It takes just one week to realize that you’re broken, but not unfixable. ONE week to realize everything doesn’t come with a price. One week to fall in love with love. One week to fall in love with you. Family torn apart at thirteen by a drunk driver. Fifteen foster homes in five years. Determined to keep everything at bay, Nevaeh Rodgers will do whatever it takes to forget.
Until she meets Angel Barajas at a party. He can’t keep his eyes off of her. Saving her from a guy at the party and an overdose, he can’t just let her walk out his door. Determined to help her whether she wants the help or not, he sets out to find her and not a moment too soon. It takes ONE day to realize the relationship you’re in isn’t healthy and leave. TWO days to realize you’re as pathetic as the loser you stayed with. THREE days to get a combination of drugs out of your system. FOUR days to wish life would end so you can take matters into your own hands. FIVE days to be saved. It takes a week to realize that everything each and every one of those days has in common, is the vibrant blue eyes that are staring at me right now.
Dani Morales is a native Texan currently residing in Las Vegas, Nevada with her three boys and her mother. She adopted the boys in December of 2011 and loves spending every minute playing with them. On her spare time you can find a book in her hand or sitting in front of the computer typing out stories that run rampant in her mind.
Holy Shit!! I love, love, love this book! There are so many paths one can take, but what happens when one deviates from current path? Nevaeh was given the gift of life more times than she deserved, or so she thinks. 5 years ago on her birthday, her family died leaving her to the Texas foster system. She had been through 15 homes, 5 of which she was sexually abused at, as well as, told she was worthless and only good for lying on her back. She started believing exactly what she was told. Which is why she found herself living to get high with her loser boyfriend Timo. Well until he walks in their "shack" with another girl. Will he just let her go? When Nevaeh needs her fix she runs to Ice. She doesn't have money though, so her body does the trick. Since her "candy", ecstacy was not lasting for her, he gives her his own thing called "dreams". At a rave, however, she takes too many and blacks out after being protected by Angel. Angel takes her back to his home and takes care of her. Unfortunately for her, he flushed her stash too so she wouldn't O.D. This does not stop her from getting more, but it won't be the last time she is saved or her stash is flushed. She does not want help, but all Angel cares about is her welfare and safety. "You might be right. Everything you said might very well be true, but at least come home with me now. I just want you to at least have a safe place to sleep. And who knows, Nevaeh? I might not be 'Prince Charming' and this might not be a fairytale but maybe, if you just give me a chance, it could lead to something magical," he pleads."
When no longer given the choice, she begins to kick her habit. No drugs, no alcohol. Unfortunately, the withdrawal is not so pretty. Especially when she begins to remember. "Nevaeh you're nothing but a whore, a bitch, you're not good for anything, all you'll ever be is white trash, an easy fuck, a conquest without the challenge."
Through it all though, Angel decides to stay by her side. Even when she tries to push him away, he pushes right back. She starts realizing that when she is with him she doesn't need the drugs or alcohol. Things with him go so much deeper. "Somewhere along the line I started having feelings for this guy. He may make me angry but he also makes me feel safe at the same time."
Will she totally kick her habit? Will Angel be able to help her, or will she destroy him in the process?
Deviation is written from mainly Nevaeh's point of view with like two parts from Angel's point of view. The author, Dani Morales, did a wonderful job portraying the characters, as well as, their action. The withdrawal scene felt so real, I was shaking with her. I could not get enough of this book. 5 stars from Alyssa
When Dani first started sharing bits of Deviation with me I was intrigued and always wanted more. Then she finished and let me read it over to give my input on if there needed more. We hashed that out but I was instantly pulled in and loved it on first read. Dani wrote this in such a way that you FEEL Neveah's despair and even though the book is only in her POV you feel Angel's desire to help her. To me that is good writing. When an author can make you feel the emotions of their characters you don't want to let them go. Now what is Deviation about? Well it starts out with Neveah waking up after a party only to find her boyfriend gone and her motorcycle gone. She walks home and showers and in comes her BF with another girl.... ya she bails. Good Job girl! Sadly Neveah's life has been drugs for quite a while. She uses them not to feel. When she scores some good stuff and heads to a party she see's this guy who she is drawn too. When her BF comes looking for her she is so stoned that she says some stuff that causes hottie guy to step in a defend her, well if she got to see it.... because she she passes out. Where does she wake up? YEP next to MR hottie! What's his name you ask? Angel. Perfect name for this situation I would say. Neveah is so confused on why she is there. But then she finds out Angel got rid of her drugs. Yes She is pissed because she is starting to sober up. You can feel in Angel's reply that he is only trying to help her. Neveah runs out and ya scores more and heads out to get trashed and or tries to kill herself, but Angel like a real angel appears and convinces her to come live with him and get help. She deicides and the back and forth between them is what pulls you in further. You can tell Neveah is attracted to him and Angel to her. Her detox time at his house is one of tears and I am just wow'd at the intense emotion in this book. After Neveah is clean, can these two have a relationship? She has a job and is working on being her. This is what I loved. She wanted to know HERSELF before she latched on to Angel, and he respected that. When an action or words not spoken send her over the edge, can Angel pull her back? I cried here because this part of the book just had me going OMG what will happen next? Then ending had me crying too, because Neveah, deserves happiness. Yes you should know it's happy. But not without tears first. Anything worth having for is work right? This book was so beautifully written that I have read it many times over and told Dani I would even want more and more. Go get your copy today and enjoy Angel and Neveah's journey.
*I received an eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
So where to begin...I must say that I loved the concept of this story from the very beginning, even back when Dani asked me to BETA read it. That's the thing about Dani, she doesn't write easy stories. Her stories are full of both the dark and light parts of life. After reading Entrelacen I knew Dani had a unique way of story-telling and Deviation is the same way.
Deviation is the story of Neveah, a strung-out, struggling woman with no hope nor aspirations for the future...that is until she meets Angel. Angel is by no means your typical man, especially for a New Adult book. He's not a bad boy (at least not anymore) and he's kind, caring, and considerate. I found him to be like a breath of fresh air (cliche, I know). Anyways, he was just an all-around good guy and he tried to/did right by Neveah no matter what. I respected and admired his courage and persistence in his attempt to help Neveah sort out her life. He was just...perfect. I was so excited when I realized that he wasn't an arrogant asshat but a man full of compassion and love.
Neveah...oh, Neveah. There were times I wanted to smack her upside the head but honestly, I think that's a normal reaction. As someone who doesn't have a lot of experience with drug-addiction it was hard for me in the beginning understand her need for drugs. However, as the story progressed I truly began to not only understand her, but to empathize with her. I loved following her story and seeing her transform from someone so full of self-loathing to someone full of love, not only for herself, but for Angel, too. And although Neveah always gives credit to Angel for saving her...she deserves credit, too. She had to let herself be "saved" and thus really saved herself.
Deviation was unlike any book I'd read before. The basis of the story (drug-addiction) was interesting. The entire time I found myself on the edge of my seat hoping and praying that Neveah would pull herself up from rock-bottom. I felt all the things Neveah was going through; her despair, her fear, her inadequacies. I loved that, not those specific feelings per se, but Dani's ability to elicit them through her story telling. It was rather awe-inspiring.
I would recommend Deviation to New Adult lovers looking for a different spin on the all-too-common cookie cutter story-line. This story is full of heart, pain, love, and learning to forgive. It's also the story of Neveah's will to not only survive, but live.
Nevaeh, is living what's left of her broken life. Using drugs to cover the pain of living in numerous foster homes with devastating consequences that no young girl should have to face. Nevaeh is caught up in the viscous cycle of getting high & looking for the next hit before the current high wears off & she has to face life again. Finally feed up with her deadbeat boy friend, Nevaeh leaves their shack to meet with friends at a party. Little does she know she's about to meet her guardian Angel.......
Angel Barajas is the perfect man, no really!! Strong, compassionate, determined, dashing & hilarious. He makes it his mission to save Nevaeh, when he sees her at a party being harassed by a jerk. Angel takes Nevaeh back to his house for her to begin the painful process of detoxing, but discovers this little um...... project, will be more than he bargained for! Yes, Nevaeh his strong willed, sassy & beautiful, she finds herself falling in love with Angel. But can she get her self consciousness under control long enough to realize her guardian Angel is also the love her life??
I had the esteemed honor of reading this book for my sweet friend Dani. I'm very serious when I say, I fell in love with this book!! Nevaeh's life is so gritty & raw to be lifted up into a drug free life was like being scrubbed clean. Nevaeh was terrified because she was so out of her element. Not used to kindness, unless it was attached to sex &/or drugs she was unsure if she could take Angel's actions for what he claimed they were or if he wanted more.
I love that Nevaeh cleans herself up for HER & not because Angel wants her to. She discovered her self worth & realizes she's a beautiful, intelligent person deserving of all the good coming her way. This is truly a feel good grown up Cinderella story (minus the cheesy talking mice & singing).
This book was seriously so crazy, I honestly never knew what to expect! The Author Dani Morales has created a story that takes your through the ups and downs of someone just barely making it through each day. Nevaeh has been dealt a pretty shitty hand in life and although she is alive she is basically a walking dead person because she just cant deal with everything. My heart broke for her so many times throughout the book, some of the things that she went through or did oh my god, I cant even IMAGINE! Enter Angel, he seriously was an Angel in every sense of the word, he has a secret of his own, but he just honestly wanted to help Nevaeh because well, know else was. When I read this book I got so caught up in it that I felt every emotion with the characters, the hurt, loss, pain, happiness everything, I felt it with them. Although Nevaeh and Angel's story is over, I will definitely be keeping my fingers crossed for another book about at least one side character because although its all such a horrible and heartbreaking situation, Dani Morales has created a world that is so real that you want to be a part of it and watch these people be saved from themselves.
Great book by Dani Morales! This book will send you through a roller coaster of emotions right along with the roller coaster lives of the characters. In this book we meet Nevaeh and Angel. Nevaeh has a loser boyfriend, survivors guilt, and a nasty drug habit. When Angel meets her he comes to her rescue and begins to help her conquer her addiction because he has been there and done that before. A romance begins to develop between these two but lo' and behold as typical addicts they are excellent at self-sabotaging their lives and their relationships. This book will having yelling at the characters for their stupidity, similar to the way you yell at characters in horror movies, and rooting them on through the good parts. Dani is awesome and I look forward to reading more from her.

I made this purchase on a whim, new author, new read what could go wrong? Nothing and everything! This story was beautifully heartbreaking, the love and honesty showed through with each new page. The characters pulled at the heartstrings and gave an honest look at real life. Real, honest, dirty life. it's not pretty and we are our own worst enemies but there's always hope. Ms. Morales has written a story that is real and allows for belief in something greater. It is one of the best books I've come across in some time. I wish we had more, I would love to see the characters progress further.
