APA Citation: (2011). I. Merrian-Webster (Ed.), Webster's American English Dictionary (New ed.). Darien, CT: Federal Street Press.
Reference: Dictionary
Relevance & Relationship: All students need access to a print source dictionary. This dictionary can be used for any class. There are several dictionaries but this is the most up to date and this includes frequently used words unlike other dictionaries. It is also a concise version at only $3.99.
Purpose: The purpose of this dictionary is to be a reference tool for any student needing a quick definition to frequently used words. The dictionary can also be used for spelling checks which many students have difficulty doing correctly.
Validity: Webster's dictionaries have always been reliable resources for reference. This is the newest edition, print copies will probably become obsolete with the addition of online resources.
Format: Print resource can be found electronically. All words are alphabetically listed with definition and pronunciation key. Total pages 407, no text boxes or bulleted list.
Arrangement and Presentation: All words are listed alphabetically for easy access. An index is provided at the end of the book for another point of access. Can be searched online by typing in word to be defined.
Diversity: Many other dictionaries are included in the reference section but this is the most up to date. Some users did not like that it did not include all words, but words included are the most frequently used. All learners across academic and cultural diversities can and should be able to use a dictionary.
