Whitni Balentine felt like she had lost everything. After her parents died in a car accident, she didn’t think things could get any worse, but she was wrong. The dreams were the problem. Whatever she saw when she closed her eyes tended to come true but it was more like nightmares.
Maverick Academy specialized in teaching certain groups with gifts how to function in society without causing problems or going insane. Whit finds herself enrolled and quickly discovers that creatures she thought were just fictional are actually very, very real.
Learning to control her dreams and being the new girl is hard enough, but then she starts drawing the attention of Nolan, the biggest flirt at Maverick. She tries to fight her attraction but he seems to be everywhere. The question that plagues her mind as she gets more involved with Nolan is can she trust him or is she just another conquest.
Between the rumors making the rounds about her and Nolan to her new friend the vampire, life at Maverick Academy is definitely not boring.
I really enjoyed this book and would have given it 4.5 stars if it didn't just end! There is no second book!! This book was released in 2013..... ugh! I hate that.
I must say, this book was like a needle in a haystack, meaning this book isn't known quite yet and I am really glad that I came across it. The book starts off with the main character, Whit, at a normal high school. However White isn't exactly normal; she has dreams that come true. After saving her friend Seth from getting hurt, she decides to tell her aunt about these dreams. Whit lives with her aunt because of a terrible accident that claimed both of her parents' lives. I won't ruin it, but in the middle of the semester, Whit transfers to a boarding school called Maverick that helps people with gifts like Whit. As the plot thickens, you can't help but become enticed and soon you are unable to put the book down. As Whit starts to become able to control these visions, she starts seeing things that worry not only her, but her teachers as well. Then there's Nolan. Nolan is the school player, and Whit believes she's just his next conquest. As Whit and Nolan interact more, you can't help but fall in love with him. He is funny, charismatic, and charming. Whit's friends are equally as enticing. However, the entire book I wanted to punch Darby in the face(if you read the book, you'll agree with me). I liked the book from the very beginning. The way Tate Layman writes this book is mesmerizing. I also enjoyed the way that Maverick is kind of like her own world. It differs from the typical supernatural school books, which is why I read the book in one night(literally). The one thing I wish was different, was that Seth made another appearance. I don't know why I became so attached to him during the beginning of the book, but I did. I can only hope that Tate Layman decides to bring him back in the second book somehow. Which by the way, is coming out winter 2014!!!! Can't wait! I hope my review helped anyone who is reading it. Anything said in this review is strictly opinionated and I am sorry if any of you don't agree with what is said here.
OMG! LOVED IT! Can't wait for the next book in the series... I just hope it comes out quickly. B-) Please, don't make us wait too many months for it! Happy readings!
First off THERE IS NO BOOK 2. Layman's site says book two is coming, but I couldn't find anything to indicate if the coming soon is from 2013 when this book was written or sometime more recently. Spoilers ahead:

You have been warned, there are SPOILERS
This book reads like a first draft. A good first draft, but a first draft. There are numerous continuity errors: Whit's hair length jumps around from shoulder length to chin length; a character is called both Eli and Anthony WITHIN THE SAME PARAGRAPH; the big event is the next day until the next page when its sometime later in the week; only a few people have mental abilities and they are all in the same class until they aren't in the same class and there are way more of them; not only are there suddenly more people with this ability, but they go from only having one aspect to oh with time you will be able to develop them all! (I think Tayman was trying to go for a Shadow Falls (excellent series if you haven't read it) kind of thing where Whit would continue to surprise everyone with new and immensely strong powers but forgot that only Whit was supposed to develop this way and extended that to everyone). Also, if the room for the games is no secret why do they keep walking Whitney through there on tours: Here is this super secret room that students aren't allowed to see or know about, but hey let's cut through here on the way from the cafeteria to the gym.
And lets talk about Whitni. Whit is SUPER whiney about Nolan and she is crazy insecure, and not in an endearing way. You can see the points where Layman waffles back and forth about what kind of character Whit is going to be totally insured or totally kick ass but finding herself after a tragedy, unfortunately, as written Whit is more of the former. Again, there isn't continuity to her character. Whit also comes off as that annoying girl in high school who makes everything dramatic, ie "Oh my god he was talking to another girl, CLEARLY he was cheating on me and I can never trust him again." Yes Nolan is a flirt, but Whit knew this going in and honestly nothing he did deserve the reaction she gave, and even if he did, you decided to date him after he was repeatedly jumping back and forth between being all over you and all over various other girls, like in the same 30 second time span (no an exaggeration). What did you think you were getting Whit? Layman really confuses the concept of being afraid to commit so remaining overly flirty and kissing girls with just straight up being a man whore douche bag (man whore is Layman's word for Nolan). Honestly I'd never want to date Nolan because he is written like a man whore in the beginning without any time or journey to get him through to the side of being a nice guy who flirts and kisses a lot of girls but doesn't date because he doesn't want to get hurt versus a guy who jumps from conquest to conquest. That said, I sided with Nolan everytime Whit freaks out on him. If you want them to have this intense attraction you can't also have Whit acting like the worst of teenagers.
There are also a number of places where the author just dumps information in an attempt to move the story along, but without the needed sophistication to avoid those sections coming off as: Scene author wants to focus on --> I don't know how to move the story so they did some stuff that I'll vaguely reference --> next scene I wanted to move to.
You also don't see enough conflict with the mean girl character to really cement her as the villain of the first book, and there isn't a distraction villain. There are numerous references to those who will end up being the big bad guy, and Nolan is sort of set up as the other possible bad guy, but it just doesn't work. You also don't get a love triangle, so if you are looking for that, move on. Layman sort of sets one into motion with Mark, but never follows through on it.
A good editor would be able to fix these problems and this would be an excellent book. If book 2 ever comes out I'll read it because the genesis of the story is there and I want to know who the big bad are and how they are finding and attacking the school, I'll just do so knowing that I have to ignore the majority of what is written and just pull the big details out so as not to get so frustrated I want to toss my Kindle or abandon the story all together.
The first couple of chapters of this book made me put it down and walk away for over a month. I hated to tone of the book, I thought the writing sounded amateur and stilted. I'm not sure what changed, or whether I was just in a weird mood when I first started this book, but eventually I picked it back up and truly enjoyed it. I actually thought it was a really really good story. I was invested in the characters. I was rooting for the love interest. I loved all the friends and side characters. It was fun. And the competition in the middle, was a great way to add some action and adventure. I think more could've been done with it, but it still caught my attention. I will continue to read this series!
It was an okay read, if you ignore the grammar issues and typos. The MC drove me crazy with her immense insecurities and I just wanted to punch the romantic interest in the face. The secondary characters were the saving grace of the story. AND... If this is a series, where is the next book?!
I loved the book, but where is the continuation? I need more, I hate it when I'm left with a cliffhanger with no ending in sight! If another book would come out I would recommend this to all my friends.
