Bullseye!
Sometimes you can read many books and be rewarded with a little bit of insight or learning, however, all 60 pages of this little gem of a book really hit the sweet spot! I am from East Durham in England and I had no idea how ignorant I was of the perfectly recorded, religious and holy origins and history of my own county and city of Durham. I had no idea that Durham was founded entirely by monks in the 10th century and that it was entirely because of the final resting place of saint Cut ...more

Within the scope set out for this book, it is worth 3 stars. Language makes it accessible to a middle school reader. Author favors the kind of Christianity still practiced at Durham, and any history seems filtered through that lens. There is more about 7th century St. Cuthbert and then 15th century operations at Durham than about anything between. It is a nice, plain introduction to medieval monastic life in only 60 pages.

I read this as a follow up to a day spent at Durham Cathedral learning about life there and the way of St Benedict. Filled in some of the details of how things actually happened rather than the ideal of the rule. An easy read originally designed as a Secondary School textbook but revised and reillustrated to be sold in the Cathedral.
