This book of Sally Swain's artwork of famous artist's wives is cute and humorous. It is a parody on famous works by these artist so it is best "read", if that is the correct word as it only has photographs of her work, by people with some knowledge of art. The publisher chose a glossy black paper for this book, which while it shows off Swain's artwork brillantly, much of the white printed text had worn off and was unreadable. I missed not being able to read Sally Swain's bio in the front.
I flipped through this on a 15 minute reading break while wandering the stacks of Amherst College's library - I had to actively stifle my giggles, lest I be booted from The Silent floor, what a riot! Swain paints acutely smart reinterpretations of classic male artists, with a quiet and witty, though certainly not subtly, feminist insight. What was Mrs. Monet doing while her husband painted? It's worth a flip through on your study break to find out!
