This was a fairly entertaining novella, but it felt sadly underdeveloped for the most part. Our hero is David Hawke, an overworked London banker who travels to Brighton for what I imagine is a week’s holiday every year – and yet has his own house in the town. But this visit is going to be a less than pleasant one, as he has to give one of his friends an eviction notice unless he can pay off his debts within the next month.

David hates having to do the dirty and keeps putting it off – but his frie

Miss Watson’s First Scandal is a short, light and fun read. It seems Miss Watson’s dear brother Peter has run the family into debt. As a result their good friend and banker David Hawke must evict them from their house. Miss Watson sets out to find an heiress for her brother to marry and save them from ruin. What Miss Watson finds instead is passion for herself.

This is a pretty short novella, about 99 pages. It was an eas

David Hawke has a serious problem: he has to foreclose on the house of his next door neighbor and friend. What should have been a much-deserved and relaxing week at his Brighton home has turned into something far more serious and far, far from relaxing. David Hawke has another problem: apparently while he was away working in London for the last year, Abigail Watson, the sister of the soon-to-be-fo

Travelling to Brighton David Hawke a partner in a bank, is long overdue a holiday. But this trip is not all pleasure. His friend and neighbour is in serious debt to the bank, so much so he is about to lose everything. But before David has a chance to meet Peter Watson and discuss his debts, he meets Peter's sister Abigail, she is no longer the young girl David remembers but a very confident and outspoken young woman. When she meddles in David's plans to speak to her brothe

This novella, the first in a series, is a short, fun, sweet read that introduces characters that have residences on the same street in seaside Brighton. The book does a good job of creating characters and dilemmas that will feature in future stories. In this story Miss Watson is a combination of brash and demure and in trying to solve a problem for her brother she causes more problems not only for herself but also for her intended hero David, her brother and her best friend. Although some of the ...more

A delightful story with some surprises. Some people live in Bath year round but others (like David who grew up there) come from London for a vacation. Abigail and her brother who lived next door to him couldn't wait for his yearly visit. She secretly was in live with him. ...more

This is a historical novella, set in a Regency-esque time period, but in the resort town of Brighton so there aren’t any balls or country house parties, just some swimming and friendly dinners. This book is the first in a series, and as such it introduces a core group of characters who live in Brighton and will have adventures in further books.

David Hawke is a rich bachelor banker. He visits Brighton once a year and hangs out with his friends and the menfolk all swim naked in the surf every mor

I have been a fan of Heather Boyd's work since the first Wild Randall's series book that I read. So when I found out she had another series coming out, I could not wait to read it. Miss Watson's First Scandal is the first book in the Miss Mayhem novella series. Once again Ms. Boyd has written a wonderful historical romance, with fun characters that each has their own charming distinctive personality.

I just adored Abigail Watson. She is mischievous but also very caring and protective. Abigail set
Seriously? What kind of a sister Abigail was? Her brother, Peter, was angry and miserable and instead of comforting him and/or making sure he was alright, she had sex with the person who made Peter angry and miserable. It was like she fornicated with the enemy. What a traitor. Granted that whatever was Peter feeling was his own doing, she should at least have some familial loyalty.

David wanted to avoid scandal and protect Abigail's reputation but they were kissing in front of a window on a brigh

For some reason I found this one the quickest read of them and the funniest as well. Perhaps it was because our hero, David Hawke, was supposed to be all reserved and goody two shoes and the last thing he expected was to be seduced by one of his best friend’s now fully grown sister. All he wanted when he got to the town of Brighton was to get some bad business out of the way and then enjoy some well deserved free time. However our heroine Abigail Watson had plans of her own, albeit I don’t think ...more

There were a few aspects of this novella that (for me) did not feel the time period. These characters supposedly live in close proximity to each other, and yet no one noticed Abigail coming in, or going out of David's house unchaperoned? Granted, the reader knows that nothing happened between them (most of the time), but I have seen characters in the same time period forced into marriage over less.

However - even with the fast pace of the story and the suddenness in which these characters find t

A great page turner! This novella sets the Miss Mayhem Series off to a great start. I was grinning and reading as fast as I could to find out what would happen to Abigail's home and how she would deal with David Hawke.

I received a copy of this novella in exchange for an honest review.

Very enjoyable story and fast pace. I have read her work before so it's not surprising. It's free and I read so many books in this era. So this was cute I think book two will be the one to cure my craving. D. From New York City

Great romance set on the sea not in London. Loved the characters & the love story. The heroine is a innocent minx & she falls for a Mr Darcy like character with bit of naughty side. For those that like contemporary romances. ...a must quick read
