Short excerpts from various books were not enough to get me interested in reading further.

Won this as a First-Reads sampler.

Book (sample) by Book (sample) analysis

Selection 1: _Beautiful Disaster_ by Jamie McGuire. I can see where this book might appeal to some. For me, it's not a selection I'd buy, primarily because I couldn't relate to the main character, Abby, right off due to the vast difference between her age and experiences and mine. She's a 18 year old college frosh in the first months of school, falling for the the champion of her college's version of Fight Club. It's well enough written (at least the bit I got to sample) that I'd probably read it if I found a copy at my library & didn't have anything else pressing to read. But it wouldn't be a book that I'd spend money on for myself.

Selection 2: _Love Unscripted_ by Tina Reber. This one, I actually could see myself buying as a paperback to read. Taryn is the mid-20's-ish owner of a small pub in a seaside Rhode Island town that's over-run by celebrity & groupies with the filming of a movie in the town. Taryn's not interested in the heart-throb actor who drops into their midst, until he literally stumbles into her pub, looking to escape a hoarde of groupies & paparazzi. And THAT's where the sample ends. It caught my attention well enough that I'm considering buying this one.

Selection 3: _Naked_ by Raine Miller. I'd first seen a blurb for this book months ago, and it's been on my radar ever since. Was thrilled to get to read this little sample. Will most likely buy a copy soon to read, it drew me in that quickly. Brynne is a college-girl/part-time model who catches the eye of a rich Londoner when he buys a nude painting of her at the art showing of a best friend of Brynne's.

Selection 4: _One Tiny Lie_ by K. A. Tucker. Similar to selection 1 in that it's a college frosh on her first day at school, at a toga party, catching the eye of the hottest guy in the room, who promptly accosts her & kisses her almost senseless (though given that she was already pretty drunk, she was already half senseless).... He's the guy she should be avoiding, he's the guy she winds up craving. Situation & premise don't appeal to me. This is one I probably wouldn't even look at twice. Certainly won't be buying a copy.

Selection 5: _The Sea of Tranquility_ by Katja Millay. This one threw me. I actually looked for a copy at the library today because it caught my attention enough that I want to read more, but I can't say that I "liked" it, truly. Not sure what to think of the premise. I'll look for it at the library, perhaps even put in a request for the library to buy it for the collection. Don't think it's a book I'd buy for myself, but it appears that it's a good YA teen angst novel that I'd give a a read.

Selection 6: _Slammed_ by Colleen Hoover. Another 18 year old protagonist who falls for a college-level peer. This one looks a bit different, though, as the teen & her mom & bro move to a new town after the passing of her father. We don't find out much about the situation in the sample, except the details of the move, and the passing of her father. No hint of the "shocking discovery" hinted at in the blurb. Not sure if it'll be a romance like selections 1 and 4, or if it'll be a bit more angsty & self-discovery type YA like selection 5. I'd be willing to give this one a read, as well, if I can find it at the library, but again is not one that I'd probably buy for myself.

All in all, 5 of the 6 selections are books that I'd read if given another chance, though only a couple of them would I be willing to (plan to) spend money on myself.

Disclaimer: I won this book from the Goodreads Giveaways program; sign up with Goodreads, find their Giveaways program (at the down arrow next to the Explore link) for your chance to win cool books!

Have you ever browsed through a bookstore, found an interesting looking book, read a page or two, bought the book, then found that either: a) you happened to pick what apparently were the most brilliant two pages of the book and that the rest left you cold, or b) the rest of the book was as good as, if not better than, the two pages you read and that you now have to buy every book by this author? C'mon, if you're anything like me, you know that both scenarios have happened to you at least once. And while certain edited compilations have been interesting, while leaving out long blocks of texts, they're not quite what you're looking for.

Atria Books: A Booklovers Sampler, by Jamie McGuire is a wonderful way to read more than that page or two of several books without overwhelming the reader. The premise is that the reader gets a decent section of the book, ranging from four pages of one chapter (Colleen Hoover's Slammed) to a fourteen page segment of two chapters (The Sea of Tranquility, by Katja Millay). (The other book segments in this sampler were fro Jamie McGuire's Beautiful Disaster, Love Unscripted, by Tina Reber, Naked, by Raine Miller, and One Tiny Lie, by K.A. Tucker.)

Each segment was enough to really get a feel for the book that it came from without overwhelming, leaving the reader either wanting more, while knowing that yes, it would be worth the price, or thankful that it wasn't a longer segment. However, the samples were chosen in such a way that each segment prompted me to want to buy the entire book that the segment came from.

Both Atria Books and Jamie McGuire have a hit with Atria Books: A Booklovers Sampler. I look forward to reading other samplers from Atria Books, as well as the entire books that subsequent segments are from.

“Atria Books: A Booklovers Sampler” is just that – a sample of 6 current / upcoming books from Atria Books. A reader is not going to be satisfied with these snippets, but that IS kind of the point … if you enjoy what you've read, each has an entire book that you can pick up to continue your reading!

I don't think it's possible to determine if you're going to like a book by reading 10 to 15 pages of it. However, I do think that it is highly likely that you'll be able to determine if you WON'T like it, so this is an effective way to get an exposure to several books at once.

I'll give it 4 stars. It accomplishes what it set out to do. It cannot qualify for my interpretation of 5 stars; nothing in any of these 6 excerpts stuck with me to the point where it distracted me from my next read. In fact, none of the 6 grabbed me to the point where I had to go out and get the entire book to keep reading – although Tina Reber's “Love Unscripted” and “The Sea of Tranquility” by Katja Millay both came close. (The character studies of K.A. Tucker's “One Tiny Lie” caught my eye, but the “romance” - “lust” is more accurate – did not.)

DISCLOSURE: I was given this book as part of the Goodreads FirstReads program. A review was requested, but was not a requirement of the gift.

This is really just a collection of teasers. Many of the titles are not the kind of books I search out. Well written, yes, but not what I would particularly choose. Those of you who long for a good love story, have at it.
That said, the final piece of the collection is from a book called 'Slammed' and it is written by Colleen Hoover. This piece in particular makes me want to give the real novel a chance. It is about loss and being broken inside ... hoping it evolves into the overcoming of the feelings of loss and being broken.
This was something of a fun read ... Gotta be open-minded and broaden those horizons. Or at least, so I am told. :P

After reading this sampler, I plan to pick up Sea of Tranquility by Katja Millay and Slammed by Colleen Hoover. I thought the sample chapters from these two books were intriguing and definitely wanted to read more.

This sampler is a compilation of a chapter from each book listed. I couldn't tell if I would like the other books because the chapters were too short and they didn't immediately hook me like the chapters from the above two books.

Thanks Atria Books and Goodreads for the opportunity to read this sampler through the First Reads program!

I received this book for free through a Goodreads First Reads giveaway.
This book was good for what it was...a sampler of 6 books. Each was about 10 pages or so. I enjoyed 4 out of the 6 excerpts:
Love Unscripted by Tina Reber, One Tiny Lie by K.A. Tucker, The Sea of Tranquility by Katja Millay and Slammed by Colleen Hoover. The other 2 stories had the theme of the dominating, bad boy which I'm just not in to.
This book was worth reading since it gave me some new books to look into reading that I had not known about before! It was a very quick read.

I can't wait to read this! There's only two that I haven't read so far, and the ones that I have read were amazing!

UPDATE*****
Although I've already read all but one of these books, I still liked it! It really is just a compilation of teasers from each of these authors, but these are some of the best books in NA.

This was a good sample of several upcoming authors. I enjoyed "Naked" by Raine Miller and now have to read the book. It was my favorite in this sampler. I also need to get a copy of "Beautiful Disaster" by Jamie McGuire but after "Naked". The sampler was nice but I often find the stories do not develop enough in the first chapter which is all they gave me. Oh well, based on only one chapter I do recommend "Naked" and "Beautiful Disaster" as interesting, well written novels.

This book contains six samplers from some of Atria's authors. Each snippet is just enough to get you hooked making you want to go right out and pick up the book! One of my favorites had to be "The Sea of Tranquility" by Katja Millay, because it's a story of first loves.Overall, a great way to find new authors that I hadn't heard of, but after reading this book will certainly be looking for their work!

I received this book for free from a Goodreads First Read giveaway. While it was nice to get to sample a chapter of a few different books in this book sampler, some where too short to peak my interest. My favorite one out of the 6 books sampled was Naked by Raine Miller. It was the only one that made me want to read more and I will be adding it to my want to read list.

Love small samples of books. This was perfect because if I couldn't get into a book in the first couple chapters then I wouldn't want to spend my money on it and this helped me find a few with which I would like to read fully. received the book for free through Goodreads First Reads.

I received this book sampler from a Goodreads contest. It was a great sampler of contemporary fiction. I have already read a few of the books introduced in the sampler, but was pleasantly surprised by the books, I had not yet. I will be adding the rest to my ever growing TBR pile.
