Casebook in Abnormal Psychology

This casebook accompanies "Abnormal Psychology, 6/e", by Bootzin, Acocella and Alloy. By presenting case studies from actual practitioners, it illustrates how psychologists diagnose and treat various psychological disorders. Written in an accessible style, it aims to maintain a solid balance between scientific vigour and readability, and it presents a diverse selection of interesting and vivid cases from a variety of theoretical viewpoints. Seven new cases have been added, making a total of 18, and each case is organized into five presenting complaints, personal history, conceptualization and treatment, prognosis, and discussion.

I found this at a used book store for around 75 cents. I think this was meant to used by students studying psychology and mental disorders. I picked up this book out of pure curiosity and I really enjoyed reading it. It was easy to read and follow even though I have never studied psychology formally and had a large range of case studies that were all equally interesting. I also like the format of the book and how there is dialogue to break up the monotony of information being given.

This book was not intended to be amusing, but it was anyway. Attention, wanna be therapists-it might not be such a good idea to laugh at case studies of patients, at least not to their faces. My favorite case study was "Terry"(fictional or real? one never knows) who had such a phobia of visiting the dentist, that he wrenches the examining hand away from his mouth several times, which I pictured as a a struggle, punctuated by grunts and sweaty brows, that was destined to end badly. I believe there was a lot of sweet talking involved to get the dentist to see him again, and, as one can imagine, a lot of theraputic intervention involved too.

The other case studies were pretty humdrum and basic, which makes sense since this was required reading for my Abnormal Psych 101 undergraduate class.

I'm a community college psyc major. Found this book at a yard sale for $.50! If I'm not mistaken it is a college book. It is a good interesting book for anyone looking into studying up on various disorders & the approach to treating the disorders. I basically just skimmed thru this book 'cause I found it had all the info I have already learned thru college.
