have been to Hawaii and know some of the spots that you spoke about... it was really good at explaining about surfing and the other important issues of drugs/alcohol/loss.

Considering that I know nothing about surfing, it was easy to follow in that aspect so it kept me interested! I think you developed some good characters and their storylines really meshed! I think my fave character would have to be Carl. What a rock! Surprised myself b

This book was well written and knowledgeable about surfing on the North Shore. Loved seeing the story from different points of view without getting confusing as other books tend to do. A little romance, mixed with the emotional conflict of having to suffer through a not so ordinary ordeal. No cliche ending. Perfect in my books!!! (pun intended).

You are an amazing story teller. I'm impressed with your talent for natural dialogue and for changing POV's. I found them very believable, though I must congratulate you on your perfect guy voice. And great imagery and scenery as well. Your description is so vivid I could almost be there! Hawaii is a wonderful place and that comes across here! Surfing aint necesarily my thing but competition, aspirations and following dreams are everyones thing and you portray all those here wonderfully! Thank y ...more

Love surfing, surfer boys, anything to do with Hawaii. I've read this book three times now cuz I fell in love with Travis and could feel his agony. I also really liked the character of Brady and could hear his (and some of the others) "Hawaiian island" accent so clearly when reading. It made me smile to hear a bit of pidgin. It's really a specific way of talking and wasn't overdone like so many other stories. Shayla was cute too! Total hulagirl! ...more
