I still need to do some thinking about this book, and that's a good thing. At first I thought it was slow to develop, but now that I'm done I believe that Ms. Tobler was just being very thorough laying out her characters and scenes. In truth, the book is very well-paced. I was so engrossed by the last hundred pages that I was shocked when I got to the end (only e-books can do this - there isn't the physical cue of all the pages being in your left hand to warn you that you're about to get cliff-h ...more

Eleanor Folley is the daughter of an archaeologist who is working on her father’s ‘Niknackatarium’ at the Exposition Universalle in Paris in 1889 when her dark past catches up with her. She is approached by Agent Virgil Mallory, a member of a secretive organisation with suspicious motives known as Mistral who are interested in her past association with Christian Hubert, a roguish archaeologist more in the mould of Indiana Jones than her academic father, and also in a set of rings known as the Ri ...more

Mystery! Adventure! Steampunk! Romance! What's not to like?

I'll admit that it took me a little while to get going with the story. Tobler is very thorough and beginnings of any sort are tough, but she puts forth well-rounded characters of all sorts. But, once the introductions are done, so to speak, it's off to the races for a fun adventure with complex themes and threads.

I felt like all of the individuals in the story were real. Too often, I read stories (or watch shows) with 2 or 3 leads and th

I simply adore the idea of Steampunk – there really is not enough good novels in this genre and to find one as engrossing as Rings of Anubis, is a real triumph.

The whole story built up nicely. The pace was great and the scene setting just enough to tease your imagination, but not so much as to interrupt the action or bore your socks off. The protagonists were engaging and I found Eleanor the right mix of qualities for a female lead – something quite rare in urban fantasy and paranormal romance b

Given the Victorian obsession with Egyptology, I am kind of stunned that I actually cannot think of another steampunk novel dealing with it. This one does it beautifully.

The timeline alternates between 1889 and earlier relevant events; this is the kind of thing that I usually have trouble following in ebooks, but Gold & Glass is paced smoothly enough that it's not an issue. The description and tone are rich in detail without bogging down expository lumps; the characters are really well-developed
Given the suggested rating criteria of 3 stars for "liked it" and 4 stars for "really liked it", I'd rate this one 3 1/2 stars, if half stars were allowed. While I enjoyed the book (and I'll read the next one in order to see the story concluded), I felt like the book dragged in places and new information was too slow to arrive -- it seemed like we were just given the smallest teases of information about Eleanor's quest and the mysteries of her past, to the point where I became frustrated and uns ...more

Take one determined archaeologist heroine, one tortured werewolf secret agent hero, toss into both Victorian era Paris and ancient Egypt, add mystery, intrigue, faith, addiction, mythology, adventure and romance, and it's one tasty treat for the reader looking for a different sort of story.

Virgil and Eleanor both have their own demons to battle before they can open themselves to the other, and having to solve the centuries old disappearance of Eleanor's mother, with some help from the Egyptian
