4.75!
I love this book so much, and my rating increases every time I reread this!
"My name is Sam Cortland... and I will not be afraid."
.
"My name is Celaena Sardothien," she whispered, "and I will not be afraid."
Yes, I am crying 😭 this book is hands down the best best best BEST prequel I have ever read.
Lemme just review each part separately:
ASSASSIN AND THE PIRATE LORD:
4.50!
This one was such a perfect start to this story, as it contributes to the beginning of Celeana's story that one could ask for. It wasn't that long, like I think it was around seventy pages, but so worth it like we got to see so much and I can't stress on how well written it is, the tiny details that are scattered throughout this story and the nuanced analysis on Celaena's story that we get and truly *chefs kiss*. In this part, we follow Celaena and Sam go on a mission to the highly esteemed and hawt pirate lord, Rolfe.
Celaenas character depth and her character arc is so monumental here, we don't fully know her story we are just told that she Arrobyn's protege and that's it but through her acts we are meant to shape up our thoughts on her character and in my eyes every act of her came from a place of kindness, under all that rough exterior, she had the kindest, purest heart that made such important changes. We get to know her views regarding the world and her conscience, and how she fights for those who cannot fight for themselves. Here, we see the good that she possesses and her willingness to do what she thinks is right despite the brutal consequences, and I found that beautiful.
Sam Courtland 😔🙏 how I'd do anything for this man. I loved him. This part shows us the transition in Sam's feelings for Celaena, though not a lot, but we get to feel the slow burn, which was just so well written, and his ability to motivate and help Celaena do the right thing moved me so much. I loved him when he stood for her. The slow burn that this part ignited. I HAD TO WAIT TWO WHOLE PARTS FOR IT TO FORM, and man, did I love it. You will forever be loved.
“He couldn't be dead. Not from the dagger, or those dozen pirates, or from the catapult. No, Sam couldn't be so stupid that he'd get himself killed. She'd... she'd... Well, she'd kill him if he were dead.”
.
“He couldn't be dead. Not from the dagger, or those dozen pirates, or from the catapult. No, Sam couldn't be so stupid that he'd get himself killed. She'd... she'd... Well, she'd kill him if he was dead.”
.
“Nervous?" he asked, his voice barely audible above the steady slice of his oars through the calm bay.
"No," she lied.
"Me too.”
THE ASSASSIN AND THE HEALER:
4.30!
This is the second part, which I think is the shortest. It was the aftermath of Celaena being sent away by Arobynn Hammel as her punishment for disobeying his orders. So, she stumbles across this pub on her way to the red desert. This part isn't my favorite, not because it's bad, but rather because of its short length and because this doesn't offer much, but the interaction between Yrene and Celaena was something that I grew to love so much. I love the unintentional networking Celaena was doing; she helped so many people, including Yrene, and her giving Yrene self-defense lessons?? Lmao, I loved it. This part makes me excited to read Tower of Dawn and Kingdom of Ash.
After this part, I waited six books for them to meet again, and it was so, so, so worth it!
"Magic had been gone all these years. And the gods were dead, or simply didn't care anymore. Yet there, deep in her gut, was a small but insistent tug. A tug on a strand of some invisible web. So Celaena decided to tug back, just to see how far and wide the reverberations would go."
.
“For wherever you need to go - and then some.
The world needs more healers”
THE ASSASSIN AND THE DESERT:
4.68!
The red desert is where Celaena is sent as a punishment for her actions in Skulls bay and honestly this might be my second favorite part, the characters in this story are so well wirtte, the Master was honestly my favorite because he was so compassionate while being an assassin lord Illias's character was fun too but Ansel stole the show for me, she was so badass and you can't tell me that these two wouldn't be best friends in a much normal world. I kind of didn't see the betrayal coming the first time around, but this time I knew 😭 But yes, I liked Celaena's training with the mute assassins, and we see her fighting range and her capabilities. Despite the action, we also get to see Celaena make new friends like Illias, the mute assassin, and Ansel of Briarcliff. Also, the Sam flashbacks were so good!!
I loved the part where Celaena shot an arrow a minute late, purposefully so Ansel could make it out alive. My heart 🥹
I loved it because when they make an appearance in Kingdom of Ash, I was screaming, which makes this part specifically one of my favourites.
“As the memory of that day echoed through her, she remembered the words Sam kept screaming at Arobynn, as the King of the Assassins beat her, the words that she'd somehow forgotten in the fog of pain: I'll kill you! Sam had said it like he meant it. He'd bellowed it, again and again and again...”
.
"Celaena took a long breath. 'So the people of Terrasen will always know how to find their way back home. So they can look up at the sky, no matter where they are, and know Terrasen is forever with them."
.
“One arrow, that had been her promise. But she'd also promised Ansel that she had twenty minutes to get out of range. Celaena had fired after twenty-one.”
THE ASSASSIN AND THE UNDERWORLD
4.60!
This is the part where Celaena comes back to the assassin guild after her training in the desert, and I was beyond excited for this part because we were finally getting the romance, the confrontation, the yearning, and because the slow burn and the interaction between Sam and Celaena were just so, so so so good! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I couldn't stop SCREAMING at my book, knowing what was ahead for them. I knew that these two were a tragedy in the making, yet I fell for them harder than I expected.
My favourite scene from this part was the part where we get to see the flashbacks when we see Sam threatening Arobynn that he'd kill him if he hits Celaena, and the deal he made with Arobynn for Celaena's protection, AAAH 😭, and the things that he said to Celaena made my heart swoon. We also get to see a very misunderstood and flawed character who becomes one of my favourites later on, a courtesan named Lyssandra, who's also a shape shifter, but we get to know that in Queen of Shadows. She was a bitch in this part 😭 like I did not particularly hate her because I knew why she was the way she was, I just loved Celaena more.
“What's your name?" he asked above the roar of the music.
She leaned close. "My name is Wind," she whispered. "And Rain. And Bone and Dust. My name is a snippet of a half-remembered song."
He chuckled a low, delightful sound. She was drunk and silly, and so full of the glory of being young and alive and in the capital of the world that she could hardly contain herself.
"I have no name," she purred. "I am whoever the keepers of my fate tell me to be."
He grasped her by her wrist, running a thumb along the sensitive sknin underneath. "Then let me call you Mine for a dance or two.”
.
“I love you," he repeated, shaking her again. "I have for years. And he hurt you and made me watch because he's always know how I felt, too. But if I asked you to pick, you'd choose Arobynn, and I. Can't. Take. It.”
.
“In the silence of her bedroom, she swore an oath to the moonlight that if Sam were hurt, no force in the world would hold her back from slaughtering everyone responsible.”
THE ASSASSIN AND THE EMPIRE:
5.00!
I WAS NOT READY FOR THIS ONE AT ALL😩
Sarah J. Maas slayed this part so bad. It was easily my favourite part. The romance the twist and the heartbreak were just too much and the two plottwist had me hating Sarah so much bcause she just did not kill Sam 😭 It makes me cry everytime I reread it because he was such a cinnamon roll ( who could most definitely kill you) but he was so loving and caring and he would have been perfect for Celaena if rowan was out of the picture. AAAAHHHHH I loved him so much. I wasn't ready to read this part. I kept putting it off, knowing how it would end and how I would end up, but I still loved it a lot.
Their love for each other, the lavender soaps, the eyes, I just feel suffocated thinking about it! It's so agonizing.
I also felt that the ending was so poetic because with Sam, Celaena lost her human self, and I honestly cried for hours ✋
“She would tuck Sam into her heart, a bright light for her to take out whenever things were darkest.
And then she would remember how it had felt to be loved, when the world held nothing but possibility. No matter what they did to her, they could never take that away.
She would not break.
And someday ... someday, even it took her until her last breath, she'd find out who had done this to her. To Sam.”
.
“She wouldn't leave him like this, in this cold, dark room.
She yanked out of Arobynn's grasp. Wordlessly, she unfastened her cloak and spread it over Sam, covering the damage that had been so carefully inflicted. She climbed onto the wooden table and lay out beside him, stretching an arm across his middle, holding him close.
The body still smelled faintly like Sam. And like the cheap soap she'd made him use, because she was so selfish that she couldn't let him have her lavender soap.
Celaena buried her face in his cold, stiff shoulder. There was a strange, musky scent all over him--a smell that was so distinctly not Sam that she almost vomited again. It clung to his golden-brown hair, to his torn, bluish lips.
She wouldn't leave him.
Footsteps heading toward the door--then the snick of it closing as Arobynn left.
Celaena closed her eyes. She wouldn't leave him.
She wouldn't leave him.”
.
“She had believed she could love Sam and not pay the price. Everything has a price, she'd once been told by a Spidersilk merchant in the Red Desert. How right he was.”
Overall, the best prequel that I have ever read would HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!
