Goodreads, you have betrayed me and stolen 5 hours of my life.
4.59 average with over 170 reviews?!? This was easily the most misleading rating for anything on Goodreads I've come across in the past year. Such an inflated score that it seems fishy.

The premise sounded fairly interesting, but the plot was largely uneventful and overly simplistic and not scary in the least. It also was littered with annoying teenage girl neurosis covered in a pseudo confident shell. There was way too much whining

I really liked the mystery in this story, and the murder reveal was a good twist but a little too convenient; without spoiling things, there should have been serious tells that were not even touched on.

16 year old Mattie/Mathilda Hathaway is a foster kid who was attacked by her unstable 'mom' when she was 5 years old, her mom died from self inflicted wounds but Mattie somehow survived and started seeing ghosts from that day forward. Present day Mattie gets involved in the murder-mystery-disappea

After a 20h readathlon I have to say: This series is despite some flaws terrific. I simple couldn’t put it down and read both books in a row. If you are like me into ghost stories, mysteries with serial killer and main characters who don’t rely on boys to save them then this book is for you.

But first the things I didn’t like:
The boys: Every male in this story is in one way or the other handsome AND is attracted to Mattie and she in return is attracted to them. I think the story could have d

Oh my goodness. I find it so hard to believe this book has SUCH a high rating. Goodreads, you have fooled me again.

I think my problem with this book is that I read it as adult fiction which might not be fair since it's clearly YA. I was almost continuously rolling my eyes at the dialogue and how the reader had to be constantly reminded that Mattie doesn't like to cry and how it's hard for her to trust people. We get it. You don't need to remind the reader that it's "out of character" for your m

description

This book. This book was so frustrating and just plain nonsensical at times I had to keep reading it because at times I said, well this can't be where the author is going. Oh wait, this is. Lovely (not really).

A young adult paranormal book that showcases the most beautiful girl in the world that has men and ghosts falling in love with her at a single glance. This is the first book in the Ghost Files series. If you can't tell that I have no intention of going near another book in this series, let

Mattie Hathaway pretends she's a normal girl...well, as normal as a foster kid ever really feels. This is the closest she's ever been to a regular average girl next door. Her current foster family is a little odd, but they're nice enough. Mattie has a boyfriend she's happy with. So, what's holding her back?

Seeing ghost on a daily basis.

Even still, that's nothing new, she deals with it by ignoring the ghosts. Until her foster sister becomes one of them. Now Mattie must start listening to the gh

Apryl Baker’s THE GHOST FILES is that “ghost” story that is as spellbinding as it is eerie and entertaining. Take a justifiably suspicious and snarky teen with a “gift’ for seeing ghosts, mysterious disappearances of her fellow foster kids, as well as a ton of terrifying events and I have to say, I was completely gone from this world.

Mattie is no ordinary teen, not in her speech, her tenacity or her need to help others, and she stole the show for me. Apryl Baker had me cringing away from some ev

Yikes. Yikes, this book was terrible. I don't even know where to begin.

Perhaps with an editor, which Apryl Baker very clearly did not utilize. Random moments of forgotten tenses, completely unnecessary plot developments, unreliable characters (and not in a psychological-thriller way, mostly in a this-character-is-not-behaving-the-way-the-author-tells-me-they-behave way--which is a sad result of the telling-not-showing writing style, one that Baker suffers from immensely).

The repetition was bad e

I too, thought the boy characters were annoying.
Also feel it was quite predictable.

"A Haunting and Chilling Story"

This outstanding teenaged novel will definitely excite young readers, but it has also drawn this grandma into the drama. Mattie Hathaway is 16 years old. She has been in foster homes since she was five years old, and is pretty savvy. This evening she is getting ready to go to a party to which she and boyfriend, Jake Owens, have been invited. While checking herself out in front of the mirror of the bathroom, a young blond girl in a cute sundress appears to her. Matt

Freaking AMAZING! This book is just amazing! I always loved ghost stories, but this one here is just more than great. Mattie is just the girl I imagine would be able to see ghosts. Strong and brave enough to fight! At first I thought it was something kind of like Ghost Whisperer, but it's totally different and absolutely amazing! (view spoiler) ...more

16 yr old Mattie Hathaway has been able to see ghosts since her mother tried to kill her when she was 5. Being in the foster care system is hard enough without everyone thinking you are crazy so she has never told anyone until she sees the ghost of Sally, a girl in the same foster home as her. She befriends a young cop named Dan, who doesn't necessarily believe her but wants to help her find Sally. A bit too YA for me at times, but a good read overall”

I read this book for one of the challenges for the Read Your E-Reader read-a-thon. It is a great YA paranormal horror story. I love stories about ghosts, and this one sure did fit the bill. So glad I got the chance to read it and I am anxious to continue with the story. For a free kindle book it was definitely worth the read.

The Ghost Files, is super creepy and intense. I couldn’t get enough. I read this within a day. I don’t read many in this genre. I was scrolling through Facebook one day and this was on my feed. I thought this looks interesting, I’ll give it ago. Surprisingly, I read it pretty soon after I purchased. Usually, I don’t get to books till the next year, if I’m lucky.

Mattie is a foster kid, who just so happens to see ghosts. I don’t want to go into detail about the whole thing. Because then it really

I was hooked on this book from the moment I read the synopsis. And as soon as I started reading it I could not put it down. I think I even stayed up late at night to finish it. I really enjoyed the main characters personality and how she was a strong female lead rather than a damsel in distress which is how many paranormal young adult stories are nowadays. Not only was that refreshing, but the plot itself and the suspense kept me on my toes and I had no idea what was coming, so it wasn't horribl ...more

The pros:

Officer Dan. Yep. Love him.

Mattie's attitude. I love sarcasm, and (while I think some things could have been done differently/less explained) Mattie had a lot of it. Apryl Baker never started making her soft, didn't start out with her being sweet and turning sarcastic or vice versa; Mattie's character developed as the story went, but her personality stayed true and she was a very fun protagonist.

Mattie starts out with a boyfriend, but what I really liked was that as we learned more abou

Hands down, this story is one of the most amazing story I have ever read.

This story is written in first person and is about 16 year old Mattie Hathaway. Now shes a cool girl, and I really love that mouth she has on her. Despite what she has been through, she shows us that she is still human and makes it easy for readers like me to relate to her. (Apart from the talking to ghosts part, I wish...)

She has seen ghosts since she was 5 and she has ignored them all her life, until one of the ghosts tha

Let me start by saying I'm a huge fan of horror films. And I love a good Stephen King. But I don't generally read books in the horror genre because I often find that it is the visual aspect of horror movies that really give me the biggest bang for my buck. It takes a truly talented writer to describe a scene well enough to convey terror and have me shaking in my boots.

So I'm really torn on how to rate this book........

The storyline is FABULOUS and it kept me turning the pages to find out what w

*I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review*

The Ghost Files is a fast paced YA paranormal suspense that's virtually impossible to put down once started. From the very first paragraph I was hooked. The main characters, Mattie and Dan, are just fantastic. I was a bit sad when I reached the end of the novel since I was more than ready for another adventure with these two.

I loved this book! Mattie is a sixteen year old girl who has been in the foster care system since she was five. Since her mother failed to kill her and then committed suicide. She is an intelligent, attractive young woman who is trying to live a normal life, going to school, making friends and going on dates with her boyfriend Jake. The problem is she "sees dead people"! After successfully ignoring the ghosts she sees, an encounter with her foster sister's ghost sends her into a frenzy, Sally ha ...more

This book wasn't entirely what I expected. With the title I thought it was going to be intense and scary as hell. Instead, the plot focused a little more on the character's relationship concerns and teenage dramas than the ghosts.

But that aside, it was told really well. The character voice was strong, and definitely encompasses a teenage thought process. Her back story was also really detailed and reflected her current behaviour. The pace worked well for me, and I was completely engaged the enti

Loved the ghost story plus the sinister plot, but I was not at all keen on the 'romance' drama, because Mattie's character is flitting in between 'boys' like a swing in the wind.
Nice cliffhanger ending... not too sure if it's enough for me to keep reading the series, as I don't think I'll be able to deal with the boy-drama.

When you read about a world you don't know--in this case a foster kid who sees ghosts--you want to experience it as if you did know it. Baker does a marvelous job of getting the reader inside the character's head. My favorite character is Officer Dan, the policeman who befriends her. A great read!

Words...cannot...describe...how much I LOVED this book. Hell, love is the understatement of the century. This book was FANTASTIC! It reminded me exactly of a horror movie I'd see on TV (I can't wait to see the movie!) and I'm SO glad that, while there was a teeny bit of romance, it was solely focused on horror. I also loved Mattie's character. She was funny, snarky, and quirky. It definitely seemed like she was a real person and not just some character in a book. I could hardly put it down! I al ...more

Awesomeness

I originally finished this book back in 2015. Back then I gave 5 stars. But to be honest I dunno why I gave it 5 that time. Haha Don't get me wrong, I LOVED the series. The reason why I'm rereading it coz the 5th installment is already out. And I'm really excited to read it. I still love Mattie. But I admit its a bit redundant and too sentimental. Haha Still highly recommended for everyone who loves a bit scary things about ghost. :)

The book was so realistic. The author was very descriptive and had good word choice. I never wanted to put my phone to stop reading when I am walking in the halls or when I am at home or in classes. The book started on an app called Wattpad and regular people write the books. This book was so good that they made it into a real book and series. I plan on getting the other 2 books.

With Halloween right around the corner this was the perfect thing to read. Baker gives the reader lots of spooky moments (I had goosebumps at one point) combined with a likeable narrator to create an awesome horror/coming of age story. Cheers!

So who am I? Well, I'm the crazy girl with an imagination that never shuts up. I LOVE scary movies. My friends laugh at me when I scare myself watching them and tell me to stop watching them, but who doesn't love to get scared? I grew up in a small town nestled in the southern mountains of West Virginia where I spent days roaming around in the woods, climbing trees, and causing general mayhem. Nig ...more
