Nancy Rhyne's first collection of stories,  Tales of the South Carolina Low Country , was an award-winning book. Now she has given us another collection of fascinating tales, and like the first, it is a winner. Once again the author has mined the rich folklore of South Carolina. Nancy Rhyne has traveled all over the world and has collected coastal folklore on three continents, Greece, and the British Isles. But her first love is the South Carolina coast, and she has written dozens of articles and books about the area, its history, and its legends. While living in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, she taught a course on South Carolina folklore at Coastal Carolina College in Conway. She now lives in Ft. Myers, Florida.

This sequel collection to Tales of the South Carolina Low Country contains twenty-two tales, ghost stories, and humorous narratives and seems as interesting as her first collection. However, she has a much greater chronological range, some of them dating from the 1700s to twentieth-century stories. Again, a smooth retelling of Low Country stories of mysterious happenings with voodoo and unexplainable events of nature.

Enjoyable! I feel like there was a varied mix of supernatural tales and quaint/interesting happenings, like Clark Gable's visit to Hampton Plantation (which is now a state park where I bought my copy of this book, actually). Wild shifts in tone; some outrageously funny - like those involving Dr. Buzzard - and some more tragic. I continue to enjoy the evocative descriptions of people and place.

Quick read purchased in Charleston’s airport bookstore and finished before the plane was in the air. 120 pages of fairly interesting stories but was hoping for more of the supernatural/paranormal variety after reading the first Tales of the South Carolina low country.
