Little Dionne´s household is an extremely hostile environment: a father who left years ago; a mother who is emotionally absent and three older siblings, triplets, who seem to live only to humiliate Dionne.

Unfortunately, there are several flaws to the plan, the first one being… Lionne is a bitch. The second problem is that Lionne refuses to leave long after Dionne´s childhood is past and done. Lionne stays for good and she is still alive, well and around when Dionne is… 36.
How is life for a successful grownup with an imaginary friend? It is hell, especially if you want to date.

Dionne is never able to keep a relationship because Lionne messes everything up, usually by the second date.

When Greg shows up, Lionne is surprised to see him survive after the first date, and the second, and the third. When Dionne decides to move in with Greg, she is desperate and running out of resources… until Greg´s teenage daughters show up. Then Lionne decides she will use the little angels to help her destroy the good relationship that Dionne seems to have with Greg.

Will Dionne be able to get rid of her imaginary twin from hell or will she always be bent to this obscure entity´s whim?

Some have said the book is a comedy. I loved the book, but I did not find myself laughing all the time. Sure, there are some funny moments such as when, as a grownup, Dionne decides to visit her sisters and find out about their pathetic lives. Still, the book has a casual, light tone and is very easy to read.

Coming from a dysfunctional family, I found myself rooting for Dionne all the way. She is a lovable, real character and I am sure all readers will grow fond of her.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to have a good time watching Dionne try to undo all the problems created by Lionne. At points, the book seemed ideal for a movie and I would love to see Cameron Diaz playing Dionne and Lionne. I am sure you will think of other actresses as you read the book.

This book is an excellent work by Miv Evans and I can’t wait to read more stuff from her.

How I Exiled My Inner Bitch is, hmm, I'd call it a chick lit (in a good way; some people seem to see the term as derogatory, but to me it conjures up breezy, hip, fast-paced tales of young women making their way through the tangles of relationships and careers in the modern world) with either a fantasy twist or a psychological edge, depending on how you look at it. Since the age of ten, Dionne, neglected by her mother and bullied by her older sisters and everyone else, has relied on Lionne, her imaginary friend, to get through life and protect her feelings with an attitude of, well, bitchiness. Lionne is very real to Dionne (and to the reader), and has her own distinct personality and style, but no one else can see her, which leads Dionne to live her life without allowing herself to get too attached to anyone or anything else. Until she meets the perfect man - then she's forced to choose between living her life Lionne's way, as she's done until now, or taking the chance of getting hurt, and learns that there are more ways to live life on your own terms than by pushing everyone else away.

All the characters are distinctly and vividly drawn, even Dionne's three triplet sisters, and I found myself loving or loving-to-hate all of them, or even, in a few cases, going from one to the other as the character grew and changed, or even both at once. I really wanted Dionne to find a way to find real happiness in her life, and was particularly affected by her growing relationship with Georgia, Greg's (her boyfriend) troubled younger daughter. Lionne came just to the edge of being annoying enough that normally I'd be tempted to put the book down, but apparently Dionne had come to feel the same way about her at that point and that's when she started to take control of her own life.

The writing is crisp and fast-paced. The author has a background in screenwriting, and the book reads in a very immediate way, as though it's playing out on a screen in front of you. For my taste, it got a little breathless at times, and the pace made it a little hard for me to really get absorbed into the book. Otherwise, though, the writing style is very clear and polished.

How I Exiled My Inner Bitch is a quick, fun, well-crafted read with an uplifting message that in order to really live, you have to be willing to take some chances. ...more

This book had me had me at the title! I had to pause while looking through R2R because it drew my attention. Then I read the synopsis and was hooked. I had the pleasure to read it for review and was immensely glad I got to. It was a great run read that I truly recommend.

This book was great! It was funny, quirky, and overall good. I really grew to love the main character, Dionne. The only question that I have is what happened to Mike, her boss? He was in the story and then just disappeared. I loved the way the story turns out, but I just figured he would have tried to find Dionne later. But Dionne, at thirty six still had hers and simply put it made life complicated, on so many levels. Greg, who was a wonderful friend and lover in the beginning soon showed his passiveness as the relationship grows going a long without making a stand. I wondered at times if he believed in anything or was it easier just to go in whatever direction the tide took him.
His two daughters, assess the situation. Living with an addicted mother who allowed them so much freedom that they had no boundaries, trying to make sense of it all because both parents were absent on so many levels.
Once Dionne exiled her inner bitch and took a closer look at Greg and the two daughters she new that she will have to come up with solutions. For so long Greg just went along, that he truly did not know how to act differently. I love how the character evolved from a single-minded no caring person to a mature woman who took charge, makes the decisions and still makes Greg look like a man in front of the kids. Never breaking him down but rather lifts him up, something you do not see often with self-absorbed women. The lessons she has learned from her own life she applied now in them, and although we all know that life can hand you some unsuspected turns they were more prepared to handle it as a family. You can only truly know each other when one is willing to make the effort to change. Willing to walk that extra mile and not take offense. Sacrifice.
Well written the story took you into the deep recesses of a mind struggling to cope with rejection, rage and loneliness, overcompensating in other areas like the character's workplace, where she excelled to the top. Many looked past the obvious problem to help her but yet in her delirium she never saw it.
I loved the sister Kerry who really tried to reach out to her sister, knowing to well what she and her triplet sisters did to their younger sister. Not allowing the past to hold her in a slump but to change, for the better.
This is a slow read with many variables to take in account, making you almost tired at times, but yet the author kept your focus on the plot until the final page. The slow building romance with its ups and downs interesting, as each person discovered their weakness and strengths, willing to compensate to make it work.

So when I heard that How I Exiled My Inner Bitch was a psychological comedy, I was immediately interested.

Now, I am not usually one to judge a book by its title (especially because I suck at coming up with titles in my own writing) but this one definitely intrigued me. Not to mention, the story is even better than I would have initially imagined.

The characters in How I Exiled my Inner Bitch are extremely well-developed. Dionne is a good protagonist, and certain aspects of her are very easy to relate to. Lionne was definitely my favorite, not only acting as the most entertaining character by far, but really causing the reader to think.

Even now, after completing the novel, parts of it are still fresh on my mind. While reading, I really had to question the reality of certain portions. Although it is clear that Lionne is imaginary, Evans does such a great job with her character, I felt that I was Dionne and actually believed her to be real. Having a realistic fiction novel that gets the reader to question reality is truly a gem to discover.

Having Dionne as a connectible character just makes the reading experience even better. I'm the middle child of three, and I know what it is like to feel the odd one out with siblings. Just as I am sure that many readers can connect to having that nasty voice inside of their minds. (Even if the voice isn't personified in a schizophrenic kind of way.)

How I Exiled my Inner Bitch is highly entertaining and comedic. Some parts had me chuckling to myself to say the very least. Although being very funny, Evans still manages to convey dark pasts and serious themes.

I loved every minute of How I Exiled my Inner Bitch, and highly recommend the novel. Readers are sure to be in for an entertaining and gripping experience. And they might just wonder how they were affected by the imaginary friends they had as a kid. ...more

This review will be hard for me as it is quite frankly the first time I read a book in that genre and style.
The title had caught my attention and that's why I entered the contest even if not my usual read.

How I Exiled My Inner Bitch by Miv Evans proved to be an interesting and enjoyable listen and not at all what I expected. Initially it is told from Dionne's ten year old point of view, the 'lonely young protagonist trying to make sense of her hostile world' plot, so common in fiction for the young, created the illusion that I was listening to cross-over literature. However, the title, general language and humour of the narrative firmly cements the book in the adult realm, while the combination g How I Exiled My Inner Bitch by Miv Evans proved to be an interesting and enjoyable listen and not at all what I expected. Initially it is told from Dionne's ten year old point of view, the 'lonely young protagonist trying to make sense of her hostile world' plot, so common in fiction for the young, created the illusion that I was listening to cross-over literature. However, the title, general language and humour of the narrative firmly cements the book in the adult realm, while the combination gives the book an interesting, almost holistic, perspective on the emotional and social development of a child, from a dysfunctional family, growing into adulthood.

Dionne's imaginary twin (bitchy, manipulative, destructive and toxic) Lionne, arrives on the scene at exactly the moment when Dionne, aged 4, realises that she is emotionally on her own. Bullied by her triplet sisters and neglected by a mother whose parenting skills parallel those of a sloth (if a baby sloth falls out of the tree the mother sloth doesn’t always attempt to retrieve it) Dionne's healthy coping mechanism kicks in and she conjures up an invisible friend who helps her conquer not only her isolation but even her school bullies. Of course, in children's books the mothers, while contemplating parenthood, don't lament their lax attitudes towards birth control and imaginary friends disappear before the protagonist reaches adulthood. In this book, as in real life, there are no such fast resolutions and childhood influences and sometimes even imaginary friends, are carried over into adulthood. It is exactly this that gives this book its edge, not just the humour of imagining how Dionne copes in social situations and her relationships, professional and intimate, with a constant invisible companion, but the realistic view of the perpetuating cycle of dysfunctional behaviours in relationships which is further highlighted by Greg, ‘the-go-along-guy’ and his daughters.

Initially the narration of the audiobook bothered me. I usually avoid dramatizations and multiple narrator books as the change in voices seems to interfere, for me, with the natural flow of the narration. The children’s voices at the start grated a bit, and enhanced the misconception that I had chosen a children’s book, but once the narrative was told from the adult’s perspectives I was able to immerse myself into the story with ease. The narrator’s voices: Lindsey Gentile as Dionne; Bridget Fitzgerald as Lionne; Scott Wright as Greg; Kaitlin Nicole Morgan as Georgia and Stephanie Lovell as the triplets; worked together expertly and have helped me change my opinion of full cast narration; when well executed a full cast of talented narrators can add depth and meaning to a book not available to one person narrations.

How I Exiled My Inner Bitch is light-hearted and funny while tackling some pertinent social and emotional issues. It is also exactly what the title says it is, a physiological comedy, and well worth a listen. ...more

I am not really good at reviews. Usually I just write down whatever I think is important which is not what a lot of people would think is important. Plus I am sure I leave out a lot. Oh, and probably some spoilers, although I really try to avoid writing anything concrete about the story. So caveat emptor and so on.

I liked this book - I read it in several pieces, riding on the tube and so on, but didn’t pick up any other book until I was done. Took me a Finsbury Park - Blackheath and back ride, I am not really good at reviews. Usually I just write down whatever I think is important which is not what a lot of people would think is important. Plus I am sure I leave out a lot. Oh, and probably some spoilers, although I really try to avoid writing anything concrete about the story. So caveat emptor and so on.

I liked this book - I read it in several pieces, riding on the tube and so on, but didn’t pick up any other book until I was done. Took me a Finsbury Park - Blackheath and back ride, and an evening.

It is somewhat scary that I really, really liked the imaginary friend. Was much harder to like Mr One even though his actions were completely logical considering all we learn by the end (see, I’m trying not to give away all the plot things, but it’s hard). He is too much of a pushover and I was siding with Lionne most of the time - not a keeper.

Almost everyone is damaged in some way - and I could dive into all kind of musing on how lonely humans are even in the most populated cities and feeling lost, and disconnected and so on, but don’t want to.
But these are all normal, life sized damages - except maybe Dionne's hallucination of her imaginary friends.

Sometimes throughout the book I really envied Dionne for having Lionne - not the healthiest imaginary friends for sure, but she is certainly very candid and has a great, very sarcastic sense of humour. Although the vividness of Lionne raises some question about how crazy Dionne actually is.
I mean, she literally pushes Lionne out of the car. That’s a pretty solid, high level hallucination. I don't really want that bit.

What is really, really interesting - at least for me - is that there is no real story. I mean, there are events, logically stringed together, but it’s all so very mundane. School, work, finding boyfriend, moving in with boyfriend, coping with existing kids of boyfriend, etc. No real high drama, save the world, desperation, angst, or anything, it’s is all pretty mundane, and it still works.
It’s such an everyday story that one could quickly relate to it, and there were a couple of events where I just went “yeah, I know that one”. Different colours, city and people, but definitely very similar.

The only thing I can’t really agree with is the subtitle: A psychological comedy.
It is gripping and there are funny moments in the book, but I am not sure I would call it a comedy. Although it is definitely not a tragedy.
I say it is definitely worth reading, makes the reader think but not in the way a Dostoevsky novel would. More light hearted and easier to relate to it.

by an imaginary twin she created to get even with her sisters who always picked on her and a mother who neglected her. Lionne, the imaginary twin is the complete opposite in nature to the sweet self of Dionne and restricts her from coming close to people and from forming long term relationships. Desperate to free herself from Lionne, Dionne is ready to do anything but alas, all efforts fail and she is again left alone with a complaining Lionne.

Greg is a guy afflicted with his own share of quirks and so when they meet, theirs is a safe relationship with shallow love. The only problem with this situation is the presence of Greg's two teenage daughters who hate Dionne and are hell bent on making her life miserable.

Can she free herself from Lionne?
Is Greg the right man for Dionne?
Can they let go of their quirks and have a life together? Or will Greg's daughters finally succeed in driving this little solace for Dionne also to the ground?

I was new to the whole dystopian family concept and so everything was a novelty for me. The story is medium paced with characters developed expertly to suit their roles.The book engaged me from the start and had me turning pages to see what happened next.

A very admirable work from Miv and very entertaining. I give it a 4 out of 5. If you are in search of a different kind of an entertainer then How I Exiled My Inner Bitch is the book for you. :)

I am giving this book 4.5 I want an Inner Bitch Stars.

I really enjoyed this book. Miv's writing was amazing, her story was unique, and I could not put this book down. This book is a one of a kind, it is really such a heartwarming and lovable book.

I'll assume you've read the book synopsis and are familiar with the storyline.

I did not care for this book at all. None of the characters except Georgia were likeable, including the main character of Dionne. The book is in present tense, and has a mostly omniscient POV. I loved this book! It made literally made my laugh, and it had me dabbing at the corners of my eyes a few times too.

Dionne is a very strong and successful individual, but she wasn't always that way. Bullied by her older sisters and neglected by her mom, Dionne invents a "bitchy" alter ego by the name of Lionne.

When I first started this book, I wasn't sure if I was going to like it. It starts off rather slowly and the cutesy rhyming/matching names was a bit much but once the main character Dionne meets up with her inner bitch, Lionne it got much more interesting. I don't even know exactly what genre I would put this book in because it is so unique. In a good way!

Such a great entertaining read while still having some deep subject matter.
I really liked watching as the relationship between Dionne, Georgia and Alanah progressed.

Definitely has a strong story line and character development while being laugh out loud funny!
Anyone who ever feels like they have an "inner bitch" or voice in their head should definitely read this book. ...more
