Reflections of Mamie is a candid memoir of how a woman reclaimed her life after surviving a childhood of physical and emotional abuse. This is a heart wrenching, but important topic, and I applaud Rosemary "Mamie" Adkins for revealing her story. Others who have suffered from mistreatment as a child will find hope and clarity on these well-written pages. Those who have not experienced child abuse will begin to understand the horrific impact it has on the human spirit. Maime rises above a painful ...more

“Reflections of Mamie: A Story of Survival is an excellent five star memoir that is written in a highly engaging narrative form and I feel so fortunate that I had a chance to read it. It is a brave account of Mamie’s experience of living through horrendous physical and emotional abuse as a child and young adult in the 50s and 60s. It is a story written to open the door of communication and provide an invitation, even a calling, to other victims of abuse to also share their story. Mamie writes ab ...more

Reflections of Mamie is a book you cannot read without being touched. Whether it be the gratitude shown so clearly to many of us in her life or the support of such important charities as DREAM CATCHERS for ABUSED CHILDREN or the moment when she reveals that her mother used to beat her with a coat hanger until the flesh was ripped from her tiny body, Mamie takes

MOTHER IS EVERYTHING

I have read Reflections of Mamie thoroughly through once and in some sections I reflected on the Mamie’s paradox several times.

The author’s paradox is that she never gave up, she never gave up loving her mother. A tearjerking story right to her mother’s only salty tear at the end of her life. Despite all the physical abuse she took at the hands of her narcissistic sick mother, notwithstanding constant chicanery, deceit, sadism, and through wickedness, love for her mother end

Rosemary "Mamie" Adkins

Rosemary Adkins debut travel book, "The Extraordinary Dreams of an Ireland Traveler", widely acclaimed by readers, shows much of who this "extraordinary" woman is and her effects upon colleagues whom she works with as both writer and friend. She has been a successful entrepreneur for many years with several of her own business enterprises; a woman who strives for and attains her goals.

Now as she launches her second book,"Reflections of Mamie", in June

It is said “where there is no vision the people perish.” Rosemary “Mamie” Adkins has rightly said she is a ‘dreamer’ and her dreams and visions reveal how much hope can come from what may seem to be the most hopeless of situations. In her book Reflections of Mamie she details the horror of being raised in a home without love as she speaks of the abuse that she experienced. Sadly, there is no doubt that her story has been seen in other families, and I would recommend this book to those who are se ...more

That a human being can suffer so greatly at the hands of the very people who should be nurturing and loving her, can emerge to not only survive and flourish, but also forgive, is a testament to Mamie Adkins's great spirit. No doubt wakening painful memories in order to come to peace with her feelings, she clearly increases awareness of the scourge of child abuse, Mamie succeeds 100% in making the reader feel her despair and hopelessness as she struggled to gain the affection of her abusive mothe ...more

Shocking and heart-rending.

From the time Mamie was a baby, her mother was inflicted with an insane desire to hurt her. She hurt her in every way possible—with savage physical beatings and blistering, demoralizing verbal attacks. When Mamie finally got the courage to report her, she was not believed. I can understand why. Nobody in their right mind would do what Mamie's mother did to her child.
Her mother was exceptionally adept at knowing Mamie's every move, and was able to thwart each and every

When I started reading REFLECTIONS OF MAMIE (A Story of Survival) I wondered what kind of book it would be. Sad? Depressing? Uplifting? Educational? The truth is that it’s all of these things.

We’ve all heard stories about child abuse, most of which seem to focus on specific horrific incidents. Rosemary (“Mamie”) Adkins’ book does describe the abuse she suffered, however, it also tells the story of the effects of this continuous mistreatment – both physical and emotional – throughout her life. A Triumph for Mamie!

“Reflections of Mamie” is the story of a young girl who spends her entire life searching . . . no, pleading for her mother’s love and approval, but instead receives only physical, mental, and emotional abuse in return. Yes, Mamie’s mother, a woman of high standards, and an even higher opinion of herself, engages her twisted mind and self-justifying ways to make little Mamie’s life a living hell.
However, Mamie is not about to be so easily broken and finds escape in the sereni

“Reflections of Mamie: A Story of Survival”
It has been my overwhelming pleasure to read and experience Reflections of Mamie. What a tragic childhood the author experienced. I felt, the whole time I was reading the first portion, that I wanted to just be there to protect little Mamie. Just to hug her and tell her she is loved. The author paints incredibly detailed scenes that quickly transported me there by her side. This is a book that makes you open your heart and see how wonderful life can ev

Mamie does a great job of detailing the pain that comes from feeling that your Mother doesn't accept you, doesn't love you, doesn't do all the million and one things that a child so needs to feel good about themselves. The home, which is supposed to be a place in which you can safely grow, for Mamie wasn't that at all. It is amazing that through all her struggles she finally realized that who she is and what she becomes is up to her, with or without any support from family. A loving family would ...more

This book is a must read whether from a general interest point of view or from the perspective of an abused personality. Every emotion from despair to hope is aptly expressed in this tell all memoirs and you may even be surprised at the amount of humor Mamie managed to sprinkle between the lines! Mamie talks to her reader, inviting her inside her life to get the inside track into the psyche of an abused child.

A Courageous Autobiography that Should Inspire Us All

Reflections of Mamie, A Story of Survival, is at once a Mommie Dearest book to end all Mommie Dearest books, and a story of a daughter’s indomitable spirit and refusal to be destroyed by the vile, evil monster who gave her birth. Again and again that creature seizes Mamie’s hair, beats, rages, insults, and utters filthy lies about her, and the author never quite succumbs to despair or hatred. I kept thinking, “Surely this time she will have to

Reflections of Mamie is certainly sub-titled appropriately as 'a story of survival'... more than that it is a story of hope, hope within the most adverse of situations. From the age of four to fifty-two, the cries of both child and adult, inward and outward, never lost sight of her love for her mother, even when that mother was the reason for all the turmoil. Hopes and dreams to feel the warmth of arms offering comfort, the brush of a tear proposing forgiveness and the emotion of hearing the wor ...more

Initially, Reflections of Mamie seemed depressing, but as I read on I found that there was far more to her story than that first impression. A true story of parental abuse of a child, both mental and physical, that continued through adulthood was difficult for me to handle. I wished I could reach through the pages and stay her mother’s hand. I wondered at times how Mamie could have allowed it to continue year after year. I was almost angry, wanting Mamie to finally strike out, at least verbally, ...more

This is truly such an incredible and awe-inspiring story of the struggles of one young lady's desire for nothing more than to be loved and accepted by her emotionally and physically abusive mother. Rosemary Adkins does such a wonderful job of going into the history of her life story. Chock full of the horrific details of her mother treated not only her, but her brother and father, what I really find to be the most amazing attribute of this extraordinary woman is her ability to not only forgive h ...more

Rosemary Mamie Adkins story of survival is a must read for those of us who have endured an abusive mother growing up. It shows we are not alone. Rosemary shows amazing strength as she narrates her journey of life, sending us through troughs of tears and sadness from physical and emotional abuse to the reaches of happiness. Mamie never gave up hope for her narcissistic mother.

It is heart-wrenching as Rosemary lays herself bare, exposing the trauma she experienced.

Whew. This book has a lot going on. Initially, I felt like the author was playing fast and loose with the English language, and seems to arbitrarily insert quotations and asides. As the narrative progressed, I started feeling the book as a story told as an intimate reflection by a deeply sensitive soul. She calls the readers "dear friends" and "dear readers," and--far from being a verbal conceit--I really felt like Mamie was inviting the reader into her story.
