Mother's Black Book

Rate this book
How does it feel to be treated like dirt beneath someone’s shoes? Or no matter how hard you push to get into someone’s good graces, you are continuously batted away as if you are an irritant pest? Ask Tara Lamont, hairstylist and fiancée to Wynton Lakatos – who struggles hard against the burgeoning attacks of Wynton’s mother, Doreen Lakatos. Doreen is no pushover. She might be the First Lady of Brandon View Baptist Church, but like most mothers she wants the best for her children. To Doreen, that means Tara is not good enough for Wynton, and that she will stop at nothing until she kicks Tara as far as she can -- out of Wynton’s life.

Jasmine Benton – daughter of real estate tycoon, Karl Benton – knows what it’s like to be ‘listed’ in “Mother’s Black Book”. Her past connection with Wynton created bad blood between Doreen and Jasmine’s mother, which ultimately led to Jasmine being ‘deployed’ to a different city for twelve years. But something tragic occurs that brings Jasmine back to face her past. How will she fare under the ‘new’ rules of the game?

Then finally, Marcia Gippings – the blind beauty, who met Doreen’s other son, Brian, on a dating website. Marcia is determined to make her heart’s desires a reality. Brian Lakatos – the man of her dreams – is a dashing gentleman, but when it comes to choosing a wife, Brian is extremely selective. Marcia is blind. Will he choose her, or not?

Four women – each desperately want something, but how far will they go before they realize that life is never exactly the way that one imagines?

With the exception of my irritation at the cliffhanger, I enjoyed this book. Its light reading about the woes of young adults of two families. Jasmine returns to her hometown after a 12 year exile in New York where she was sent at age 16 after a scandal involving a Pastor's son. The suspicious death of her mother is the only thing that could bring her back to face her now adult lover, a father who does not appear concerned about her mother death and memories of past friendships. There are several stories within this novel, each intriguing and drama-filled. The story has romance, murder, love on the side and people of faith all mingled together. Certainly not boring. The writing is a little stilted at times but the story is good although marred by minor editing problems. Then there is the mid-scene cliffhanger so beware this is not a stand alone book. To the authors credit in the FINAL pages she shares that this is her style. With that admission, I will read the next one to wrap up the story but then that's it for me.

Mother's Black Book (Church Gurlz 1)

Brothers Brian and Wynton are Preachers kids. While Brian is following in his dad's, Pastor Paul, footsteps to preach the word, his brother, Wynton, only has eyes for the ladies and loves secular music. Jasmine was once involved with Wynton in their teens and has now arrived back in Brandon, FL to attend her Mother Sharon's funeral. Unknowingly, Jasmine finds out her Mom was poisoned to death and that her dad, Karl, is having an affair with his BF's wife, Doreen. Lots of stuff going on in Book 1.

I have had this lil treasure for a long time. I don't know the how or why it came up on my radar but I'm so glad it did. A quick and jaw dropping quicky had me screaming quietly in the wee hours of the morning. I paused everything to read this book and it looks like I am about to pause everything again to read the conclusion. Can I say for the record that Doreen and Karl were the spawns of Satan! This is a new to me author.

Mother's Black Book

Church folks. Everybody in the church does not have the church in them and the lives of these folks are truly evident. All have sinned and fallen short of God's glory.

push on

I like it so far. Very interesting story between Doreen and Tara. Eager to see what will happen next between the two especially the ending of Doreen and her nasty personality. Can’t wait. Pushing on to part two.

Twists and turns

Wow so many different themes. Finally when the plots started developing, going for a ride. Unexpected outcomes. This is going to be two more books of intrigue.

What I liked from this series....

"Church Gurtz'1" was indeed a good read however, that cliffhanger? Oh, well I will be picking up the next series because this story line will keep you turning the pages to see what is going to happen next! I will say you will have to pick up the next series to see how this will end. There will be a lots going on in 'Church Gurtz' 1" read so you will have to keep up...like several stories going on at the same time that are so full with intensed drama. Be ready for a read with some of it all...romance, miscarriage, deceit, murder, infidelity to church people faith challenged .... all out there. This is one intriguing read that has been well written by this author that I would recommend to you.

MOTHER’S BLACK BOOK by H.H. FOWLER

“ One should learn to ‘respect’ the variances in human temperaments. There were no two people exactly alike. And, if that was understood, then there was a strong chance that people would get along much better. ”

Doreen and Tara were in an argument. Neither could stand the other. Wynton was Doreen’s baby and she was not letting Tara get her paws into him. Tara was a successful hairdresser that had fallen for the ever so fabulous Wynton. Wynton was a successful performer, that had a major addiction to sex.

My favorite part of the story is when Doreen and Tara are at it again, and Doreen dropped the little black book. All the secrets to Doreen’s life.

“You did this, you foul-looking creature! ”

What grabbed me most is how evil Doreen was to everyone she came in contact with. I don't understand how someone can be that miserable all the time.

Jasmine seemed liked a well rounded young lady. After what she was put through, she has a good spirit. Brian, is just like a puppy in heat around Jasmine. Karl and Paul held it together very well so far. I do not know whether they will be able to in the upcoming book. I am sure praying for Marcia to get her sight back. She appears to be a lovely woman.

Mother’s Black Book was a really cool story and the cliffhanger happened at the perfect time. I give it 4 stars. I enjoyed it very much, can’t wait for book 2. In the Presence of my Enemy. It’s going to be awesome.

This is a novel with a cliffhanger. Does it get any better than that?

The author’s writing was marvelous. I couldn’t wait to get to the next page. It surely kept my attention. There wasn’t any sex or violence in the book.

The author took a while to get the readers into the story; however when he broke the ice, he brought it full swing. Blasting the readers with suspense about Jasmine and her lover that she longed for years ago, along with her mother's death which seems to rock the boat at home with her father. Doreen's black book has little secrets inside of it that lands in the hands of the one person she is attacking; who turns out to be her son's future wife. This book is action packed and I enjoyed it; really pissed about the cliffhanger but maybe I will try using this in my books. Great job H.H. Fowler!

Oh my word I don't know when the last time I read a book in a day. HH Fowler did an amazing job of grabbing the reader's attention and keep the reading actively involved with the story up until the end! However, not very happy with the end. A cliffhanger. I was reading about what Tara found and the info she feel upon and then turned the page. Like oh Crap there was no next page it was the end of the book. Besides that, I am totally excited to get the second and third book!

At first this book was a very slow read for me. I'd read a few pages get bored with it and put it down. The middle of the book is where it really got good. I plan on reading the next 2 books in the series.

This is my first time reading this author and I found her work enjoyable. The language of this book is different which leads me to believe the author is of island descent. I will read part 2 because the characters keep you intrigued....especially Doreen and Tara!

After reading just about half the book I became annoyed with it. I didn't understand why it took the author so long to get to the juicy part of the book. However, overall it was a good read and I'll eventually read book number 2.

It was a good read but....

It was definitely created to be a sequel... So if your looking for something good and quick- this is not the book for you. If you can wait it out til round two, then it's a good read!

Interesting . The book was kind all over the place . I found I had to re-read a chapter because of the different characters but I enjoyed it overall.

It took to long to get to the point only to find out I have to read part two to find out what happens.

Not what I expected.....

Although this book was not what I expected, it was a wonderful read. The writer captured me with longing, suspense, and drama. All the elements that I crave in a book. Now let me go and read Part 2..........
