BLOODFEUD!

In the evil time after civilization fell apart, the Undying High Lord Milo Morai gathered together as many children as he could save and set about teaching them the laws of survival. Over the centuries, Milo's children wandered the Sea of grass, fighting and prospering and adding to their numbers until they became the mighty force known as the Horseclans. With time, some of their laws changed or were forgotten but there remained one that must never be broken - "Kindred must not fight Kindred!"

Yet now, clans Linsee and Skaht were on the brink of a bloodfeud that could spread like prairie fire throughout the Horseclans. Could even Milo smother the sparks of hatred before they blazed up to destroy all of the Horseclans?

Franklin Robert Adams (August 31, 1933 - January 4, 1990) was an American science fiction and fantasy writer, formerly a career soldier. He is best known for his "Horseclans" books. He wrote as Robert Adams, an abbreviated form of his full name.

Adams was an early pioneer of the post-holocaust novel. His Horseclans novels are precursors to many of today's attempts at this type of story, many of which do not exhibit his painstakingly detailed world view or extraordinary plot follow-through (many of his Horseclans books are so interlinked that they make sense only when read in order; he did not create many "stand alone" books in the series).

Hallmarks of Adams' style include a focus on violent, non-stop action, meticulous detail in matters historical and military, strong description, and digressions expounding on various subjects from a conservative and libertarian viewpoint.

Set before the migration to the east coast, clans Linsee and Skaht are on the verge of starting a bloodfued and getting themselves thrown out of Horseclans membership. Milo tells them the story of when the clans Lindsay and Scott were accepted into the Horseclans and the surrounding events.

Within that story he also tells of the time right after the nuclear cataclysm when he gathered a group of teens from LA/Ehlai and taught them to survive, first trying to farm and later as nomads.

He also tells the story of when he first took a "death wound" during WWII, and found out that it did not kill him.

One of the people that helps transition the group to nomads is an elderly, highly talented leader/doctor/fighter/scientist named Bookerman who turns out to be undying, but leaves because of incompatible philosophies with Milo.

This episode deals with the days after civilisation was torn apart and Milo is trying to round up survivors.
But clans Linsee and Skaht are feuding and this threatens the Horseclans so Milo takes action to diffuse the quarrels.
We also get to meet Arabella another telepath to whom Milo disclosed the turbulent history of the clans for her to see how hey and whether she wishes to join them.

An awesome and amazing book. Sometimes the time-jumps can be a little hard to keep track of, but this is an excellent work.

Stories within stories...

So far: it's before the conquest of the Karaleenos (don't ask if I've spelled these right, probably NOT) and the Ehleenee. The Horseclans are still on the plains; before Milo went walkabout for a couple hundred years. To quell hostilities between two of the clans he's telling a story of about 200 years after the Great Dying, but within that story he keeps bleeping back to just 2 generations after the Apocalypse (don't know why, quite yet).

Miss the prairiecats in the past-time stories; his anachronistic "speak" dialogue for the Canadians is hard to comprehend sometimes.

The Horseclans series is probably the best blend of fantasy and SiFi I have ever read. Pretty much something for everyone in these books. Great characters, epic storyline, fantastic writings. My highest recommendation
