Another of the cat-themed books floating around my house that are easy to pick up when I don't know what else to read. This was a collection of stories about cats, some of which, like Puss In Boots, I had read before. I was rather pleased to find the story of Dick Whittington's cat in here, since I had heard reference to it all my life but never read it.
This is a thrown together anthology of older stories with a cute cover of a kitten chasing a balloon, some of which are entertaining and fun to read, some of which are interesting enough but tend to drag on, and some of which are absolutely horrifying. Considering the cover and the title, I knocked a star off of the rating for every story that mentioned brutally killing a cat. If you are bothered by violence against animals, I would advise that you steer far clear of The Black Cat by Edgar Allen Poe and The Woman and the Cat by Marcel Prevost and be advised that Concerning Cats: My Own and Some Others by Helen M. Winslow makes mention of "disposing of" unwanted kittens.
I only read this book because my mother gave it to me. It is a bizarre mix of stories from the public domain, from cutesy Beatrice Potter to the horrific "Black Cat" by Edgar Allan Poe. I have to wonder if the editors even read that story before they put it in an anthology with a cuddly kitten on the cover. It is probably my favorite story in the book though, one of Poe's best. I found myself enjoying a lot of the 19th century memoir pieces because I love that old-fashion diction.
I really enjoyed some of the stories, but others were not very great. So I'm glad that I bought it at a discount, but I probably would have rather checked it out at the library.
