Tessa has finally made peace with her life as a Variant. She and long-time love Alec are officially a couple, and for the first time, she has everything she wants.

But the air is tense at FEA headquarters. An agent has disappeared, and rogue variant organization Abel’s Army is likely the culprit.

When Tessa is summoned for her second mission, she is unexpectedly launched into a massive conspiracy. Her best friend Holly is kidnapped and Tessa knows it was meant to be her. But who is after her? And more importantly, why?

When the FEA’s efforts to rescue Holly don’t yield any results, Tessa takes matters into her own hands. Desperate to save her friend and uncover the mystery behind Abel’s Army, Tessa launches her own investigation—but nothing could prepare her for what she finds. Everyone in her life is harboring secrets: Alec, her estranged mother, even the father she never knew.

The truth will take her out on the road and out of her comfort zone, with danger lurking everywhere. Summoning all of her courage and strength, Tessa must decide who can be trusted and what is worth fighting for—even if it means going against the life she thought she wanted. Her final decision will leave readers breathless.

This was an okay story, but I did get a little bored in places. I also thought that there wasn’t enough resolution at the end.

Defector is the second book in Tessa's story (and hopefully there will be a next one). This time around there is not big murder mystery for Tessa to solve, instead things take a very different turn.

Tessa is happy with her life after her first mission is over. She is back at FEA headquarters, she and Alec are finally together and she is back with her best friend Holly. But during her second mission Holly gets kidnapped and Tessa knows that they took the wrong person, because they were after her. Everyone believes that the organization behind the attack is Abel's Army, and their leader wants Tessa. But after Tessa finds out the secrets that the people closer to her were keeping from her she decides to take matters in her own hands and leaves FEA to go looking for Holly.

This was a crazy journey. There was no huge mystery to solve this time, but I was really happy to follow Tessa in her mission to save her BFF. I was also really glad with the one helping her along this journey. This is the new couple I am shipping. But as always my one and true love in this series is Tessa. She is an amazing MC. She is struggling with what to follow, her heart or her mind and I am glad that she is usually picking her mind and that the times she follows her heart she realizes that she can't keep doing so.

Finally, I have to say a few words about that ending! OMG! What the F happened. I was on board with Tessa until that very last chapter. Why girl? Why? Still, I am glad she thought it through, even though I don't agree with her decision. I can't wait to see what turn things will take in the next book.

This was actually better than the first book. And the ending omfg! I'm so glad I read this. Thanks to the people who convinced me! You guys rock!

Oh shit. Tessa and Alec are together. SMH. Let me NEVER READ this book. I hate Alec so much.

Edited 4/28

Okay, first of all. I'm going to give this book a chance, if I ever read a good review about this. Second, Alec will be mentioned a lot in this book. His character annoys me. It bugs me every time he says something. You can check my review of Impostor and the comments for the reasons. Lastly, there's a lot of good books with characters that doesn't annoy me. I would rather read them.

A quick, easy read. There was a little more relationship drama than I wanted, but the love triangle wasn't as bad as I thought. I did like that we got to see more Devon, though. I thought the intrigue surrounding the truth about FEA and Abel's Army was good, but I am not at all satisfied with the conclusion. I did like the ending, but it's definitely a middle of a trilogy ending and not a series ending and apparently the author has decided not to finish the series. According to a post on her Facebook, she's over YA and writing Adult Romance under a different name...Very disappointing.

i know if i read this now, my intestines will run away, via asshole of course. or maybe the cringe would be enough for them to shoot up through my mouth. but the more i think about this, the more i think about seventh grade me and how happy i was reading something my friend enjoyed. and i dont know ugh like i miss it. i miss being stupid and watching cartoons and not being addicted to my phone and reading just because my friends would read and hating library class beacuse of the english teacher and then finding this book and actually finding it entertaining. like ugh i know its mediocre and more about the misunderstood hot white dude than the murder mystery BUT I MISS ME FROM FIVE YEARS AGO. ugh i hate growning up how tf am i almost done with school???

I thoroughly enjoyed Impostor, but Defector was explosive. It follows the story of Tessa, abandoned by her mother to the FEA, she's called the compound home for the past two years and has been in love with Alec almost as long. When Tessa seems to finally find her happy ever after, her world is blow apart after a mission gone terribly wrong. If her best friend being abducted by the supposed enemy isn't enough, it seems her life within the FEA has been based on secrets and lies. In Defector we see Tessa break away from the only stable home she's ever known and she's now on the run. She's feisty, fiery and readers will find themselves in for an incredible ride with the girl who's finally had enough. Tessa's character was brilliant, she wasn't the lovestruck and argumentative girl from Impostor, she's now a young woman who is making her own choices and she'll be damned if anyone tells her otherwise, even Alec. We see Devon return, the brother of her first assignment and I admit, that I prefer him as a love interest for Tessa. Alec reminds me of Aiden, from Jennifer L. Armentrout's Covenant series, but without the moody brooding. But given the choice between he and Devon, Devon wins, by a mile.

The storyline is really engaging and I found myself immersed within the first few chapters. Defector is a worthy thriller, that leaves behind the teen angst of Impostor. I absolutely loved it. It leaves readers with a cliffhanger that I certainly didn't see coming and are now eagerly awaiting book three in the series which I expect will blow me completely away.

I actually swore aloud when I finished this book - and believe me, that does not happen often. I love how most of the characters are deepened out more in this second installment in the series, making it easier for the reader to identify with them. Since we are still seeing things from Tessa's point of view, she is easiest to relate to; but you also get to know more about Alec, Devon, and even Major. New characters are introduced and no-one can be trusted.

The tension is built up very well and remains throughout the book, which constantly made me want to keep reading. There was never a boring moment. My only complaint would be that this book (that also goes for the first book, by the way) could have been longer in order to explain more things and work some parts out even better; sometimes it felt a little rushed. Overall, however, I was kept on my toes the entire time and I can't wait for the next book to come out.

I was not expecting that in the end. I'm okay with it, but I just wanted her to be with Devon. I wanted that since the first book and I thought that it will happen in this one, but NO:( , it didn't!

Okay, WHAT JUST HAPPENED?!

I can't believe this. I need to process this. I am in so much shock right now!
I literally just paced around my room. I CANNOT EVEN.

I'll brb.

- - -

Okay! I'm back now. I just had to get a bag and breathe into it for 10 minutes.

Okay, not really but I am just so darn ecstatic right now! I love, love, love Impostor. It was amazing. The plot was amazing. The characters were amazing. The mystery was just AMAZING. The cliff hanger about a "enemy group" at the end was AMAZING. But Defector. THIS exploded. No, I exploded. Seriously, I have never paced around my room before after reading a book. But I just did it. This was THAT good. Throughout the whole book I was just a mess! Not emotionally, of course, but the suspense! Man, I'm telling you the suspense was just killing me. Everything kept becoming twisted. Every page seemed to be a shocker. It was just insanely awesome!

Definition of defector: In politics, a defector is a person who gives up allegiance to one state in exchange for allegiance to another, in a way which is considered illegitimate by the first state. More broadly, it involves abandoning a person, cause or doctrine to which one is bound by some tie, as of allegiance or duty.

I keep thinking about this story, and I'm freaking out and I have to keep reminding myself that this isn't real.

Spoilers ahead!

1. DEVONNNNN: First off, may I just say, I KNEW IT! I was genuinely sad that Tessa was going out with Alec. It just didn't feel right, no matter how adorable the concept of Alec being her "strong dude in shining armor" is. That was just. No. Blegh. But the few "cute scenes" and special moments shared between Tessa (even in Madison form) and Devon in Impostor gave me hope! (Yay!) For example, when they sat together and watched that movie. Also, the end of the funeral when they touched briefly and Tessa felt that "shock." I was SO hoping for some chemistry between them two, that she would ditch silly Alec, and fall in love with Devon! YAY! And that basically happened... sorta kinda maybe hopefully yes. Seriously though, what I really like is their relationship. He is respectful of her. They got to know each other in this journey. He protected her, numerous times. And he even healed her "A" scar. I mean, AWWW! :)

2. Tessa can take care of herself: Folks, she does not need Alec. She doesn't need Devon. She can take care of herself and we really, really get to understand that in this book. Tessa's life is pretty much shattered; there are two sides fighting for her loyalty, and she feels the FEA betrayed her in a way. But then again, is Abel's Army really good for her? I personally don't think so. We KNOW now that it wasn't! -.- UGH Zach!

3. Alec: Okay then. Sigh. Alec was on my nerves already, but he just crossed the limit after this. When we realize that he has a dual variation it was just... really Alec? Really? Wow. Tessa trusted you SO much, but you didn't even trust her that much? Sigh.

4. The ENDING: I don't know about you, but I was in SO much shock, my goodness! Deep down, I knew that she could have been wiped of her memories because apparently they had someone who could do that. But her own brother... Her decision to join Abel's Army was wrong. She should have gone to the FEA, even if it meant Major and life control and whatnot. But then again, the FEA didn't TAKE HER MEMORIES, completely transform her to a clueless individual.

I guess I was just really shocked because I realize now that if he really took these memories away, she doesn't know who DEVON IS. I mean, this is just heartbreaking. Heartbreaking, I tell you. She doesn't know Alec anymore either. She doesn't know about her successful mission. She doesn't remember how Devon almost died (or how she thought he was almost gone), she doesn't remember Madison and Yates, and Ryan, and the creepy fog. She probably doesn't remember anything except a sweet, loving family. But... that is just all a lie. It wasn't a sweet, loving family and I am just so mad at stupid Zach right now because he made it sound like they really loved her and just UGH! He's probably lying about Devon too. He didn't change his mind, DEVON WOULDN'T DO THAT. And Kate and Tanner came to rescue her! I wish she would've listened to them! :(

I'm sad now.

And I'm sad because I have to wait for the next book. Aw, man.

Alec and Tessa's new budding relationship is the first thing that is pushed onto us. We already know how much they care for each other from the first book and knew they were going to get together from the end of that one, but we finally get to see what their relationship consists of when they are locked in a facility and potentially being hunted by other variants. What it also shows, more subtly, is that while she may have got what she wanted, and was able to get together with the first person who properly showed her care a love, that doesn't mean that all the insecurities that she constantly worries about have disappeared.
She still holds the worries that she isn't good enough, that she doesn't deserve love, which affects her ability to retain normalcy in her relationship with Alec, even through his constant reassurance.

It is then that we learn that agents are still disappearing. We have known that there is another organisation out there for people with variations, Abel's army and that they are either kidnapping people, or the people are willingly leaving their posts to join that other organisation. No matter which is the real reason, it doesn't help Major in any of his decisions, or the ability to stop the agents from being on the other side.

Speaking of Major, he is a character that is very hypocritical. He gets annoyed at Abel's army for allowing kids to kill other people, and yet he puts kids in dangerous situations all the time. Although their methods are different, and they think much differently from the other, their overall lack of care for life, and only caring about the talents of the people that they 'possess' is one thing that they share in common, and one thing that makes them the same genre of person.

I was glad that instead of showing that Kate had some kind of meltdown when Alec broke up with her and moved on with Tessa. She wasn't someone who was out for vengeance and she also wasn't someone who was very hurt from the whole thing. She was a strong woman, and even before when we knew both Holly and Tessa disliked her, it always seemed like she wasn't overly meant to them, and that they only disliked her because they were jealous. Not only was she more experienced, but she was also an expert when it came to her emotions, and seemed like a much better fit inside the organisation than either of the other two. Her power isn't the greatest, so I am sure that she felt some jealousy towards the other two as well, but that doesn't make her a bad person. In fact, she is one of the most morally righteous people, not only in the organisation but also in the whole book.

In this book, Tessa finally started to realise just how much some people babied her. Not Holly, or Kate, but Major, somewhat, and mainly Alec. They, especially Alec, only wanted to keep her the same, but the whole organisation and business they were in didn't allow anyone to be safe. Alec's care is nice, but can't lie and say that seeing Tessa brush it off as if it was nothing wasn't satisfying.

Learning more about Alec's power made me realise just how hard it would be to even be friends with someone like him. You'd be constantly worrying, even if you trusted him completely, about what could potentially happen if he one day decides to do something. If something drastically changes you'd always be questioning him first. If I was Tessa I am not sure that I'd be able to deal with that constant anxiety. It would be too much.

As we learn more about the two different entities, the FEA and Abel's army things start to make sense. Criticisms that I had of the first book are further explained by new information that fits in and perfectly gives reasoning as to why that was the case. People that I thought weren't fitting to be given titles that they owned were brought into question and I think that this added a lot to this book. It makes it seem more real, and because a lot of questions that I had about the first book were answered in this one.

By the time the ending of the book started coming up I and I checked if there was a third, I was annoyed to see that there wasn't and that there probably isn't even going to be a final book in this series. There were a lot of questions left unanswered, and a lot of things that I was still questioning.

For example, we can see that Alec cares for her very much, even if what he has been doing isn't worthy of her trust, it doesn't diminish her feelings. Also, what about Kate? She was one of the most interesting characters to me, and also the one I could see joining Tessa on whatever she does, with them becoming good friends. Her story was left off in the middle of everything. Learning more about Major, and why he is so insistent on everything being done the way that he wants it to be done would've been a great part of this continuation. We know the bare minimum about him, and, of course, learning more about what makes him tick only makes him a more interesting character.

There was also a new character, Penny, who we probably would have learned more about, as she would've had a lot of information having worked in a bar for varients for so long. There also would have been Devon who, although he isn't new, is someone who has much less experience in these situations when compared to every other agent that has been introduced previously. We could have also seen where their budding relationship would lead, as their change from friends to more than friends was much more natural than her and Alec. She even showed hints that she liked him in the first book as well, which further shows how their relationship would've been healthier than her and Alec.

And finally, moving on to the ending. Spoilers ahead, so skip this part if you aren't interested in knowing what happens in the final moments of this incomplete trilogy.

Okay, so in the final parts of this book, Tessa meets with her brother, learns about his power, which is memory manipulation, and then get, basically get an information dump of sorts. We learn about almost everything that we didn't know before, including how Zach and Abel had been looking for her the whole time. They had apparently even tried to find her when they didn't know that she had a variation, which is something that she always assumed was the case, and they only started to come after her once it was revealed that she had powers. The timelines matched up, but there was only her conjecture based on the things she had been told. Nothing from the actual source up until this moment when she is talking to both Zach and Abel.

The most annoying part of this book and the one that doesn't allow it to get a higher rating is the way it ended. There was so much room for extra things but we will probably never be able to explore that, and instead are left with Tessa getting some of the painful memories edited by Zach. I thought that this was very weird, as although they are obviously painful, we didn't get to see how it explicitly affects her. Of course, as the reader, we can tell, judging by how she acts, that she is deeply affected by her past, but it doesn't ever seem that she latches onto this. Another thing about this moment is that what I would've hoped to see from a second book is the exploration that although you can alter memories and make them less painful, it isn't always the right thing to do. You lose something within yourself, something that makes, you, 'you' and I think this would've been explored more thoroughly if there was the next instalment of this series.

Overall, would I recommend this series? It depends. I did like it, but I wasn't deeply affected by the knowledge that this series isn't going to get another final book. There was more to be explored and talked about, and although I do care, the fact it isn't doesn't change too much for me. I would recommend this series if you don't care that it doesn't have an ending.
Don't come in expecting the world because all you're going to receive is a chunk.

From the moment I finished reading Imposter, I have been eager to find out what trouble Tessa gets herself into next. Upon beginning Defector, we see that Tessa once again finds herself thrown into and investigation with Holly and Alec as company, however things quickly start to fall apart, and Holly is taken by Abel's Army.
Determined to find Holly, Tessa questions other members of FEA, and hearing some answers she didn't expected decides to investigate further, and uncovers some secrets and lies about the FEA, Alec, Kate, and her family.

I did feel sorry for Tessa, more so than I usually would. Everything that she thought was her life now, is a lie. Things that she thought were true for the past few years were just a cover up, to keep the truth hidden from her, even the relationships she thought she had with others weren't real, just another facade that was put into place. Yes she made some rash decisions about what she wanted to do next, but I genuinely do believe that they were for the best, even though they do lead to a whole lot of trouble along the way.

Defector is just as gripping as Imposter was, and although there isn't much investigation work going on as part of the FEA, Tessa does have her own motives for the work she does. Devon is her partner of choice, and it took me a while to remember who he actually was, but the more time they spent together the more the pieces fell into place and I had my answers. Defector takes this duo on a journey that isn't exactly easy or safe but definitely lets us see their abilities in action.

A lot of information was uncovered throughout Defector, and some of it I did not see coming, I was just as shocked as Tessa was, but like her, I also needed to find out the real details and not what was written on a piece of paper.

After finishing Defector I hope that what Tessa thinks is right for her, is the right answer, that she hasn't made her situation worse for herself. I hope that the answers she craved, and the truth she sought after, will all be revealed.....and I really hope we get another book to find out these answers ourselves.

Defector picked up right where Impostor left off. And, Impostor's ending did leave me super anxious for Defector, so I was excited to jump right back in to the Variants world. Where Impostor focused more on the story, Defector continued with plot importance, but also held its characters and relationships high up too. I loved Tessa more in this book, as well. She felt more mature this time around, and that has to do with her development which has been brilliant thus far. I love that she's her own person and not the typical "woe is me" type of person. She's kick-a** and rocks!

WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK.

Susanne Winnacker is an excellent writer. She conveys the characters' emotions well, provides anticipation and makes you want to read more. Although this book wrapped up nicely, I hope she'll write another book or two to tell readers what happened with certain characters. I know there's still more conflict between the FEA and Abel's Army too.

Hmm… Probably 3.5. I really liked this book up to the point where it started to annoy me :( I was irritated by quite a bit as the story progressed--especially in the latter third or so of the book. So much so that I started paging ahead, which I HATE doing, and which only bugged me more and led to my dragging my feet about finishing the book :( SO sad--especially since I actually really liked the first book in the series and I thought this one was VERY promising at the beginning :(

One major thing that irritated me was the romance. Even though I was pretty wary of him in the last book, I hate to admit that I actually felt kind of sorry for Alec in this one ! And, though I do LOVE Devon, there are problems with him, too :( Even though Tessa was attracted to him in the last book, he thought she was his sister, so I doubt he was feeling very romantic toward her then and :( BUT, it's probably all a moot point now anyway, since ! How sad and pathetic!! All I can hope is that :( The ending just INFURIATED me--stupid cliffhangers!!

Another thing I HATED was that Tessa wasn't smarter after and that she hardly ever used her Variation afterwards--how dumb was that?!! She could have at least used it to or something clever!! Just bugged me that she wouldn't have used her brain more and I really loved the use of her ability in the first book--it was SO cool! I missed it in this one—especially in the latter part of the book :( Beyond stupid that she didn't think to use it more! So many missed opportunities :(

And I have to say that I am SO SICK of reading books about !! I have read SO MANY in the last year utilizing this plot device and it isn't one I like much anyway--it just makes me sick and sad and it infuriates me, especially when :(

But, despite all of my complaints, this was an exciting, largely unpredictable book and the “who can she trust?” aspects really added to the suspense and intensity of the story. I have to say that I TOTALLY called it on my predictions about in my review of Impostor, but a lot of other things were harder to call and really surprised me :) And, WOW, there were some incredibly nail-biting moments in this book which had me on the edge of my seat! And, the ending was CRAZY! I’m anxious to see where the story goes from here. I can only hope that somehow !! A few predictions: . I wish I didn’t have to wait so long to find out if I’m right :(

One last thing: be warned that this book does have a little R-rated language, but no sexual content beyond a little tame making out.

2.5 stars

It started out quite slow, but after the pace quickened, the book was very riveting and action packed. However, the ending was a major cliffhanger, and if there are no more books in the series, I would have to say the ending would be an extremely disappointing conclusion to the series. I'm afraid I doubt there will be another book, since it's already been three years since the release of this one, but who knows? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I would bump up my rating to 3.5 stars if there's another book in the series, but until then, I'm keeping it like this.

This book was amazing, just like the first book, imposter. The plot was great and I’d already fallen in love with the characters from the first book so this revived my love for them. Trust seems to be the main theme of this book and specifically who to trust. This makes the book more thrilling and unpredictable. The only thing that I don’t like is that there is not a third book. The ending to this book needs to be resolved, so I desperately hope that Susanne is writing a third book in this series.

Wonderful Sequel! I love that the character flaws that each person had, were either exaggerated or abolished throughout the book. And the plot twists! Ugh, so unexpected- they're exhilarating. The end has such a cliffhanger though! It's the kind of cliffhanger that feels complete and warm but leaves you begging for more, begging to see more of these characters and these stories! Really hope there could be a Variants #3 but sadly Susanne Winnacker is retiring from the YA world...

It was a 3, but it became a 2 when I realized that that's where the author ended the series.

Very transparent and immature writing in general. And this was obviously not meant to be the final book in the series. It feels similar to a TV show getting unexpectedly cancelled.. Very wrong of the author to end the series halfway and decide to retire from YA books..
