5 'totally turns my crank' stars!

"Sodding damn. She'd ruined his perfect loneliness."

I’m not a huge fan of science fiction, not real big on fantasy, either… but Steampunk, when done right, really turns my crank! And make no mistake about it, Zoë Archer does Steampunk right.

Zoe Archer captures the heart and soul of two extraordinary characters in Skies of Gold.

Kalini MacNeil and Captain Fletcher Adams are both suffering from war related trauma, driving them to excumminicate themselves from the outside world. Little did they know that they both ended up in the same place. Sharing their emotional damage allows them to slowly heal and find happiness once again.

Simply put this was a wonderfully stimulating, sexy, moving story, wrapped up perfectly into a steampunk adv

I just discovered that this is the last book in Archer and Rossi’s Ether Chronicles and I am completely bummed. Call me a very sad panda.

Even though this is the final book in the Ether Chronicles, a reader could start with this one, and then decide that they loved the worldbuilding so much that they wanted to start at the very beginning, Skies of Fire. Yes, I know, I’m fangirling a bit now. Sue me. (Please, don’t.)

I was given the opportunity to read Skies of Gold through Avon and Edelweiss in return for a honest review. When I received this, I was pretty excited. This is the first of this author that I have had a chance to read. Even though its the last in the series, I had no reservation in reading this. When you read the synopsis, it just draws you in and you can hardly wait to get started. Another aspect of this story that is another first is the Steampunk like theme to it.

It starts with Kali heading o

Where to begin? This romance is that and everything a reader would need to escape into another world far removed. Dive in and you'll find an island that is the opposite of an oasis. Cold, impervious, almost barren at first glance when Kali arrives. The place has been her family's keep for generations, and even so the small stone cottage aka home is hardly livable. Talk about roughing it. But Kali is not here for a vacation...she is here to escape. Coming from Liverpool after surviving the ravage ...more

I love this series and the Man O' Wars. Skies of Gold is a bit different from past books and, admittedly, moves a bit slower, with the action only really happening in the end.

However, this gave the perfect opportunity to explore Kali and Fletcher's personalities in depth. They were solid, fleshed out characters with some wonderful tension. As someone who values character over everything, I really enjoyed this.

As usual, Zoe infuses feminism into every aspect of the book, something I've come to b

Zoë Archer first came under my radar when she wrote two very charming historical romances that managed to pulverize my heart completely and made me feel great in the process. Since then, she'd written stories that have a stronger action bent, and while I still have a great time with many of those books, I never felt the same "someone walked all over my heart and it felt glorious" feeling with those books.

It is therefore a bit of a shock to discover that Skies Of Gold effortlessly floors me over

Skies of Gold is the 5th installment in Zoe Archer’s The Ether Chronicles but, oddly enough, it was my first sojourn into this mesmerizing Steampunk universe. I’m sure that I would have enjoyed this book slightly more had I read all of the novels that came before it prior to tackling this one. However, it has already received 5 stars, my highest rating, so that point it moot. At first I thought that the single locale would bore me; there’s only so much two people can do o

This series is one of my favorite steampunk series ever since I read and reviewed Skies of Steel or as I called it “Skies of Awesome!”. I seriously enjoyed everything about that book and the cover which remains (till this day) the picture on my iPad screen. So when the opportunity arose to be a part of the tour for a new installment in the series, I said “freakin’ A yo!’ :P

I have so many feelings about this book I don’t know where to start. First, there is no comparison to Skies of Steel; it’s a

I've had this book on my Kindle for a while, probably bought on recommendation and sale from one of the book blogs I follow. I remembered it was a steampunk novel but nothing else when I started it, and I was pleasantly surprised at what a lovely story it turned out to be. First warning, it is a romance and it does have a few X-rated scenes, though not as graphic as some novels I've read, but I'd keep it out of the hands of preteens and younger for that reason.

For the most part I have enjoyed The Ether Chronicles series. At times I haven't loved the pacing of the books and in a lot of the short books I've been left feeling like their was something missing. With Skies of Gold, I finally feel like I've figured out what's been missing - emotion. By far, I have found that this one has been the most emotional of all the books in the series, which I found created a much better romantic relationship between the hero and heroine.

I though I had read all of The Ether Chronicles but somehow I missed reading Skies of Gold when it first came out. I discovered it a few days ago when it was listed it as one of the best ebook romances of 2013. I really like this series and I am sad to find out this is the final book.

Both of the characters in the series are wounded but in very different ways.

Have I ever mentioned how much I love steampunk? When I found out that steampunk was making the jump from Young Adult to Adult and then straight into Romance my heart just about stopped!! And this book is a great example of why - I wish there were more like it. Perhaps the author will take pity on me and let me read the rest of the series - otherwise I will just have to go out and buy it this fall with some birthday cash.

The first two-thirds were a solid 4-star read, the last third, while being well-executed in terms of action, didn't fit with the almost-dreamy quality of the earlier chapters of the book (which I loved), thus my three-star rating. The bad guy seemingly comes out of nowhere, so it was rather jarring, and I think this story was strong enough that it could have handled a quieter conflict than it had.

I'd definitely recommend Skies of Gold to fans of Meljean Brooks' Riveted, as it deals with similar

Well I had no idea what to expect from this novel but it seems it was a bit of several things. It was akin to Tarzan and Jane for a bit, then we moved up to a place in the story where Kali became a virtual MacGyver able to fix anything with a bit of string and a screwdriver. Let us not forget Fletcher who as a Man O' War (something akin to Wolverine except instead of claws he gets a huge body and really strong,

After beginning and not finishing a string of romances, this smart steampunk novel was a breath of fresh airship. Sorry not sorry. :)

It's about Kali, a female engineer who designed a pretty great prosthetic limb for herself after losing a leg in a battle in Liverpool, and Fletcher, a machine-enhanced soldier, Swiss Family Robinson-ing it on a desert island. The alternative history is thoughtful without ever subjecting the reader to long boring explanations, the writing is intelligent, and the ch

The Man o´ War Fletcher was a part of the battle of Liverpool and sacrificed his life, piloting his vessle for a crashsite away from population, and ended up on Kali´s island.

It was okay... Not much happens and the emotional aspect wasn't emotional enough for me so I was kinda just reading to see what happens next without really connecting to the characters.
I think that the premise was better than the end result. I think that the heroines' supposed PTSD could been written better and the hero's depression wasn't really believable to me but I liked the h&h for everything else. I liked the writing too so yay for new-author-to-me!

This series is such a fun ride. The simplest of the five storylines, Skies of Gold doesn’t falter in character complexity. An abandoned, remote island, far from the world of war, but not its effects. Guy on the covers looks a whole lot hotter than the book's description of Fletcher. Fletcher, the hero, has been hanging out on a deserted island for a few months and apparently resembles the Wild Man of Borneo. (To me, anything outside of a five o'clock shadow is ICK, so I pictured him like this anyway.)

Skies of Gold is set in an alt-history, steampunk world where powerful nations wage war in the sky with airships captained and powered by the cyborg-ish, enhanced humans called Man O
I liked Kali a lot. She’s clearly been through a horrible trauma, making her retreat to the remote island where generations of her family once used to live. Now no one has lived there for more than thirty years, leaving only a ruined cottage for shelter. Everyone she cared for in Liverpool died in the airship attack, she herself barely survived, trapped under ruins for days. She lost her leg, but has used her remarkable engineering skills to fashion herself a prosthetic. Not wanting to be a burd ...more

I received a review copy from the author.

Kali is a brilliant young engineer who was severely injured in a battle in the skies above Liverpool. She decides to move to a family cabin on a remote island to give her time to heal: mentally, physically and emotionally. Planning to live in complete isolation, she’s a bit dismayed to discover someone else occupying Eilean Comhachag.

yeah, this series is still awesome. Just in case you were wondering.

So it probably comes as no shock at this point for me to say that a) I simply adore steampunk and b) Zoe Archer is amazing. Because of both of these facts, the beginning of this review originally had a ton of fangirling and a few squeals that I somehow managed to translate into coding so that when you read them, you heard the ear piercing noise.

I dont even know how I did it.

I have not read the other books in this series and I was hoping that this could be read as a standalone also. It worked out just fine. I was able to follow this story without reading the others although I would like to read the others also.

This story did not have a lot of fast paced action in the first half and I usually read books with a lot of action. However with this story it works just fine. The story kept me interested and I did not mind that there was not a lot of action because that is n

You know those people who are so earnestly, relentlessly PC and enlightened, and tell you all about it every chance they get, you just know they're full of shit? Well, meet your MCs.

When Kali thought "Hmm, that's an unusual amount of devotion for a man to have for his captain" and then "The only possible explanation is that they must be GAY," I was dismayed there wasn't a full page of "NOT THAT THERE'S ANYTHING WRONG WITH THAT" to follow because without that standard I-am-not-a-homophobe discla

I was lucky to snag Skies of Gold: The Ether Chronicles as a Kindle cheapie (along with most of the rest of the books in this series) I really liked this steampunk romance offering by Zoe Archer (she is writing this series with her hubby Nico Russo and they are alternating books.)

Both of the characters in Skies of Gold are great and both are damaged. Fletcher is a mech-enhanced Man of War captain of a downed airship who is so tired of being a weapon he’s decided to remain ‘dead’ on the deserted

What an amazing book!....

This book was my first of the genre and I must admit I really loved it!

It's something between a historical romance (with the beautiful clothes and the decorum of the era) but with a modern twist like the use of strange inventions! Perfect combination for me.

Kalindi MacNeil survived the violent attack of the city of Liverpool, but she didn't survive unharmed! She lost a leg and her peace of mind, so in order to regroup and heal emotionaly she goes away to th
