Some stories are deceptively simple at first glance, or when looking at the blurb, or when reading them without paying attention. 'Sheik Down' is one such story, and for about the first half, there was nothing to tell me otherwise. Except – there is this one hint that mentions Sheik Raid's unavailable heart. However, that does not do the unfolding drama any justice whatsoever. Talk about complicated dynamics! These two characters are both equally stubborn, ready to fight for what they believe is right, and the result is a psychological battle that I enjoyed a lot.

Lucas is a carpenter who has been working for Sheik Raid for several years. They have built a comfortable working relationship, but Lucas wants it to become more. He is extremely attracted to the sheik, but has no idea whether the feelings are mutual. When it turns out he has a chance for more he jumps at it – until he realizes how one-sided it would be. He is supposed to open up, be submissive and vulnerable, but Raid is going to hold back and remain aloof. That may be some people's idea of a Dom, but Lucas is not a believer. And Lucas, though he likes physical submission, is much too determined to let that one go…

Raid, at first, seems to be the standard macho Dom who needs to tell the sub what to do. He is strict, determined not to give an inch, and unwilling to give anything other than physical pleasure. It is his way or no way. As we get to know him better, and as more details of his past emerge, that impression changes. What emerges is a far more complicated set of needs than those of dominance and submission. The emotional aspects of a relationship are what really challenge him, and it will take far more than the occasional scene in his dungeon to solve the conundrum he sees himself confronted with.

On the surface, this story is about dominance and submission, and the reluctance of Lucas to submit. But the deeper struggle for an emotional connection, one that is not one-sided as Raid has decreed it needs to be, is what really fascinated me. If you like stories with a few twists, if you enjoy psychological power struggles that go way beyond the physical and what may be visible at the surface, and if you're looking for a read that will draw you in and keep your attention, then you will probably like this short story. But be warned: its hidden depths could be a danger to your peace of mind.

I found this shorty to be quite enjoyable. Yes, there were a few things a bit farfetched, but...it was nice and easy, sometimes hot and steamy, and even a bit funny here and there.

I really liked Lucas the carpenter. He was strong, funny and didn't hesitate to show his lack of understanding as to actually submitting to Raid. He saw past the walls Raid put up and didn't give up once he knew what he wanted from Raid.

Raid, the lonely Sheik. I had a little trouble with the name, as it kept reminding me of the bug killer. Lucas has done renovations and other construction jobs for Raid for a number of years. Though Raid tries to keep Lucas at a distance emotionally (for reasons explained), he and Lucas have lusted after each other for almost as long, so Raid eventually comes up with a plan to have Lucas build him a playroom/dungeon where he can dominate Lucas. Raid has a little trouble convincing him that he is submissive and that all Raid wants is to have a relationship in the playroom.

They butt heads a few times before they actually agree on who will give in to what, but that was half the fun of this story.

This is a different type of BDSM novel. Sheik Raid has been lusting for Lucas ever since the man started working for him. Now he’s determined to have the sexy carpenter. He hires him to create a special room for him. One that he’ll be able use to have the man at his mercy.

The problem? Lucas may not be the submissive that Raid thinks he is. And Raid may not be everything Lucas thought he was either.

The two of them force a little give and take. Neither of them denies their attraction, but they’re not willing to submit to the other’s whims.

Raid wants Lucas to submit to him in the bedroom, but beyond that he claims he’s not interested in anything else. Lucas swears there’s going to be more to their relationship and he’s not willing to let Raid get away with what the prince insists their relationship is going to be.

Really enjoyed reading this one. Hot and short but with just enough feels to make it special.

Four stars because the chemistry was palpable and the dynamics of the relationship interesting.

I give this one a 3.5. These are both strong and determined men. They also seem to bring out the best and worst in each other. This story seemed like a battle of wills that just might lead to love someday.

I gotta say, when I was reading this? I sort of fazed out for a bit, lost my focus and instead focused on the implications.

Okay, so let me get this straight: an MM story set with a main character who is a Royal Sheik = Arab. There is BDSM: okay.

My brain fast forwarded to the current laws in wherever this Sheik may come from should they get caught and all I could come up with was this: execution.

What’s not to love? (Ok, ok, the sheik is named, Raid. Ugh, bug spray. Just think: Raheed, yup, that works.) A very wealthy, sexy young sheik has the bondage-hots for the equally sexy carpenter/construction jock hired to work on his mansion.

Thing is, they’ve had a business relationship for seven years and haven’t acted on their attraction till now. Raid hires Lucas to build a very special playroom in the mansion basement. Let’s say it’s made to order. Why now? Why seven years? Those questions (and many others) take a back seat when these two start playing games.

I like the turn this took when it became clear that there are two doms in the room. And Lucas turns the tables on Raid when he wants more than just tie-em-up-tie-em-down play. There’s some grown-up discussion about love and commitment and we get a little look at what gives Raid his bent. I think this is what made this stand apart for me.

But, it’s fifty pages short and while things don’t seem to happen too fast (remember, seven years of buildup), I sure wouldn’t mind more exploration of the working-it-out phase. Also, I wonder what happens when Lucas wants to meet Raid’s family someday? Awkward.

Raid decides to make a move on his terms. He hires Lucas to make his playroom's equipment with the intention of playing with Lucas in a controlled setting and no risk to himself. However, the mutual attraction between them means much more to Lucas and he wants more. Lucas loves Raid and intends to get him in all ways. Through persistence and proving that he will not leave, Lucas succeeds and Raid admits his love for Lucas.

While I have some doubt on the credibility of character of Raid and Lucas as Dom and sub, the story is emotionally intense.

Wow. Rough man sex. What's not to like? BDSM, differing points of view and a serious shake down. I thought this was great.

This very hot short story of a sheik and his carpenter leaves the pages flaming as they turn. A perfect mix of D/S and romance makes this a compelling quick read.
