When I first started Prince Charming by S. Celi, I got the impression this was a modern day twist on Cinderella. Very modern. Our Cinderella was a guy, Geoff. An 18yr old senior with two wicked step brothers, an indifferent, maybe harsh step father, and a loving doting mother trying to make everyone happy. But this story was so much more than Cinderella. This was a real coming of age book. Hmmm...maybe I should say a coming of man, because in the span of 6 mos. we get to watch Geoff go from nerdy, straight A, low man on the totem pole student, to a bright, handsome, caring, loving, young man on the verge of adulthood.
This was a totally refreshing story told in the male pov. We are with Geoff every step of the way as he muddles through a difficult home life. An even worse social life. All the while being questioned about his plans for the future. Like he should know right then and there what he wanted to do with his life. Well of course he should he was the class salutatorian.
Geoff is incredibly intelligent and he knows all too well how his high school operates. He knows everyone, he knows who's dating who, who is popular, who isn't and he knows exactly where he falls in with his fellow seniors. It's pretty low. But he accepts it. I won't say he embraces it though. As the year progresses he becomes more and more disgruntled. I thought this was where Geoff begins his period of growth. We see him change, adapt, rebel. Sort of like watching a butterfly emerge.
All along the way are trials and tribulations that many high school seniors face everyday. But to add to all this turmoil, Geoff is smitten with a popular girl. A girl deemed the princess of high school. A girl dating the quarterback, Laine. Laine is untouchable as far as Geoff and his group of friends are concerned. However, Laine one day befriends Geoff and from there a relationship of sorts blossoms.
I did question one thing. Geoff's father dies when he's 3 and all throughout the book there is mention of his father and his memories of him. Like he remembers how his mom was before his father's death. Obviously that wouldn't be true. There were a few times when I was confused about who was talking and some conversations seemed a little stilted but nothing that would keep me from reading or recommending.
All in all I did enjoy Prince Charming and I would look for other S. Celi books in the future.
