Realized I'd missed this one when I found Stella's Starlight; not quite as heartwarming but the illustrations are sweet. Two-year-old Sophie only overcomes her grumpy attitude when Granny finds the perfect costume for her to wear. Adorable! ...more

Sophie throws tantrums to anyone who will listen the day she turns two. Grandma takes her out and buys her a tiger costume. Let's teach rewarding negative behaviors.
A classic displaying the stubbornness, pickiness, and spunkiness of two year olds and, of course, in typical Rosemary Wells' fashion the Grandma who saves the day with her unconditional love and creativity! ...more

Summary from book: On her second birthday, Sophie gets up on the wrong side of the crib and behaves terribly until her grandmother has an inspiration.

Ok; nice if you want to read to your two year old when in the midst of the terrible twos; Sophie is tired of the same colors and activities and toys - wants something different. Grumpy until her grandmother suggests a fun and different costume for her birthday.
This is a book all about getting up on the wrong side of the bed and going through the first of the year of "terrible twos." There is little substance to this story beyond a little girl being grumpy and her family providing her gifts in hopes that she'd snap out of it. I don't know that it is the best moral to provide for kids, but it is a sweet Rosemary Wells book nonetheless. ...more

All caregivers know the terror of the "terrible two"s!"

Ms. Wells has done a remarkable job of showing just how terrible being two can be. And yet, Granny is able to make the day all better for Sophie.

I will have to try a costume change when my next little one decides being a terrible two.

I love the illustrations of Rosemary Wells. They are so charming and delightful and she allows her young friends to be kids. Sophie is in the throes of the terrible twos, but Grandma might just be the one to save the day.

Another good one for birthday kids. More than a few words per page but still should hold their attention. Rosemary Wells is always wonderful.

Sophie's terrible twos are pretty mild compared to my child's. I'll have to try a saber-toothed tiger suit next time she gets up on the wrong side of the crib. ...more

Sophie doesn't seem that terrible - she just turns 2 on this birthday - will she behave even more badly before her next birthday?

an example of a rude and grumpy kid who gets rewarded for it. not the kind of example I want my kids to see.
