A good, comprehensive overview of everything a beginning koi-keeper needs to know and then some. Although I checked this out to learn about various patterns, it starts out with how to build your pond, things to consider (distance from house, depth and materials needed, filtration and substrates, etc.), then followed by the nitrogen cycle and other parameters to keep an eye on. Foods are discussed, as well as most diseases you'd be likely to come across. If I were actually to set up a pond, this book has plenty of information.

The second, smaller half discussing patterns and varieties is discussed from a showing perspective- what makes a good quality sanke or kin-gin-rin, and what categories would some fish fall into depending if they were at a Japanese or Western show? May not be as useful for the hobbyist not going into shows, but I found it fascinating.
