Dark Luminance
Dr. Mackland Luther is a man driven to find answers, no matter the cost. As lead scientist on the Frameway project, he tries to solve the mysteries linking unlimited energy and quantum physics, and he is making progress.

Dark Luminance is written by E. M. McDowell and is a Sci-Fi, Horror, and Action novel. McDowell writes with a knowledge of technology and science. The book revolves around the main character, Mack, and his friends/coworkers as they are thrust from Earth into a parallel dimension of a similar world that is like our own on the surface. Unfortunately, that is where similarities end, as they end up meeting someone who has the same name and face as someone they knew on Earth and yet is an entirely different person.
Mack is plagued by guilt and ghosts of his past and is craving a release, but in his search for a greater energy source, he ends up dragging his friends and another person working at his lab along for the ride. It is not long before they are encountered and attacked by untold horrors. I must commend McDowell on this book because he has taken a lot of traditional science fiction ideas and given them an original twist that claims them as his inventions.
Dark Luminance is fast-paced from the beginning and doesn't let up until the end. It is written to be recreated as a horror movie easily. The possibilities of where this story could go are endless. The ending is very open-ended in that the reader can be left wondering if this is the end or if there is more to come. Personally, I am hoping to see several more books with these characters to explore what they may encounter next.
McDowell has introduced characters that are realistic and have doubts and emotional issues. He has also introduced characters that make you cringe and keep hoping they will die and that you will figure out their ulterior motives. It is easy to follow along on this journey with the characters that are brought to life on the pages.
Admittedly I was hoping that with the concept of parallel universes and that possible parallel selves may have been pulled back to Earth in our lifetime, we would have been able to get to know those characters and what they will be. I kept wondering if they were dead in one world, would they be transported? What if they are some of the horrors encountered in the new world? What would that do to Earth as we know it? This was one thing I felt was missing in the story, but perhaps it could be a second part not to confuse the reader. The only other negative aspect that stood out for me was in the last 10% of the story; it seemed that counting the characters was sometimes off. Sometimes, referring to the group as three and sometimes as four didn't always add up for me.
Overall, I give Dark Luminance 4/5 stars. It was an enjoyable read and had a lot of innovative ideas. I hope to see more books about these characters and concepts and hope that the ending will be the start of a new "chapter" in this story. You will enjoy this book if you are into Sci-Fi, Horror, Action, or Thrillers!

In Dark Luminance by E.M. McDowell, Dr. Mack Luther and his friends, Sean (the grounded scientist) and Billy (the jokester), find themselves transported to an alternate universe as the result of something going badly wrong with their Frameway project. Mack heads the small research team studying the energy that exists between universes. To add vibes of romance to the story, Lily, an attractive strong-minded security guard at the lab where Dr. Luther was working, finds herself transported along with them.
Their new world is filled with undead mutant humans, or Psidead, as well as vicious zombie animals. These zombies originated from taking a powerful hallucinogenic drug, Psikick. The drug not only gave them the power to live after death, but provided telekinetic powers for gangs of the Psidead to function as one. These Psi-powers could also be passed to others after death, allowing the Psidead population to mushroom.
Mack and his small team struggle to defend themselves from the Psidead and a few malevolent strangers they meet along the way. They also desperately work to reassemble the badly damaged technology that tossed them into this new universe, hoping it would provide a path home.
Early in the novel, the author goes into great technical detail in describing the Frameway project. It was difficult for me to follow. It brought back memories of my college physics, and I hoped I wouldn’t be tested on it later in the book. Fortunately, I wasn’t. The story and the characters developed rapidly from that point, into a suspenseful and exciting sci-fi thriller.
I found the characters believable and the story gripping. I remained focused on Mack, Lily and their gang as they struggled to get back home. A few new characters were also introduced along the way, adding depth. If I have any criticism, it would be the constant threat of the Psidead. I felt they became overdone at times and consumed the story, making it more of a zombie horror novel. That said, I enjoyed the story to the end.
E.M McDowell is off to a great start with this book. If you’re into sci-fi, you need to check out Dark Luminance.

"Dark Luminance" by E.M. McDowell was a fast paced sci-fi read. I must say this isn't my favorite genre, however this read kept my interest from the beginning all the way till the very end. I also found some horror, suspense, fantasy and even some thrills in this read. This author really knows how to bring it all in with 'zombies beast' only leaving me to say wow! We find that this doctor and his friends are "transported into a another universe due to the result of something going wrong with their Frameway project." From this transportation you will be taken to a world filled with 'Psidead' who are undead mutants humans zombie's. As this team struggles to get away from the' Psidead' and some other strangers to reassemble the 'technology damaged' that had brought them into this universe, will they be able to make it back home? Now, this is definitely one read that you will have to pick up to see how this author will brought the reader though all of this in this very detailed read. There will be so many twist and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat turning the pages till the end. Be ready for some very 'technical details' that was very interesting for the most part in this read however, I will say there were some parts of it I didn't understand. I did however find the characters were all well developed, well portrayed, and believable in this well written story in their struggle to get back home. For the ending... well again you will have to pick up "Dark Luminance" to read its ending or is it the end? If you are a zombie lover then this read will be right up your alley and I would recommend this read to you as a good read.

This book is a hybrid of Science Fiction and flesh eating Zombie Horror, which is its strength, as well as its weakness. If you like zombie novels, you'll like this one. It is not badly written and there is a story here. Personally, they don't do anything for me. That having been said, the author visualizes his action and characters well, giving good descriptions and generating some colorful dialogue. There is plenty of action, which is also well described. The biggest weakness is the predictability of the plot and the fact that the characters fail repeatedly to do what they need to do to resolve their problems and get away. A standard problem in so many horror and zombie stories. The other issue is that the story is very abrupt, especially at the ending, which the book really doesn't have. After the big explosion, it usually helps to bring the characters to some resolution. This just ends with the big explosion. I wouldn't give this book a thumbs down, it does have some imagination to it, but the plot never gets past the action requirements, which is not bad, if that's all you need.

Dark Luminance is an incredible story that is a mix in between of Doctor Who and The Walking Dead. With main characters being thrown into a parallel universe filled with zombies, it is action-packed and very fast-paced that keeps the reader on his toes.
From the very beginning, I didn't really know what to expect from his author. With all of the scientific talk, it seemed like the author got a little carried away with all of the information. When starting a book, I like to ease into it, to make sure that I can get into the plot without being too overwhelmed. But after few chapters, I realized why the author did the beginning like this. With parallel universe, it was important to understand the background of what happened. I would have liked to see a smoother transaction.
Main characters were well developed and with a fast plot, it was great to see how the description of these events planned out. The world-building itself was great and the zombies, or Psidead, was a refreshing read from all of the other, "regular" zombies. With a couple things that I could not have looked over, this is a pretty entertaining story that alot of zombie-lovers can find great.

Great summer read! Sci fi but not strange or super technical. I really enjoyed reading it and didn't want to put it down. Waiting for the sequel!

It is an alternate universe book about Dr. Mackland Luther, who, along with his friends/co-workers, is thrust into a different universe when an experiment goes wrong. They are stuck in an alien environment which is teeming with danger & it is hard to judge whether people they meet are friends or foes. They have to fight an unending horde of the zombies, or “psidead”, to be precise.
The main character is Dr. Mackland Luther, “Mack” to his friends, who is a man driven to unravel the secrets of the universe & is succeeding at it to some extent. He lives for adventure & throws himself into his work with a passion. His quick thinking & will to survive is admirable & he is very easy to like.
The other characters are his friends – who are also his co-workers, Billy Roland & Sean Flannigan, & Lily Decker, their security detail. Mack is the genius & Billy is the jokester in the group while Sean is the glue that holds them together – both at work & in the world. Billy is the funny guy who cracks jokes at inappropriate times & oddly enough, you miss his humor when he doesn’t. Sean is the person who keeps them grounded & in touch with reality & bridges the gap between them & the world. I really liked Sean. I liked everything about him. Lily is a strong, resourceful & beautiful woman who can think on her feet.
The story kept my at the edge of my seat, dying to know what happens next. I loved the way the story kept building up & the story progressed at a good pace. The various twists & turns made me bite my nails & twist my hair in anxiety – I just needed to know what was next. The plot was good and I loved the scenes after they find themselves in the alien environment. It was a gripping story & I couldn’t get up till I finished it.
I didn’t like the ending though. I wanted to know more & really didn’t want it to end. I really hope that there is a sequel because I need, want, beg for more. I was left with the feeling of “What? It’s over? No, want to know/read more.” I liked this book a lot & it was an excellent read.

I felt this book did quite a good job of pulling me into the storyline more or less straight away. I liked the relationship between the characters and there were a couple of nice flashback scenes that didn't tear me completely out of the story.
Zombies in themselves aren't a unique concept, but I felt that their origin was quite a unique one. The use of psychic abilities involved with the zombies was quite an interesting concept, too.
I was a bit disappointed that there didn't seem to be any of the main characters' parallel selves in the different worlds. The only person they recognised from their world was someone I hadn't actually met properly in the first place.
It was good to see that the characters did get hurt. I found myself caring about what happened to them and reading avidly to see what would happen next.
Billy was probably one of my favourite characters. Some of the comments he came out with really made me smile, even at some of the darker times during the book. The author did a good job of describing the zombies. I found myself cringing every time they appeared.
The other characters were fairly interesting as well, but I think the switching between POVs took away a lot of the twists/mystery that could have been involved.
I would definitely be interested in reading the next book/s in this series in the future. This was a fairly unique twist on the zombie genre with characters I liked and cared about.

Heather's Review
First off, I am a huge fan of science fiction and horror stories. so for those who aren’t, may find this story a bit much. I, however, found it to be very interesting with intriguing characters.
The early chapters contained quite a lot of technical jargon as the author describes the character’s Frameway Project that transports the small group to an alternate universe. This could have been lessened for my personal taste. When reading science fiction I tend to take the science factor almost as a leap of faith. It made those chapters slower to get through for me but I was glad that I stuck with it because once the science lesson was over it took off like a shot.
The characters blend together well as they try to repair their project that will hopefully take them back home, the adventures and dangerous foes they encounter make for fun reading. I am not in general a huge zombie fan but the Psidead, as they are called in this alternate world, are intriguingly well written that I really didn’t mind them.
If you are a science fiction fan but like me don’t need excess science information, I urge you to stick with it through the early chapters because once the author gets you past the whats, whys, and hows you find yourself on a wild adventure ride. I look forward to what the author will bring us next.

I would classify Dark Luminance as a sci-fi with a horror/fantasy theme. The protagonists find themselves in a parallel universe filled with zombies after an experience turned bad.
There was a time where I got lost a little with the scientific explanations but although I can't say if they were plausible facts or not, I want to give the benefit of the doubt to the author because it was well thought.
Once the story started, there was no respite. I was sucked in with the first attack of the zombie beast and it lasted until the very end, with a few unpredictable twists that kept me on the edge of my seat. I can already foresee a second installment and I can't wait to read it.
I would recommend that book to fans of zombies (of course) but also to people who wonder what if there was such a thing as parallel universes. What would we find there?

First, I must say that I’m not a zombie lover, I just can’t seem to love them.
Dark Luminance by E.M.Mcdowell was filled with mutant zombies, called Psidead.
For the first time in forever, I can finally say that I like reading about Zombies.
The way E.M.McDowell written Dark Luminance, I struggle to put it down. It’s fast paced, got a really strong plot, and well developed characters. I love a story with some twists and turns, and believe me, Dark Luminance has plenty that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
I recommend this book for all zombie lovers or if you want to become one. If got to admit that there were a couple of parts, and I really mean only a couple, that I didn’t grasp as much as I wanted to and it left me a bit confused. But other than that, a really good read. One that is worthy of paying for.

Dark Luminance is science fiction with a lot of action. It did get slow near the beginning because it got pretty technical when explaining the Frame but other than that it was nonstop action.
E.M. McDowell's writing is easy to follow and the story flowed well. I liked his descriptions because they gave me a good picture without being too wordy. This book is graphic, though, so I wouldn't recommend it for younger readers.
The characters were interesting and I felt like I got to know Lily and Mack pretty well. Hopefully there will be more about their friends in the next book...I'm guessing there will be another book based on the ending. As for the zombies, I've never understood their appeal but they were described well (yuck!).

Hopefully there will be more about their friends in the next book...I'm guessing there will be another book based on the ending. As for the zombies, I've never understood their appeal but they were described well (yuck!).
If you like science fiction, zombies, and a lot of action then you'll like Dark Luminance.

I don't very often give 5 stars but I am so happy to do so for Dark Luminance. I absolutely could not put it down. The story was exciting and fresh and gave a very unique perspective on the "zombie apocalypse" without actually making it the theme of the whole story. The characters were smart and well developed. You really get invested in Mack & his group and you cheer for them through the whole story. The situation that befalls them keeps you on the edge of your seat. I definitely will read more from this author. I am truly hoping there is a sequel because I just couldn't get enough in one sitting. Bring on the next chapter!

The beginning of [Dark Luminance] by [E.M. McDowell] made me feel like I was reading a science journal about quantum physics. Not something I would truly enjoy. It was like the about of detail [Tom Clancy] would put into describing the workings of a nuclear sub in his fiction works. As with Clancy's books a persevered and got through the tech stuff to the story.
The characters were not very well developed but the plot kept the action moving once you got past the beginning. I think as far as the setting went [McDowell] may have kept it purposely nondescript to give you the last feelings of his characters.
Overall I enjoyed the book and I am looking forward to the next. For older people like me I will make a pop culture reference about this book. "Oh boy."

This is a must-read novel. I loved the fast paced style of this book, the characters were strong and the storyline was amazingly written and well developed. I finished the book before I knew it and wanted more. I am looking forward to more from the author!

This was pretty good. It was a lot like Sliders meets The Walking Dead in it's premise of the main characters being pulled into alternate universes thanks to a malfunction of some experimental equipment in a project that they were working on. A very cool book.
