Let's face it, reading sucks . . . but movies are fun! In this children's picture book parody for grown-ups, Pixar writer and artist Josh Cooley presents the most hilariously inappropriate—that is, the best—scenes from contemporary classic films in an illustrated, for-early-readers style. Terrifying, sexy, and awesome scenes from such favorite films as Alien , Rosemary's Baby , Fargo , Basic Instinct , Seven , The Silence of the Lambs , Apocalypse Now , The Shining , and many more are playfully illustrated and captioned to make reading fun and exciting for kids who never grew up. A sly celebration of the things fans love most about these legendary films (and movies in general), this is one book that probably should not be read at bedtime.
Joshua Cooley (born May 23, 1980) is an American animator, screenwriter, director and voice actor. He is best known for working on 2015 Pixar's animated film Inside Out and directing the short film Riley's First Date?. He made his feature film directorial debut in 2019 with Toy Story 4, the fourth installment of the Toy Story film franchise series.
One of the many annoying things about being a parent is the interminable wait for your offspring to grow old enough to share in the joy of watching your favorite movies. The years creep by, and eventually they'll be able to sit still long enough for Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark...but what about your R-rated favorites? Alien, Clockwork Orange, Goodfellas, Jaws and The Godfather...When, oh when, can your kids enjoy those classics?
The answer is NOW, baby!
This exquisite parody of a Little Golden Book is a perfect way to introduce the young'uns to those previously forbidden scenes of sex, violence and hillbilly rapists!
Imagine the fun dreams your child will having after seeing THIS picture:
On second thought...maybe you'd better keep this one hidden away from the kiddies, or you'll have a lot of 'splainin' to do.
This is a decent collection of well done Golden Book style illustrations of R rated movies. There's nothing more or less to it. It's a cute diversion that takes maybe 5 minutes to read through. Enjoy the art, maybe make a comment about the movie choices (Robocop, Die Hard, Alien, The Shining, etc.), then put it down and never think about it again.
My only complaint is that I wish Josh Cooley would actually make whole picture book versions of each of these films, instead of just one picture/page from each one.
I also wish the list of other titles in the back of the book was real XD
A hilarious mashup of R rated movies and those Little Golden Books we used to read as kids. This book takes classic scenes from movies as varied as The Graduate to Donnie Darko and puts them in the setting of a children’s book.
Very funny. Illustrated in the style of the children's books like the Golden Books I grew up with, each page is a scene from an R rated movie.
Like the horse's head in the bed from The Godfather with the caption "I made him an offer he couldn't refuse, said Don Corleone." Another favorite, a drawing of the shower scene in Psycho with the caption, "Eek Eek! Eek! Eek!", went the orchestra.
This would be a great little gift book for a movie lover.
ReRead 23 December 2019 --- ReRead 12 March 2019 --- Hlarious and well-crafted. Kids book interpretations of adult movies, as the cover says. Starting off as online artwork, I'm so glad this became a published book, because it makes the Little Golden Books parody all the more direct. From the "Stolen By" label in the front cover to the unique patterned backgrounds behind each illustration, Movies R Fun is as delightful as a whole book as is its individual pages. And the back cover, listing other "titles" in the Lil' Inappropriate Book series, gets even darker.
A book that combines my love of Pixar style art with my favorite R rated movies. The art in this book is amazing! Also the captions are well picked and very amusing. My only complaint is that the book is so short. Though considering its done in a childrens picture book style this does make sense. I really hope that Cooley makes more of these books or releases a large coffee table book of his work.
This is a super creative and absolutely hilarious gift book I treated my movie/book loving self to. The artwork is brilliant and the writing just simple enough to be fantastic. Capturing some of cinemas finest moments, this is definitely a book for big kids only.
Very cute book with Pixar inspired renditions of classic movies. One of my favorite images was from the Silence of the Lambs. Love the detail Josh Cooley put into the pictures.
Imagine the most memorable scenes from everything from THE GODFATHER to FIGHT CLUB rendered in Little Golden Book style. This obviously isn't for kids.
Hi-freakin'-larious. Famous scenes from (decidedly adult) movies (The Big Lebowski, Pulp Fiction, The Godfather), rendered as pages from children's books.
