Natural approaches to maintaining or restoring overall well being. Chapters are devoted to the health concerns of particular importance to African-Americans such as heart disease & diabetes.
Written by two African American doctors this book gives insight into dealing with a variety of health issues affecting the African American community, such as obesity, hypertension, addiction, heart disease, diabetes, and stress. All these ailments can be prevented or controlled. Natural health also takes into perspective the whole person: mind, emotions, body and spirit when offering treatment. What caught my attention the most was the misperceptions that some older African Americans have regarding hospitals -"The hospital is where you go to die, and I am not ready to die yet." There is still a strong association between hospital care and death; fear and distrust of the medical establishment could lead to deadly delay in seeking help. Once a person realizes/accept that they need treatment then it is too late and the situation becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy (hospitals equal death).
Puts into words the days of ole' directions on eating and self care. Helps to understand how the body responds to naturally grown plain foods. Excellent read and it works!
