Stephen William Hawking was an English theoretical physicist, cosmologist, and author who was director of research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology at the University of Cambridge. Between 1979 and 2009, he was the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge, widely viewed as one of the most prestigious academic posts in the world.
Hawking was born in Oxford into a family of physicians. In October 1959, at the age of 17, he began his university education at University College, Oxford, where he received a first-class BA degree in physics. In October 1962, he began his graduate work at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, where, in March 1966, he obtained his PhD degree in applied mathematics and theoretical physics, specialising in general relativity and cosmology. In 1963, at age 21, Hawking was diagnosed with an early-onset slow-progressing form of motor neurone disease that gradually, over decades, paralysed him. After the loss of his speech, he communicated through a speech-generating device initially through use of a handheld switch, and eventually by using a single cheek muscle.
Hawking's scientific works included a collaboration with Roger Penrose on gravitational singularity theorems in the framework of general relativity, and the theoretical prediction that black holes emit radiation, often called Hawking radiation. Initially, Hawking radiation was controversial. By the late 1970s, and following the publication of further research, the discovery was widely accepted as a major breakthrough in theoretical physics. Hawking was the first to set out a theory of cosmology explained by a union of the general theory of relativity and quantum mechanics. He was a vigorous supporter of the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics.
Hawking achieved commercial success with several works of popular science in which he discussed his theories and cosmology in general. His book A Brief History of Time appeared on the Sunday Times bestseller list for a record-breaking 237 weeks. Hawking was a Fellow of the Royal Society, a lifetime member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, and a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award in the United States. In 2002, Hawking was ranked number 25 in the BBC's poll of the 100 Greatest Britons. He died in 2018 at the age of 76, having lived more than 50 years following his diagnosis of motor neurone disease.

This is an uplifting book that speaks directly to its young readers, introducing Hawking and the questions he pondered about the universe, and concluding with the big questions future generations must ask of themselves.

In this picture book [2.5 for me!] physicist Stephen Hawking and his daughter Lucy ponder the mysteries of the universe but also more earthly pursuits such as how to take care of each other and the planet we live on. The text doesn't offer easy answers, instead suggesting that the answers will come from each of us. The visually appealing artwork, created with acrylic paints, pencil, and Photoshop, includes many images of the stars and space as well as a diverse collection of youngsters trying to troubleshoot the problems that plague us. Perhaps this book will start youngsters on their own journeys of questioning where they fit in within the wider world and what they can do to make the world they live in better, not worse. The idea of being part of something much larger than ourselves fills each page, prompting a sense of responsibility but also one of being so very small in the wider scheme of things.

This was such a well done book for children about asking the big questions. And it does actually invite children to ask some. But it's not all about black holes and the possibility of alien life. What about taking care of each other? (With an illustration of a little girl crying and another little girl reaching out to comfort her with a concerned look on her face. Brilliant!)

Another page says, "when we see the earth from space, we see it's home to all of us. One planet. One big family." What a wonderful thought for children to ponder.

At the end of the book, Hawking tries to answer some of the "Big" questions in terms simple enough for children to understand and some questions for them to spend more time discussing and wondering about.

Stephen Hawking's daughter Lucy has created a picture book based on an Earth Day message her father shared before his death. The book reminds readers of the big questions Hawking spent his life trying to answer. Then the book moves toward questions the current generation needs to consider in taking care of planet Earth. The book inspires young readers to do what they can to help others and move in positive directions. The book ends with five of the big questions Hawking focused on and answers to each of those. The end pages also include an explanation of Hawking's Earth Day Message that forms the heart of this book.

I received an ARC of this book for my honest opinion.

This great book by Stephen Hawking is all about the universe and our world. I loved the representation of children and the great questions Hawking poses to kids to think about. I also love that he answers some of those questions in the back. And even though Hawking's specialty is the stars, he urges all of us to remember the earth, too, and not to get so lost in the stars that we forget where we stand. A wonderful book to get kids interested in space and yet remember the Earth.

A good introduction to Stephen Hawking and thinking about the universe for kids. This man of science is blended in with taking care of the planet and being good with neighbors.

I thought the artwork was great. It was peppy, the space picture were outta sight, and it had energy for kids. Kids interested in space will be more interested in this book, I think.

This goes just a smidge into Stephen Hawkings work and he he is. It's basically a tease to look into it more. For a non-fiction, this was interesting and fun.

Adapted from his Earth Day message, this book is about how Hawking saw the world and inspired other to be enlightened by the world around us and asking the questions that can help us be kind and caring to one another and the universe we exist in.

The illustrations are lovely and having a message from a great mind like Hawking's in a children's picture book is delightful.

Another book I was so excited to read and then felt disappointed after reading it. It's just another of those love your neighbors and take care of the planet. I guess I expected more science based and more about the universe and our connection and place in it. A part of me does wonder if this is an actual book that Hawking wrote or said before he died or if his name is used to sell the book.

The message of love for our planet and everyone who lives here is the best part of this book. It also answers some big questions like what’s inside a black hole in a way that children can understand. It is a friendly book with a positive message.

Whenever you don't know what to do, remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet

It's a really beautifully put together book with a hopeful message for every age.
