Hope Lawrence seems to have everything that a young woman could want. The beloved daughter of wealthy parents, her childhood was spent on the idyllic shores of Massachusetts's East Coast. And now she is about to marry Jack Cabot, her handsome sweetheart. But life is rarely as simple or as carefree as it seems. The day of Hope's wedding will be remembered by everyone in Manchester-by-the-Sea, but not in the way that it should have been. When Father Whitney steps forward to address the glittering congregation, his words could hardly be more unexpected and shocking. For Hope's body has been discovered in her bedroom - she has hung herself. In the following days, Hope's family struggles to come to terms with her suicide. But Frances Pratt, Hope's cousin and childhood friend, is less than convinced that Hope took her own life, and begins to probe beneath the surface of her seemingly flawless world...

Dievinu netikėtai atrasti fainas, senas knygas. Šis, draminių detektyvų duetas, buvo vienos jų. Pirmą dalį nusipirkau kažkokioje Kauno mugėje už du eurus, nes tiesiog smalsumo vedina panūdau išmėgint seną, keisto viršelio detektyvą. O "Atgailautojus" nučiupau BOOKSWAP, mat su pirma dalim smagų laiką turėjau. Nesitikėkit čia nieko itin unikalaus, plot twistiško, neregėto ir nematyto. Tai absoliučiai vasariški, melodramatiški, galvas pravalantys, tačiau įdomūs skaitiniai.

Abejose dalyse viskas sukasi apie Frensės šeimą. Jei "Gražiosios pievelės kaimo klube" sprendėme jos pamotės nužudymą, tai čia viskas sukasi apie vestuves, psichologines ligas, traumas ir netikėtą nuotakos mirtį. Kadangi Frensė prokurė ir šiaip smalsi, ji pati imasi tirti kodėl gražioji, turtingoji ir kelią į sėkmingą ateitį nusitiesusi Houp užsinėrė sau kilpą ant kaklo.

Ši dalis man patiko net labiau nei pirmoji!

This was a new author for me and I may read more. It was a well crafted, detailed, but intriguing mystery. Frances’s cousin is marrying but it’s originally called a suicide on the day of marriage. She has to work with Elvis (a cop) to determine if there really was a murder. There are many family secrets, most of them very unpleasant.

I am reading this author for the first time and found the book to be very good. Now I plan to read the other book by the same author called "MISFORTUNE"

Hold your breath - this book is cunning and dark

Be on your guard and trust your instincts, for things are not always what they appear to be. Such was the case in a seemingly idyllic affluent community, the setting for Nancy Geary’s second novel Redemption - a solid whodunit in the ‘old school’ style that will keep you guessing until the end.

When the beautiful, pampered debutante, Hope Lawrence, is found dead the day of her wedding, her visiting cousin Frances Pratt must work with the local police to unravel what is supposedly a clear-cut case of suicide. Little prepares Frances for what she discovers – shameful family secrets, and shrouded goings-on which the community itself is hiding behind its opulent veneer.

As a seasoned mystery fan, who hankers for a good Hercule Poirot or Sherlock Holmes adventure, I admit to being fastidious over the quality of mysteries that I read. Modern-day thrillers in particular, are usually of little interest to me. However, Geary’s suspenseful page-turner is a refreshing exception. While skillfully setting the scene for a most intriguing murder case, Geary weaves the tale so cleverly, it cannot fail to capture the reader almost immediately. The cast of convincing characters, each with a definite skeleton is his/her personal closet, is brought to life with amazing detail yet with an ease that makes them credible.

Everything else aside, Geary’s novel has the added value of being highly readable. It is easy to become enveloped in the plot in just one sitting, pulled along by the delicious suspense and momentum found within its pages. I reached the last chapter of Redemption in few days, complete with accelerating pulse, perspiring hands, and a flurry of speculation. Well done, Geary.

This is a mediocre mystery, although there is a pleasant difference, she doesn’t try to shock with some bizarrely evil sociopath or be edgy with short repetitive sentences. Although the pace is a bit sluggish and the domestic abuse at the heart of the plot, having sex with a child in a closet, seems like a preposterous add on. The protagonist is an attorney, formerly a prosecuting DA, now the CEO of a domestic violence non profit, goes to her cousins wedding in the tony neighborhood of Manchester by the Sea. She satirizes class pretentiousness, greed and hypocrisy of ministers. The cousin dies, is it a suicide or murder? An okay read.

Je n'ai pas été particulièrement emballée par cette histoire : les personnages n'étaient pas intéressants et une bonne partie du scénario était prévisible.

Confusing at first with many character names mentioned. But once into it, the characters unfold better. Good ending.
